I'm gonna stop at Weigel's tomorrow and get a pint of milk and a donut and 20 gallons of fuel. And every three days after that for the rest of my life. Who's with me?

For those saying that in light of Haslam's Backstab we should lower our expectations of the coach we hire:

HELL.
NO.

If you think somehow in the last 8 hours Gruden became undesirable as our coach, make that argument here, if you can.

But don't roll over and settle. Don't do it. Go read Maxim's 3 and 7 over and over if you have to.

Put on more steam.

FWIW it seems to me that Currie had decided on Schiano long before he fired Butch. I think that is why he waited so long since Schiano had a season to coach, and Butch was a better option than any interim. He hoped to make a bowl game with Butch, and when that wasn't really possible, he fired him and struck a deal with Schiano. There was no reason to announce it until after OSU last game.

Many on here keep referring to Schiano as Currie's man. This was not Currie's decision!

This all Haslam! He wanted to hire Schiano at the Brown's almost 3 years ago. This is Haslam's deal and Currie was simply the messenger!

What if.. (and this is a stretch).. but what if:

Schiano was supposed to be a Gruden assistant. And the contract in question was actually for the DC job. He and Gruden both coached at Tampa.. maybe a connection there. I'm sure they at least know each other.

So it could be that Gruden wanted Schiano as his DC. Didn't think much about the Sandusky connection, since he's currently an OC and hasn't faced any backlash. Someone caught wind of a contract between Schiano and UT and assumed it was for HC, so they ran with the story.

Now Currie and the UTAD are in a tough position.. because they can't say it was for DC without prematurely announcing Gruden. And they can't completely turn on him because he was Gruden's guy. None of this backlash would have happened if we got Gruden first and Schiano came on later.

Like I said, its a stretch of a theory.. but as crazy as today was, nothing going forward will surprise me.

that's def a theory I guess but if I'm Currie and I have gruden within 1000 miles of me and he is any kind of willing he is on the podium in 10 I don't care if he has on a prom dress.

Thank you to all of Volnation for standing up for our great university. That makes me very proud to be a Vol today.

And thank you to all the folks who have brought information. I believe that each of you were just bringing what you thought to be true.

And for all of you getting mad at the people on this thread, like others have said, direct your anger where it is deserved: our AD and anyone who sponsored this "attempted" hire.

I believe we will rise from this. Somehow. Some way. My faith is somewhat shattered on this hire but the fact is no one has been given the job yet, officially. So some hope is left.

Hold on folks. Love your Vols. Love your family. Love your friends.

And stay united, Volnation.

Good post. Like others have said, I appreciate the info that was brought to this thread.

John Bruce:

The latest on the @Vol_Football fiasco: UT expected to owe Schiano $$; Currie knew about PSU, a new name from past 24 hours & more: http://gridironnow.com/day-unlike-tennessee-ends-egg-ads-face-still-no-coach/

What a s**t show. This says many were told about his psu mess.

At a place too ripe with drama and too often a national punchline, University of Tennessee leaders – especially athletics director John Currie and chancellor Beverly Davenport – one-upped themselves on Sunday afternoon with an ill-conceived agreement for the Vols’ next head football coach and then a mad dash of scrambling to jettison the agreement.

Greg Schiano, a one-time NFL head coach who’s most recently been serving as Ohio State’s defensive coordinator, had agreed to become Tennessee’s replacement for the fired Butch Jones, dismissed November 12 after compiling a 34-27 ledger in not quite five full seasons.

Schiano, per multiple people and reports, even had inked a memorandum of understanding that also had been signed by Currie, who took over UT athletics in April after Tennessee mysteriously forced out Dave Hart.

Per sources with intimate knowledge of the situation, Tennessee will eventually have to mitigate the terms of the M.O.U. with Schiano and is expected to owe settlement money to Schiano.

Sources also indicated that Currie used a third party to tell Schiano he would be pulling out of the deal, hours after signing the pact and also less than 24 hours after Currie was informed, per sources, of Schiano’s past at Penn State. That past, and his reportedly having knowledge of Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky acting inappropriately with young boys while doing nothing to prevent it or bring it to anyone’s attention, is the trigger which led to the unprecedented social media backlash against the decision by Tennessee fans and media members which ulimately prevented Schiano’s hiring in a historic showing of, in a sense, college football democracy. Currie choosing to move forward with Schiano as a candidate and still electing to sign the M.O.U. on behalf of Tennessee is a decision he will one day have to answer for.

So Tennessee is still in need of a coach and perhaps never has had more national egg on its face – think scrambled with an extra dose of public shaming.

Where do the Vols go from here after fan protests, politicians’ statements, and national attention on Sunday prompted Currie to walk away from the deal?

A source with first-hand knowledge said Tennessee has contacted Purdue coach Jeff Brohm, as well as Southern Cal offensive coordinator Tee Martin. Brohm, per sources at Purdue, mostly operates without an agent while Martin is represented by Jimmy Sexton.

It should be noted that in talking with multiple sources, they emphasized that Currie – and therefore UT leaders – were made fully aware of Schiano’s entire coaching past, including Penn State, and also were informed that Schiano had steadfastly received clean background checks at each coaching post. What’s interesting to note in just how many Tennessee people signed off on Schiano is that the Cleveland Browns (owned by Volunteer booster Jimmy Haslam) interviewed Schiano for their vacancy before ultimately hiring Hue Jackson.

Tennessee had interviewed Iowa State’s Matt Campbell, per people familiar with UT’s search, but had been scared away by Campbell’s prodigious $9 million buyout. Dan Mullen, who contemplated the Tennessee job, accepted the head coaching position at Florida on Sunday.

I don't think Peyton, Phil, or anyone is going to step forward and address this until Currie does.

They aren't going to make themselves a focal point of the backlash, and they shouldn't.

Either the Brb or Currie need to step forward and take the heat.

THEN and only then after Currie is gone should someone step forward and lead the program out of this.

Jmo

There is no getting out of this now. All that can be done is to manage the fallout and hire some schmuck to be the caretaker for the next four years.

Hopefully in that time frame the Haslams will be marginalized by others or become incapacitated to the point they can no longer interfere with Tennessee Athletics.

This is where we find ourselves. Though it will be hard I will no longer buy tickets, clothing etc. I will become a casual fan, my Saturdays will be spent doing more enjoyable things. When this administration decides they are serious about this football program I will once again be a T-total fan.

I feel horrible for these players. I know a recruit currently being recruited in the 2019 class. If he asks me or opens the door for opinion I will tell him I love Tennessee but I would not recommend he commit to Tennessee right now but he should follow his heart wherever that leads.

I am disgusted and at a loss for words. Any one who supported this decision to offer Schiano needs to sever ties with this University. And yes, that would include Peyton if reports are true.

Nobody is saying Gruden is undesirable. It's our job that currently looks like ****.

Even if Gruden was available, do you think he would want to come work for Haslam? Or an AD/administration that tried to hire Schiano? That's currently getting destroyed by the media?
