Official Brexit Referendum Discussion

Why? Why can’t they just agree to leave the border as is? Why does that have to change if the two countries involved don’t want it to?

Because Ireland is in the EU single market and the UK would not be if it completely leaves the EU. It would kind of be like us eliminating the border with Canada.

Oh, so Ireland is prohibited from from deciding how to run their border with England because they belong to the EU? Interesting. No wonder there are people who want to leave the EU.

Yes, if there are different trade rules for the two countries.

Do you think Mexico should be able to ship into the US whatever it wants, regardless of what NAFTA says?

Terrible analogy. We don't have to go to a 3rd party and ask permission to run our borders or trade with our immediate neighbors as we see fit.

As far as I know Ireland has voiced no objection to the EU backstop. Feel free to provide a link if that's wrong.

It's not Ireland or Northern Ireland who wants Brexit, it's English voters.

If given the choice, Ireland would follow suit...along with a host of other countries...

And the EU knows it...

If you're going to have the UK outside the EU economic market, then you have to have an Irish border with checkpoints between Ireland and Northern Ireland. But no one in Ireland wants a border with check points. So there you go. Simple.

Moreover, even for people wanting Brexit, there's are different options as far as the trade relationship with the EU, and right now none of the MPs are wanting to compromise, because they think by holding out their position (soft versus hard Brexit) will eventually win.

So, your argument is that the Brexit is evil because Ireland doesn't want a border, but the EU is OK because Ireland doesn't mind a border?

I don't think you've ironed out your argument yet.

My argument is that if there are two bordering countries who do not have a free trade agreement, it's perfectly sensible to require a border. How can you not have one? What happened to that red hat "a nation without a border isn't a nation" stuff?

Why are so many Brexiteers bent out of shape about having a hard Irish border? What happened to sovereignty?

I couldn't care less whether they have a border or not. I'm just pointing out that your outrage is inconsistent.

Looks like we are getting closer and closer to a BREXIT reversal.

I don't see it in the current parliament. Maybe if there's a lengthy extension and another campaign. Changing the Conservative leader isn't going change the party's stance.

There will be another election if there is a motion of no confidence, right?

At this point they need to just change governments. They are 6 days from BREXIT and have no deal. The impact it could have on the British economy and world affairs could be dire.

If they can get a vote of no confidence then not just in the party but by the entire parliament then yes that would lead to a new elections for the entire government. But it’s far too late in the game. They British either do a hard exit or none at all at this point.
