We recruited Jason Witten and this is a direct quote from his timeline: "
Attended Elizabethton, Tenn., High School, where he was a consensus All-America selection at linebacker by PrepStar, Parade, Gridiron Greats, USA Today, Blue Chip Illustrated, and Street and Smith.
As a senior, selected as the USA Today Player of the Year for Tennessee, the East Tennessee Player of the Year, Region Defensive Player of the Year and runner-up for the Mr. Football award after recording 163 tackles, 9.0 sacks, two interceptions, two blocked kicks, five forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries". Yes, he did play TE on offense, but defense was his bread and butter!
Nobody going to out recruit nick, but the rest can be caught and passed in time, then go to work on the turd face little nick.:hi:Big time coaches make big splashes in their first year recruiting without fail. He's got to really turn this class around. I expect even more in 2014, but without some show this recruiting cycle, I think it unlikely he is going to make inroads against Saban, Richt, et al. in 2014.
PS - I really like this guy, but I take the point that we've got to start killing it Top Ten style in recruiting. Flipping Vandy and becoming Cincy South I don't think is enough.
Again let me point you into the direction of
Johnny Manziel - Yahoo! Sports
The first freshman heisman winner. Let the coaches do the scouting not the pay to play websites.
Our Top 30 class filled with 3*s (maybe even the occasional 2*) poached from Cincy tracks with the lowered expectations of another 5-7 season, with the upside being 6-6 and a scrub bowl game.
This is what lowered expectations and downsized goals get you-- a UK mindset and dreams of beating Vandy.
There is always going to be 3 stars who do great but for the most part they dont, and eventually a roster full of 3 stars will come back to kick your ass
Butch better be one hell of a coach, because we certainly will not have an edge on talent.
Bama - 14 4* and 5* recruits
UGA - 14 4* and 5* recruits
Florida - 14 4* and 5* recruits
USC - 13 4* and 5* recruits
Tennessee - 4 4* and 5* recruits
I think some people are concerned, and rightfully so.
No, please continue. Some bandwagon fans need to hear how much of a beast that guy was. Was only a 3 star, but everyone in the area knew he was an elite football player. I dont care how high you can jump or how tall you are if you are too dumb NOT to smoke the cronic, when you KNOW you gonna get tested. If you can run and tackle or run and catch, you are not a total douche, you have a mean streak (on the field) and want to be a VFL, then thats what you build the foundation of your recruiting on. Then you cherry pick.South Pittsburg product. He was awesome and I feared for my teammates (and my life) during practice and I was glad he played for us. Randy Smith (sports anchorman in Chattanooga at time) could not stand him because his boy played for Boydbuchanan (for those non Randy Smith fans). He cut a player so bad with his helmet that Boydbuchanan reported him to TSSAA for having razor blades on his helmet. Oh well, I'll move on from the past.
