Official Jon Gruden Thread XLIII

Hard to believe we get to noon without a PR about yesterday. Get a clue AD/admin!

Currie is running and hiding. He doesn't communicate. Hasn't throughout this whole process. It's his screwup and he doesn't want to face the music.

My guess, based on info here, at what happened:

A group of boosters wanted Joh Gruden as coach. The Haslems, Currie and Davenport feigned support of the initiative. The booster group proceed to gauge Gruden's interest and what it would take to get him to UT. They came to general agreement over three weeks ago and even celebrated the agreement on Wednesday in Dunwoody, GA two weeks ago. While legal matters were being worked out, the Haslems, Currie and Davenport were pursuing their own agenda to maintain complete control of UT athletics. The Haslems, thinking they alone know what is best for UT, were enamored with Schiano when he previously interviewed for the Browns coaching job(this was before the release of the previously sealed testimony of the Sandusky case implicating Schiano, thus the lack of due diligence on Schiano, because they had already vetted him). They thought he was a better fit for UT than Gruden. They knew they couldn't sell Schiano to the other boosters, so they kept Currie and Davenport on a short leash and thought they could have the deal done before the other boosters could do anything about it. Once announced, the other boosters would be obliged to support their new coach. It would have worked except a member of the AD staff leaked the deal to other boosters and they mobilized the support of the UT BOT and legislators.

Probably about 99% correct. And thank God for the one person who had the stones to let the info out.

I don't have any inside info on that side of the equation, but they HAVE to be scrambling big time now to figure out something, and I hope they fail at whatever plan is in store for us next, change is needed

I don't think they are scrambling, I honestly don't think they care. Haslam obviously doesn't give a **** other than what her personally wants and Currie is just doing what his master is telling him to do. I don't think Currie gets fired and I don't think we make a hire for a couple of weeks and it will be some other clown that has no business coaching.

Hyamms said this am that Currie wanted to make a statement/presser last night but was advised against it. Of course he could’ve been talking about the hiring of Phill.

Retaining Hoke for a full season is probably our best option right now

The best option right now is to relieve John Currie from is duties post haste. Insert Blackburn as soon as possible. Have a sit down talk with the Haslams. Be courteous, explain that they are more than welcome to donate like everyone else, but they no longer have complete control of the football program. Give Blackburn whatever he needs to make a successful hire whether that is Gruden, Peterson, Cutcliff, or someone else he sees fit.

Agreed. Because if Haslam has demonstrated anything it's his extreme skill in running a football program. Everybody can see the Browns are poised to rule the NFL for decades.

I am leaning toward this too. I was giving this new regime a chance but apparently they’re still as inept as ever. I just wish someone would say something. Not a word from anyone. Who’s got our back today??

In way over his head....

He is a puppet. Nothing more. And, in that role, he is doing a fantastic job.

It is the people pulling the strings that we need to focus on. Think about it. This is at least the third straight coaching search at UT that they have screwed up royally (with three different ADs). The AD changes, but the results remain the same.

Was this a calculated coup that got way out of hand? Leadership is about to change at the top. Were "insiders" hearing from those about to take over the position (DB) to create the narrative? If Currie is about to be fired did he walk into a trap set for him? Was Schiano actually offered? Is there an internal war between the boosters about he future of UT football and one side opened up this crazy narrative? I ask all these questions, because at the end of the day, to think that at some point in Currie's mind (or anyone's for that matter) he thought, "Schiano is a great choice for HC," seems more unbelievable than any other option. Something is awry.

I agree.

I sent an email with this very train of thought to the administration last night. I doubt anybody is listrening. Tone deaf idiots.

Currie can't survive this, we talk about how a coach has to go when they lose the team. Currie has lost the fan base!

Yes, caning him will set the program back a few MORE years but he and Davenport have to be shown the door.

First, as a UT alum, I am proud of Vol Nation for standing up yesterday for the essence of what UT really is. Great moment in history.

Second, something is bothering me about what happened. Things felt very choreographed yesterday. Gruden article comes out. Then immediately, news leaks of Currie to Columbus, then negotiations with Schiano. There is an immediate backlash on social media and then protests on campus. Then, within hours the deal is announced as dead and there is no statement at all from the AD? What AD kills a deal within hours based on fan backlash? What AD, in our image-control society, doesn’t issue a statement for damage control?

This just seems very weird to me. Would really like an insider’s take on all this. I hope that you insiders keep posting and don’t listen to thise trying to call you out. You people brought the info you had. Would love some more info now, please.

And still silence from the Gruden camp.

Somebody said yesterday he gonna come left field...Im all in until I have to get out.
