If Jackson comes back, and especially in the event that we add Knox (coupled with an already signed Felton), it's very possible we return to the title game again next year.
Alas, I don't think that happens. I think Jackson is likely gone. Yes, he still has a lot to work on, but he may very well have cemented himself as a late lottery pick this year. I'd love to see him return, but I think he's probably gone.
On a related note, I was wrong about Roy. I began to realize that last year but now know it positively this year. The man can both develop talent and coach. He admittedly went through a bit of a slump there for a while, namely after the allegations first broke, but, man, has he recovered. He turned Johnson into an NBA player, and has developed Jackson nicely. He also made Meeks into far more a solid post player than I ever thought he'd be. No, Meeks will never have a big NBA career (just doesn't have the physical ability), but Roy took him about as far as a coach could take a player of that physical and athletic skill set.
Roy also showed a willingness to adjust defenses, which may very well have won him the Arkansas game among others.
This was not the most dominant UNC team. There were better ones that didn't even make the Final Four, in my opinion. But, in some ways, this may be the most special one (even more than the '09 team that just steamrolled all opponents). '17 largely won with defense, unlike any of those other title teams. This team grit it out game after game against top-notch opponents, mostly with experience and mental fortitude.
And that is the mark of good coaching.
