Offense is broken

If we had probably any other Heupel defense this season, we would have had to have fought to make a bowl. I’m sorry but the offense is mediocre. 25 ppg in SEC play is no better than mediocre. And you can tell it is mediocre because if anyone had predicted us to only score 25 a game in conference play before this season started, you would have called them an idiot.

The conference leader in PPG was A&M with 29. So I don't know what the ef you're talking about.

With OU and TX on board and no more divisions, that is just the reality of the SEC.

Lots of games other than ours that were in the 20’s or lower this year. It just proves some are underrating SEC defenses. Georgia-Ky 13-12, Oklahoma-Bama 24-3 and many others. Defense has made it tougher, some folks think if you don’t score 40 in sec games your offense isn’t good. That just isn’t true, defense is played in the SEC. GBO

Okay, so I decided to dig a little deeper on offensive stats. It required a bit of manual work, so I only included playoff teams. Here are the offensive stats rankings for each team vs P4 bowl eligible teams(I added Boise St stats for Oregon since they are a playoff team), with those teams listed in parentheses:
YPG
1. Oregon-461.5(Boise St, Ohio St., Illinois, Michigan, Washington, Penn St.)
2. Penn St-426.29(West Virginia, Illinois, USC, Ohio St, Washington, Minnesota, Oregon)
3. SMU-420.5(BYU, TCU, Louisville, Duke, Pitt, Boston College, Cal, Clemson)
4. Boise St-414.5(Oregon, Washington St.)
5. Arizona St-410.5(Texas Tech, Kansas St, BYU, Iowa St)
6. Texas-396.12(Michigan, Oklahoma, Georgiax2, Vandy, Florida, Arkansas, Texas A&M)
7. Tennessee-387(NC State, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Vandy)
8. Georgia-385.5(Clemson, Alabama, Texas x2, Florida, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Georgia Tech)
9. Clemson-375.71(Georgia, NC St, Louisville, Va Tech, Pitt, South Carolina, SMU)
10. Notre Dame-363.75(Texas A&M, Louisville, Georgia Tech, USC)
11. Ohio St-348.38(Iowa, Oregon, Nebraska, Penn St, Indiana, Michigan)
12. Indiana-301(Nebraska, Washington, Michigan, Ohio St)

PPG
1. Oregon-39.83
2. Boise St-39.5
3. SMU-37.25
4. Notre Dame-33.5
5. Indiana-30.5
6. Georgia-30.13
7. Arizona St-29.75
8. Penn St-28.42
9. Tennessee-27.14
10. Texas-26.5
11. Ohio St-25.83
12. Clemson-25.57

We ran the offense very differently than we did the first couple of years. For one, Hooker is one of the best QBs ever to play here. That makes a difference. We also had better WR talent. But, we also had a worse defense those years. We played offense this year to run more clock and minimize the time the defense was on the field. Way fewer three and outs with 45 seconds of game clock running off before the defense had to march back out.

The bottom line, the adjustment worked and we finished in the top 10 and made the playoffs.

We are bottom half of the SEC and bottom half of the playoff teams in offensive output against P4 teams. But we did things like call timeout late against UTEP and did an onside kick against Kent State and whatnot, so those overall stats look half decent with no context.

We're only top 10 in yards per game and TDs for the seasy

I'm so sick of this narrative. I think everyone locally and nationally expects the 2022 offense. Therefore, they assume we are 'bad' this year on offense. It's not statistically true at all. We're top 10. Ohio State is #38 in total offense for those wondering, and they beat down plenty of cupcakes too.
I think you are exactly right. These dumb fans or so called fans, if they can't see where our program is after 4 years and realize that we were one of the worst teams when he took over, needs to find a team that is perfect.

While this is true and since we are adding context, we also, took our starts out at halftime of the Chattanooga game, halfway through the second quarter of the Kent St game, and at the end of the 3rd quarter of the UTEP game. Indiana, for example, left Rourke in the entire FIU game(won 31-7) and a few minutes into the fourth quarter of the Purdue game(leading 59-0). Ohio St left Will Howard in until halfway through the fourth quarter against Akron(leading 45-6). Point being, you can pick apart "context" with just about any team.

The reality is that we have not played to our full potential on offense this year. And, in my view, we are suffering from far too many self-inflicted wounds thru stupid penalties. I am anxious to see us break-out against Ohio State - and to play a disciplined, (largely) penalty-free game in Columbus.

it is a mistake to compare 24 with 22. It is my BEST GUESS that tempo was slowed, and receiver windows narrowed to better support this years defense. Not an option in 22. We did not have to play the OUTSCORE them game if we kept the D rested and did not risk field position shifts to give the other guys a short field. Couple that with a Sampson led ground game and there you have it. Safety first. Check out the Vandy passing game when we got down 2 TD’s.

Our defense gave the offense more opportunities this year than it has in the past. Our offense should have increased numbers significantly more based on what the defense did for them. Having said that, it's a team sport and you don't need a great offense or defense to win. You need them to work together in each game to get us 1 more point than our opponent. We did not have a tough schedule this year. We had an average schedule in the SEC and our out of conference games were flops. We avoided South Carolina, Texas, and Ole Miss, but did play Bama and Georgia. I began to expect more from our offense as the season progressed. I assumed the more snaps we got, the more we would push the ball down the field. In being honest, I didn't expect us to have a 10 win season, but I didn't see our defense playing as well as it has. I don't think the offense is playing great ball still, but we run pretty effectively. There is a lot to improve on though, so I wouldn't agree that we are broken, but we aren't running offense as we have in the past.

Didn’t Dooley manage top tier offenses with .500 results?

I’d much rather this year’s combination than that.
Yep, Tyler Bray would put up big numbers score 42 and lose 45 to 42 happened a lot in 2012. The Sal Sunseri D killed the 2012-year great O numbers for naught.

Middle of the league is average, not "pretty damn good". Take away Sampson and we are in the basement in the SEC on offense.
8th in the COUNTRY. Are you capable of critical thinking? We are eights in total offense in the entire country. After the first three games we were number one in the country. He did not mean eighth in the SEC. Try googling something for once.

Here is the comparison for CJH's first four years:

1734046164454.png

3rd best year in scoring offense
2nd best year in rushing offense
4th best year in passing office (by a long shot)
2nd best year in total offense

I guess slinging the ball makes for a 'better' offense?

Other stats are down, too like time of possession (because Heupel normally scores so quickly. I guess I get it...it's "down" for CJH?

Since you obviously have analyzed the roster and other pertinent info, can you expound on this “full potential?”

Is it based on fact and actual coaching experience? Or just sticking your wet finger into the wind and making an emotional guess?

Tennessee is top 10 in total yards per game but oh boy if you look at the split.... They are 9th in russing yards per game and 62ND in passing yards per game. THAT is where this narrative comes from.

The issue for Tennessee is that Ohio State's defense gave up fewer yards per game than our defense both in passing and rushing and their defense gave up the fewest PPG in the nation.

We are going on the road at night in the cold against a top team with the #1 defense in the nation.

Even if our offense isn't as bad as some say it's going to have to be absolutely perfect against OSU.

I expect this game to be a rock fight.

Why should we take away Sampson? Was he an ineligible player or something? You see, you keep adjusting the variables to try to make a point. Okay, the offensive production was very frustrating at times, but it was not due to a broken system. It was mostly a matter of crucial mistakes at crucial times that killed drives. And I felt like Nico took a while to shake the tentativeness that plagued things through the middle of the season. To me, it was evident that he really came on late and the offense is starting to click.

Our offense is fine. Nico is developing into to an All-SEC QB. How many other teams in the playoffs got there starting a redshirt freshman QB?

What does that have to do with it? Take away everyone’s cupcakes and their numbers would drop significantly.
significantly, yes, but not evenly. If you exclude just FCS opponents for everyone, UT drops from 8th to 15th in points per game. If you limit to ppg against FBS teams with winning records, UT is 75th.
