Good Lord.
Some of you need to chill out.
Coach Martin may turn out to be the best basketball coach in Tennessee history.
Paying someone with a big name 3 million a year does NOT mean that coach would be a winner at Tennessee. It doesn't mean the 3 million a year coach is any better or as good a coach as Coach Martin.
True VOL fans are going to support Coach Martin 100%. If he doesn't produce championship caliber teams in a couple of
years, that is the time to bash the man.
He is our coach, everything I have read and heard reported about him has been very impressive. Give him a chance to do his job.
All this bashing before the man and his family Has a chance to unpack. I hope he or his wife is not reading volnation. I'm sure some of the post on here will really make them feel welcome to Knoxville..Some of the things said on here about Coach Martin and Coach Dooley are pathetic.

It's amazing some of our posters think they know more about the process of hiring a basketball coach than Hamilton. It's even more amazing that UT hasn't contracted one of our esteemed posters as a consultant to their basketball program. I will go with the recommendations of Grunfeld and Houston over ANY poster in this forum because either one of them FORGOT more about basketball and coaching than ANY poster in this forum has ever known.
That being said, they knew they were going to hire Cuonzo before they fired Pearl. I love the hire and YES, would rather have him than Krueger.
Do you really believe the first time Grunfeld was asked for his opinion was the Pearl hire? What about the previous coaches that flopped? Peterson, Green, Houston, etc?
Michael Jordan knows more about basketball then any of us too. Doesn't mean he would make a good GM and hire the best coach or sign the best players.
Correct, but many of their athletes are on merit scholarships. Many athletes are recruited to the Ivy League with an offer of a scholarship. It just isn't deemed an athletic scholarship
Absolutely no question that the major reason he scored little against us compared to other teams was the fact that Mears played the slow down game. Actually, those Mears' teams were some very good teams for that time.
Of course they can land Marshall. We could have landed Marshall; we chose Martin instead. I'm not completely convinced that Marshall is obviously better than Martin. Martin swept Marshall this year.
The only financial aid in the Ivy League is need based. No athletics, no academics. Period.
And Marshall swept Martin the year before. Here's some differences:
1. He transformed unknown Winthrop into a program that dominated it's conference, and began to play competitively even in the NCAAs toward the second-half of his tenure there.
2. He has shown the ability to have success in both the regular season and in conference tourney/NIT post-season play.
3. His programs steadily improved at both places.
4. His programs have generally exceeded his predecessors at both locales, often dramatically so.
5. He's been the best recruiter in the conference during his tenure there, as measured by recruiting rankings of his players and the programs he beat out to get his players, while Martin has been one of the weakest.
Lon Krugers record....
21 years coaching college basketball
13 NCAA appearances including 9 in his last 17 years
3 times past the second round (one 22 years ago)
3 of his 4 coaching stops at schools with a FAR better basketball history then UT.
So we missed out on???
But to be fair:And Marshall swept Martin the year before. Here's some differences:
