Official "eat crow" because Butch was hired here thread

I love the sentiment....but think I will just stick with what my poor ole dead momma use to say

"Talk is cheap"

and remembering Mom's words of sound advice, I will wait till CBJ and staff do something before I declare them the second coming of Tennessee Football...when they do I will give them their do

I have already said, I celebrate their recruiting successes of late

ISorry, but I had to step back in before this poor thread dies......:)

My Mom died six years ago and no one was a bigger Volunteer homer...and no one knew less about something they loved with such devotion...she adored Coach Fulmer and any questions as to his job security were summarily dismissed...she died with him still gainfully employed and with the advice to never let somebody tell me WHAT to know...cause until you prove otherwise...I know as much

Yes I think the guy was done wrong. 2.5 seasons to get it done with the mess UT was in is ridiculous expectations. Have no problems with cbj and hoping he does great cause that means UT is doing great. But if this fan base doesn't learn to simmer its expectations some cbj could face the same fate. That's what I've been trying to say. Like it or not. Understand or not. Is what it is.

Btw - its been stated by, deerpark iirc (whomever the poster is that is in the AD), that the coaches would be levied with Bray after games cause he would change plays and not do what they wanted him to. This would affect the gameplan immensely. Never said dooley didn't have his bad moments but knowing this I can't judge the guy as a bad gameplanner. Imo

Also, the call at the end of the Mizzou game to many was a bad one. To me it wasn't. At first I was upset when I saw him kill the clock but after a second of wondering what he was thinking I figured it out. He confirmed in his presser what I thought was the reason too. The guy is a lot smarter than people think he is imo.
Just because I have two ears doesn't mean you must say it twice.

I am still not sold on the hire but he is doing things right so far. Anyone is an improvement over what we just endured. I am waiting to see how the recruiting holds up after what is probably going to be a tough season. 7-5 is probably a decent record with where we are as a program.

dooley and kiffin set the program back years---it will take butch 2-3 years to rebuild the talent

Lulz. I think you mean Fulmer.

Dooley left our program in better shape than he found it.

Lane was push.

Fulmer drove the program into the ground.

Ill start off. I was out of town, and almost gave up on us ever having a capable coach when I read the news of Jones being hired. I of course did some research, and as always (Dooley being the lone exception( convinced myself he could get the job done. My lone worry was recruiting. I knew recruiting to UT, was different that Cincy, and that if he was good, we would see the results. Well, he has blown past my best expectations in a little over three months. The man has proven he can coach, and now he is showing everyone he can recruit. Russia got a falling star, UT may have gotten one too. But only people getting hurt here are opposing coaches feelings, knowing they can no longer cherry pick this states top talent. If this week is any inclination of what's to come, consider me giddy.

I was wrong about Butch. Any others?

You still doin night shift on the gruden thread?

Fulmer would have won 8-9 games with last year's team.

You mean with Chavis as D coordinator?

Even then, I am not sure. I doubt he would have ever had Chaney as OC.

He sure as hell could not rebuild the program from a recruiting stand point.

Negative. I haven't thought that question over, nor do I care to. I am saying I wanted Strong, was disappointed by the CBJ hire, but have been pleasantly surprised by him. I now think CBJ will do well here.

Same. Don't know why it's so hard for people to understand.

Telling people to eat crow four months after someone took the job with a 0-0 record is like giving a Big Mac to a fat guy as a treat for losing two pounds. Ain't very bright.

He isn't 0-0. So far he has done everything right. It's not like we don't have a body of work to judge his coaching abilities.

Ill take my Big Mac now.

Wilcox left because it was obvious that Dooley was an incompetent coach. So yes, I agree that if Dooley weren't an incompetent coach, we would have won 8-9 games.

It is amazing that you know Wilcox on a personal level. Please, tell me more.

Good God alive. The man was 152-52. He won a National Title and ran one of the elite programs in the country. His 16 year run was the best we've had since General Neyland and you just casually say he pretty much sucked? Damn.

Look, we all know Phil limped out a little bit, his last 4-5 years weren't up to the incredibly high standards that HE set during his tenure. .. And for that, he lost his job. I'm sure we all had our criticisms, I know I had a few, it's only human nature. But, in retrospect, after the Kiffin/Dooley reign of terror, we should all drop to our knees and pray our beloved program one day gets back close to what it was during the Phil Fulmer Era, cause those years were special and put UT Football back on the National map.

What we all are desperately hoping Butch takes us to is the success we once had when Phil was our coach.

Can't say I totally disagree.

The standards for Tennessee football were by no means set by Fulmer.

His success here was wildly overrated. Very weak SEC, got his ass handed to him by the only decent team in the SEC (UF), had a pretty lucky run one year for the NC, etc. Look, I am happy he had success here but I am not blind to the conditions of success he had in the 90's.

And, dear God, don't ever mention his name in the same sentence with General Neyland. Don't insult General Neyland like that.

Do you ever find it interesting that a 152-52 guy with an NC hasn't been able to get a job despite being reportedly interested in still coaching?

Limped out? Really? He wrecked the program. The reason Kiffin/Dooley didn't have success was directly due to Fulmer's incompetence.

He got exposed for he who really was; a fraud. When the other guys in the neighbor stepped up there game by getting serious with their football programs and hiring top-flight coaches, Fulmer started to tank. It was not a coincidence. He was getting exposed for the quality of coach he really was.

It is amazing that so many on VN still are living in the nostalgia of the 90's with no concept that it was smoke and mirrors in the sense that it would have never happened in today's SEC.
