New Commit- TE A.J. Branisel

We recruited Jason Witten and this is a direct quote from his timeline: "
• Attended Elizabethton, Tenn., High School, where he was a consensus All-America selection at linebacker by PrepStar, Parade, Gridiron Greats, USA Today, Blue Chip Illustrated, and Street and Smith.
• As a senior, selected as the USA Today Player of the Year for Tennessee, the East Tennessee Player of the Year, Region Defensive Player of the Year and runner-up for the Mr. Football award after recording 163 tackles, 9.0 sacks, two interceptions, two blocked kicks, five forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries". Yes, he did play TE on offense, but defense was his bread and butter!

Wonder who WAS Mr Football that year?? LOL.

Big time coaches make big splashes in their first year recruiting without fail. He's got to really turn this class around. I expect even more in 2014, but without some show this recruiting cycle, I think it unlikely he is going to make inroads against Saban, Richt, et al. in 2014.

PS - I really like this guy, but I take the point that we've got to start killing it Top Ten style in recruiting. Flipping Vandy and becoming Cincy South I don't think is enough.
Nobody going to out recruit nick, but the rest can be caught and passed in time, then go to work on the turd face little nick.:hi:

I guess that kid wasn't a 5 star who went to Mississippi Valley State. What was his name?..............Jerry........Jerry.........Rice!! Jerry Rice, that's it! He turned out to be a "fair" player who wasn't recruited by whoever the f*%k was the defending National Champion at the time.

Look how all those 4 and 5 stars players did that Lane recruited. I'll take a coachable 3 star over a "me me me" player any day. USC hasn't faired too well with all of their studs have they?

so bama, UGA, florida, and usc never sign a 3*? some of you people are pathetic.

Bama - 14 4* and 5* recruits
UGA - 14 4* and 5* recruits
Florida - 14 4* and 5* recruits
USC - 13 4* and 5* recruits

Tennessee - 4 4* and 5* recruits

I think some people are concerned, and rightfully so.

How about a coachable 4 star or 5 star?

More like Tennessee just 4 4* recruits. No Five stars

Our Top 30 class filled with 3*s (maybe even the occasional 2*) poached from Cincy tracks with the lowered expectations of another 5-7 season, with the upside being 6-6 and a scrub bowl game.

This is what lowered expectations and downsized goals get you-- a UK mindset and dreams of beating Vandy.

Butch better be one hell of a coach, because we certainly will not have an edge on talent.

There is always going to be 3 stars who do great but for the most part they dont, and eventually a roster full of 3 stars will come back to kick your ass

The top 10 TE's entering the NFL draft according to CBS include five 2* players, two 4* players, two 3* players, and one who I could not find a rating on from either Scout or Rivals (probably a walk on).

There are positions where rankings matter alot more... though nowhere are they perfect.

However the recruiting sites completely whiffed on TE's that will be high in this year's draft. The two 4* players were from UF and Bama. One was recruited as a dual threat QB. The other was recruited as a DE. So they didn't even evaluate those guys as TE's.

The 3* went to Stanford and ND. The one that went to had offers from UCLA and Cal (comparable to Cincy, Mizzou, and Nebraska)... except those two schools have now fired the coaches that recruited him. The one from ND's other offers were: Cincy, Indiana, Minn, NW, Vandy, WFU, and Purdue.

I am NOT predicting success for this kid. I AM disproving your line of "reasoning". Eight of the 10 best TE's going into this year's draft were NOT considered good TE prospects by the recruiting sites.

PS- Rivera was a 3* also and is projected to go late in the draft.

There is a point to be made generally about 4/5* players... but not when it comes to the TE position.

The roster is good enough now that he can afford to not be desperate. The last 3 classes have been solid and had relatively little attrition. Both Dooley and Kiffin had to take bigger chances with their first classes due to the roster. But Jones has to pull a great class next year if he doesn't sign around 10 4/5* players this year.

FWIW... and not that it is certain to transfer... but the classes that made up Jones' rosters at Cincy avg'd finishing around 5th in the Big East according to Rivals. So it would not be inaccurate to say he has a history of coaching up players beyond what the recruiting sites think of them.

I tthink there is good reason to be concerned but I am not to sure we can do allot about it this year. Let's just hope for a couple more wins this year. Winning = Good Recuiting. If that TE from Ohio is actually 6-4 and can run an actual 4.5 he could play WR or TE.

South Pittsburg product. He was awesome and I feared for my teammates (and my life) during practice and I was glad he played for us. Randy Smith (sports anchorman in Chattanooga at time) could not stand him because his boy played for Boydbuchanan (for those non Randy Smith fans). He cut a player so bad with his helmet that Boydbuchanan reported him to TSSAA for having razor blades on his helmet. Oh well, I'll move on from the past.
No, please continue. Some bandwagon fans need to hear how much of a beast that guy was. Was only a 3 star, but everyone in the area knew he was an elite football player. I dont care how high you can jump or how tall you are if you are too dumb NOT to smoke the cronic, when you KNOW you gonna get tested. If you can run and tackle or run and catch, you are not a total douche, you have a mean streak (on the field) and want to be a VFL, then thats what you build the foundation of your recruiting on. Then you cherry pick.
