Name your most hated ESPN analyst

How long ago was that? Greg Norman came within a round of winning the BO just a few weekends ago. What was he 56, 58? Rounds to 60 where I went to school.

I believe he was 52, not far from 48. So football was not athletic back when Blanda competed?

Let me put this to rest. This is the second best player in golf (notice the man boobs?):

That Argentinian guy who won the U.S. Open last year looks like he lives upstairs from a pizza restaurant and next door to a doughnut shop. He won a major last year. The game has changed that much since then?

But he's got great touch and feel and can putt like nobody's business. I'll tell you that damn putting just wears me out everytime.

who generates 122 mph clubhead speed, yet can stand five feet from you on a hardwood floor and flop it over your head (and that's some serious pressure given the outcome for a mistake).

Is anyone arguing fitness here? The combination of length, touch and mental strength is what makes a great golfer? Fitness, it helps over 4 days over the course of a season, but it isn't paramount. Nobody is arguing that it is.

I would argue that the difference is negligible in darts, bowling, billiards etc. The difference in golf is enormous, given that pure size makes no difference like it does in basketball. Athleticism is a big deal in basketball and I think the best athletes in the world are NBA basketball players, but freakish size is also a big difference maker in the NBA and can't really be accounted for in this type of comparison.

The difference in the mens and womens golf games is enormous.

I know there's a huge difference between men's and women's golf, but I wonder if the difference is as big as in some of the more straight-up athletic events. You're right about size being a disqualifier in the basketball comparison, which I didn't think about, but you can come up with other comparisons: e.g., which is bigger, the difference between Lorena Ochoa and the top male players, or between the top female decathlete in the world and the males? Would Ochoa competing with the men be more or less ridiculous than a woman competing in the men's Olympic marathon?

I don't know whether it means anything; just throwing it out there.

but he has great touch, mental strength, hyper athleticism, is in shape. He plays as much as most pros. What gives?

He didn't spend his early life being a spoiled little preppy kid going on trips to the CC with his daddy?

He's too tall?

Really don't see how Jordan not being good at golf supports the argument of golfers being athletes.

And even though Jordan "sucks at golf" I bet he would spank your butt all over a golf course.

For you guys hung up on the visuals. This guy started at QB in the SEC.

I think the comparison is tough, but does make a good point.

In the pure skill and mental strength sides of golf, men and women are even IMO. That would be putting, chipping, dealing with adversity, mental strength.

The enormous difference in the games comes off the tee, spin from the fairway and hitting from the rough. There is just simply no comparison. Even MWie is massively overmatched. Much like the marathoner or sprinter might be.

Ok I'm sorry but if this was family fued and you asked a 100 people what come to mind when you say the word athlete. I bet it would go something like this.

Strong - 50
Fast - 30
Fit - 20
Golf - X
Putting - XX
John Daly - XXX

To be an athlete you don't have to be fit. That's classic BPV, it really is.

He didn't spend his early life being a spoiled little preppy kid going on trips to the CC with his daddy? Neither did many touring pros.

He's too tall? He's not as tall as Phil Blackmar and only slightly taller than Faldo, long time #1, and Mickelson, current #2.

Really don't see how Jordan not being good at golf supports the argument of golfers being athletes. Because he plays tons, is a great athlete, has many of the attributes we're ascribing to great golfing, yet can't play the game. I think there's more to it that raw skill as you are implying.

And even though Jordan "sucks at golf" I bet he would spank your butt all over a golf course.
Jordan would have no prayer playing me at golf. He's awful by decent players' standards.

I said to be a golfer you don't have to be fit.

You telling me that shot putters, discus throwers, QBs and pitchers are paragons of fitness?

what happened to the topic? Mine used to be Holtz, but once you stop listening to what he is saying about football, he is actually pretty entertaining. i do hate Skip Bayless and Steven A. Smith though, also just about every NFL commentator on ESPN

The title "World's Greatest Athlete" typically is given to the gold medal winner of the Decathlon. I can think of several baseball, football, and basketball players who could probably compete in the event, not saying that they would win. I wonder how many golfers could even get through the first leg.

Watch out, your bud gainesvol is going to come in here and tell you that he can beat you in any sport you choose...wait for it....wait for it...

You should pay attention to things so you don't look stupid. BPV was the one who said that he was sure he could beat me in any sport. I just wanted to bring him back to reality.

It's a semantic argument for sure, but those who can generate 120 mph of clubhead speed and have incredible touch and have the mental strength to retain that touch under pressure are the guys you see weekly on tour. There are only 125 spots for them in the world. That's a pretty elite crowd.

You are right. It is a very elite crowd but it is not an exclusively athletic crowd.

ridiculous post.

Driving distance is almost 100% about athletic ability.

Your absurdity regarding women playing is worthless. I'm saying the difference in athleticism between men and women is the reason that there are separate tours. If skill alone dictated everything, then that would not be the case.

Driving distance is about technique. It's not very hard to hit a golf ball a long way if you have good technique and hit the ball in the right place. My comment about women is due to the fact that you always find a way to compare women to men in a disrespectful way.

While it's clear to me that you know nothing of the modern golf game, we'll just leave it at they perform a physical activity that other athletes cannot.

no it's not. It's purely a function of quality of contact and clubhead speed. There are many awful techniques that blister the golf ball. Sean Pfister won 3 world long drive competitions and has a hideous swing. Your comment about women was simply ridiculous. The illustration about women made my point that there is something more than skill and size involved in golf.
