Nothing Against Coach Martin...

Pat makes about $1.4M .. would they pay the men's BB coach more than that? were they trying to keep it under $1.4M? or were they trying to keep it under $1.8M (Dooley)?

She's a great coach, but she's overpaid. Her salary needs to reflect more the revenue that sport generates, I think they are barely in the black.

the administration doesn't think in those terms or they would use the revenue criteria in searching out BB and FB coaches. Revenue not part of the equation my friend.

can't rationalize their approach.

BTW, I feel Pat should be top of the charts in womens basketball which she is.

As far as BB and FB coaches, we should pay the position equal to anyone else in the conference and fill the positions with people deserving that salary. If they believe that is CDD and CCM, so be it. but pay top salaries.

-Alabama hires Saban and wins title
-Kentucky hires Calipari and goes to Final Four
-Auburn buys Ca... Nevermind.

Basically, money talks. Tennessee just seems to make it speak very softly. Are we committed to being a top SEC and national program or are we just concerned with the bottom line? Kruger is a proven commodity. So were plenty of other coaches. We didn't get one of them. Oklahoma did. They paid. We did not. Why? Sweet tea, grits and Andy Griffith? Or is it all about the Hamiltons, baby?

I'm amazed that salary was such a driver in the coaching search.

I agree Pat should be well paid, but making more then the men's coach, when you consider the revenue of the two programs doesn't make sense to me.

I don't understand the comparison. If it takes $1.4MM to keep the best women's coach, you pay $1.4MM. If it takes $2.5MM to get a top tier men's coach, you...well, nevermind.

It's ridiculous. As soon as they got politely and immediately rebuffed by Dixon and Wright, which I'm now convinced was just for show anyways, they went straight to the C list. Take Byrd out of the equation and UT targeted the third or fourth best coach in the Valley, the fifth or sixth(being charitable) best coach in the A-10, and roughly the 10th best coach in C-USA.

Wow.

ding ding ding. we have a winner

Getting Lon Kruger makes that big of a difference for you?

It's not getting Kruger specifically, it's that the way this process has gone clearly sends the message that UT has no interest in fielding a top-flight basketball team.

I think CCM will turn out well, but as soon as he hits a streak of some success, and another school offers him $2mil or more, he will be long gone if Hamilton is still AD here.

Hamilton sure is cementing his legacy as a good-for-the-books AD. Both through fund raising and being a complete cheap skate.

For God's sake, this isn't buying a home theater system, it's UT Volunteers athletics.

Ah, less than a week and this place has already found its groove in complaining about the new coach. It's like a well oiled machine here.

That quote was in reference to the rebuilding job Martin did at Missouri State. In three seasons with Martin, Missouri State's winning % was actually lower then the 3 previous seasons. Not trying to slam the guy, its just a fact.

Yeah, but it's pretty disingenuous. Martin was left with nothing by the previous coach, whose record had worsened in his three years. Martin, on the other hand, was left with a crap hand, lost a bungch of games his first year as a result and greatly improved over the three years.

Exactly. The difference between what 2 mil per gets you and Cuonzo Martin is immense.

You can't get caught up in hiring or looking to hire big names. You hire the right guy for the situation and Mike Hamilton diod just that.

We'll see. I just think we took our typical Mickey Mouse bargain basement approach when it comes to coaches. Bama spends money on Saban, Kentucky on Calipari. They are in the game to win, we aren't. Makes no sense to me when we literally spend over a hundred million on facilities.

If it is a philosophy then the thinking is flawed, if there is any real thinking going on. I guess they were just banking on all the koolaid drinkers getting behind whoever they choose and they will because they're gullible to a fault.

Martin may turn out to be a great hire, but you can't like they way they screwed up the whole thing, from Pearl to now the hire. Someone needs firing and i'm not sure Hamilton is the only one.

Martin, Byrd, Gregory and one more who I've not been able to corral name on. but was mid-level coach.

If these and the Tulsa guy were the choices, I'm glad we got Martin. Why we are hiring coaches on a shoestring with the best facilities in college sports is beyond me.

Glad to see Team hatvol, and soon the majority of the board, coming around to sanity. I'd like to see a redo on the, "Do you like the hire?" thread.

Has nothing to do with Martin. It's the shopping at TJ Maxx that's the issue.

Why would you throw $2 million at Kruger when he's a nothing special coach? What coach were we going to get at that money? I'll wait and see about Martin before pissing and moaning about the hire, which is a specialty on this site. I swear, people here are never happy unless they are miserable. I don't know of any coach I really wanted that we could have for $2 million and, if Martin really did impress, then I don't have a real issue with the hire.

Do I like the hire? It's fine thus far, but we'll see. I'm sure as hell not going to run to my Twitter and radio show to dog the guy for days.

What Tennessee did in this search is the equivalent of Penske Racing spending milions and millions on R&D and equipment, then hiring a kid who won a couple of go cart races at Celebration Station to drive their car.

I've gotten used to this. Sad, but true.
