Nothing Against Coach Martin...

But it wasn't as if the Panthers were willing to look the other way or anything like that. Pearl was not guilty of breaking any NCAA rules at Iowa. More than anything, UWM was naive. Some of the people at UWM weren't even aware of the long-past Iowa-Illinois incident. UWM was a small school starting to have a little basketball success with Ryan and was eager to keep it going. There was nothing irregular about the hiring, not over there, believe me. Pearl was eager to take any D-I job and UWM was thrilled to have him. It was pretty much as straight-forward and innocent as that.

So, are we still referencing Grunfeld in this scenario or what? I'm not getting the point of what you're ultimately saying.

Sadly, he doesn't either. Since he left for that extended period of time, he is a shell of his former self. BTW, Eric why were you gone so long again?

Apparently you misunderstood, what does that have to do with anything about anything that was mentioned. By the way, you never answered my question. Do you still think Ernie only knew about Martin from the UT and ISU games on ESPN? Yes or no... you seem to be avoiding it.

I'm sure he encountered him during the years, but the extent to which he knew him is what I would like to know. Were/Are they friends?? There is just something about this whole search that doesn't add up for me.

So you are backing off from your original comment of Ernie only knowing him from two ESPN televised games?

Good grief, it was just an example, since no one on here can really connect the two, as to why he would recommend him.

Literally anyone that watch college basketball during the 90's has heard of martin. Could it be that Ernie was a fan, and followed his career?

What do alot of you guys don't understand? This is the only kind of hire Tennessee can make. We were always a small time basketball school. One Elite 8 is our greatest accomplishment. What big time hot shot coach would want this disaster of a program?? I don't care how much money you offer... Would have looked like fools if we kept throwing money to coaches out of our league and then get turned down one after the other in public.

You try to identify a coach at a small time school that is hungry to prove himself... And hopefully that is what we get with CCM. I like this hire. I like his story. I like the fact that he learned from Gene Keady. Hamilton is a huge failure, but I believe he got this one right. JMO.

Yes, give me an example or some background on how much credit Ernie gets for making this hire.

He doesn't know him. He just watched him on TV vs. ESPN vs. Indiana St. He probably TIVO'd it just so he could see this unknown guy. During the hiring process he invited everyone over to watch the replay of that game to show them how that one game made him a great coach. Ernie obviously has no connections, hasn't made great recommendations to UT in the past, and is an utter buffoon. :birgits_giggle:

Can someone tell me if I'm imagining that Kruger had some kind of scandal?

VIB, You might be thinking of his playoff "guarantee" when he was HC for the Atlanta Hawks...He guaranteed the Hawks would make the playoffs or the team would refund $125 to season ticket holders or something similar to that...And they didn't make the playoffs..That's all I can remember...FWIW, I would prefer Coach Martin over Kruger any day...IMO Kruger would be mediocre at UT, regardless of how many offers from other schools he has had...If you can't take the Illinois High School Player of the Year three years in a row and win something, maybe you ARE an average coach.. But far be it from me to challenge the vast wealth of knowledge/psychic ablity of those on this board with a better knowledge of BB than me...

I guess that's why Arizona offered him their job two years ago and Oklahoma is trying to hire him right now. Great point.

he must have told you this when you got home this evening? i can now only assume you really are his family because i dont see any proof anywhere he was ever offered a job at Arizona . not from Lon and not from Arizona. we can all throw rumors around. so it must be true UT offered Mack the 2mill and i guess and Lovie is somewhere on a plane right now.

no way Oklahoma hires the old man, hes fine in Vegas with Wayne Newton and his country club membership.

Well of course Cheek said it was Hamiltons decision and supported it. What was he supposed to say? Hamilton is gone after the meeting with the infractions committee. They have to have someone go in front of them. Now if they don't get any infractions or very little he may survive it But if they get nailed He's gone. Hope like hell he's gone. But its obvious that fans thoughts don't mean anything.

Lon Krugers record....

21 years coaching college basketball
13 NCAA appearances including 9 in his last 17 years
3 times past the second round (one 22 years ago)
3 of his 4 coaching stops at schools with a FAR better basketball history then UT.

So we missed out on???

No offense, but you could tweet Martin's accomplishments and still have characters left over...unless we need more filler material such as "growing up in a tough area in east st. louis".
