Nothing Against Coach Martin...

I think Martin could be a solid coach--but I have a feeling that neither he nor his system will have enough sizzle to get really good recruits. The college game is full of name coaches, and not having a name makes it harder to land really good prospects. This will be a problem....

Correct, but many of their athletes are on merit scholarships. Many athletes are recruited to the Ivy League with an offer of a scholarship. It just isn't deemed an athletic scholarship
The only financial aid in the Ivy League is need based. No athletics, no academics. Period.

Good Lord.
Some of you need to chill out.
Coach Martin may turn out to be the best basketball coach in Tennessee history.
Paying someone with a big name 3 million a year does NOT mean that coach would be a winner at Tennessee. It doesn't mean the 3 million a year coach is any better or as good a coach as Coach Martin.
True VOL fans are going to support Coach Martin 100%. If he doesn't produce championship caliber teams in a couple of
years, that is the time to bash the man.
He is our coach, everything I have read and heard reported about him has been very impressive. Give him a chance to do his job.
All this bashing before the man and his family Has a chance to unpack. I hope he or his wife is not reading volnation. I'm sure some of the post on here will really make them feel welcome to Knoxville..Some of the things said on here about Coach Martin and Coach Dooley are pathetic.

It's amazing some of our posters think they know more about the process of hiring a basketball coach than Hamilton. It's even more amazing that UT hasn't contracted one of our esteemed posters as a consultant to their basketball program. I will go with the recommendations of Grunfeld and Houston over ANY poster in this forum because either one of them FORGOT more about basketball and coaching than ANY poster in this forum has ever known.

That being said, they knew they were going to hire Cuonzo before they fired Pearl. I love the hire and YES, would rather have him than Krueger

Do you really believe the first time Grunfeld was asked for his opinion was the Pearl hire? What about the previous coaches that flopped? Peterson, Green, Houston, etc?

Michael Jordan knows more about basketball then any of us too. Doesn't mean he would make a good GM and hire the best coach or sign the best players.

Come on. Look at Grunfeld's awesome recent history of coaching hires at his day job.

Yes. Doug Dickey DID NOT request Grunfeld's opinion while he was AD. In fact, many of our former players who played under Mears hated the fact Dickey was the AD here.

At Harvard? As I said, I don't think they offer merit-based scholarships either. I'm not as familiar with Yale.

Absolutely no question that the major reason he scored little against us compared to other teams was the fact that Mears played the slow down game. Actually, those Mears' teams were some very good teams for that time.

Mears only played slow down until the 73-74 season. Then he played up tempo for the remainder of his tenure. Averaged over 80/game without a shot clock or three point line

Of course they can land Marshall. We could have landed Marshall; we chose Martin instead. I'm not completely convinced that Marshall is obviously better than Martin. Martin swept Marshall this year.

And Marshall swept Martin the year before. Here's some differences:

1. He transformed unknown Winthrop into a program that dominated it's conference, and began to play competitively even in the NCAAs toward the second-half of his tenure there.
2. He has shown the ability to have success in both the regular season and in conference tourney/NIT post-season play.
3. His programs steadily improved at both places.
4. His programs have generally exceeded his predecessors at both locales, often dramatically so.
5. He's been the best recruiter in the conference during his tenure there, as measured by recruiting rankings of his players and the programs he beat out to get his players, while Martin has been one of the weakest.

The "scholarship" is indirect -- it's admission to the school itself based principally on athletic ability, then a strong needs-based financial aid package to cover all expenses. For the vast majority of good athletes with decent-enough grades to get admitted, it's the same, or more generous, than "athletics scholarships" at other schools. Unless one counts Auburn, of course.

Get over it. You're still upset about Phillip getting fired for running the football program into the ground:p

Out of all of TN's negatives, how would you rank them based on how much they affected a big name coach coming here?

- Threat of NCAA sanctions
- Hamilton - his comments about Pearl just before the NCAA tourney, lack of gravitas, PR nightmare, etc.
- $$$$$ .. We weren't willing to pay our BB coach more than our FB coach .. or our Lady Vol BB coach?
- Lack of tradition?

IMO
1. we weren't will to pay the $$$$ even w/ a $100M athletic budget. We probably weren't willing to pay the coach of a program on the rise > $1.8M.
2. Hambone
3. NCAA sanctions
a distant 4. lack of tradition

What's with the obsession of Lon Kruger? The dude has barely over 60% win percentage (479–304 (.612) and has had only two good tourney runs (elite eight with k-state and a final four with florida and The Meat Hook)?

He is an older coach in a business that is fast becoming a young coach's sport. Look at the Final Four for instance. Calhoun is a dinosaur and Calipari is still relatively young. Then you have two 30-something head coaches.

I want someone who can be here for 10 years plus and build some stability and I thought we had it with Pearl till he started trying to cheat to keep up with the Joneses.

We are not going to spend the money plus no big name coach wants this job because of possible sanctions. It's not that hard to figure out why we hired who we did.

Yep. As long as the same decision makers are in place, we can never expect to get a proven coach in ANY sport. Absolutely mind blowing.

Lon Krugers record....

21 years coaching college basketball
13 NCAA appearances including 9 in his last 17 years
3 times past the second round (one 22 years ago)
3 of his 4 coaching stops at schools with a FAR better basketball history then UT.

So we missed out on???

My thoughts exactly (except it's 25 years). If Martin can match Kruker by winning 61% of his games and making the tourney about half the time...the hire will have been a complete failure.

I heard that Grunfield recommended Bruce Pearl back when they hired Jerry Green, but they went ahead and took Green anyway, and Grunfield told them that if they weren't going to go with who he recommended, to quit asking him. But, they did go with who he recommended this time.

Williams signed an extension with Marquette. Looks like the only big candidate left is Marshall at Wichita State.

But to be fair:
Marshall was in his 12th year as a head coach last year and Martin was in his second.
It takes time to develop recruiting territories.
Martin is a Keady product. Four other Keady assistants had teams in the dance this year including Stallings.
Cuonzo could turn out to be the best of the crop.
But I'm a Cuonzo fan. So it's just MO.
