Official Peyton Manning megamerge

The contract was signed knowing he would not play this year, so this terrible guy paid Peyton 26 million knowing he would not take a snap this year. How many other owners would have done that? You may have given up "some pretty good chunks" but I guarantee you didn't knowing an employee could not work for an entire year.

Irsay did not know Peyton would not play this year when the contract was signed - WRONG.

Peyton is a control freak and doesn't like Irsay holding him hostage. It goes against his nature, and I think he couldn't hold it in any longer. He, however, agreed to the contract terms and will have to live with them.

Irsay, on the other hand, has two agendas IMO:

1. He had to be embarrassed by what transpired in 2011 and is looking to blame everybody but himself. It is fair to blame Polian and Caldwell, but Peyton did not make the personnel decisions.

2. He is starting to steel himself and the city emotionally to the fact that Manning is not going to be playing there next season. The funny thing is that it just doesn't make good business sense for the Colts (too much money) nor does it make career sense for Payton (wasting the rest of his career on a rebuilding team). Irsay should get together with Peyton, get on the same page, and then both of them stick to the party line. The truth is never a bad strategy IMO.

If Peyton can still play at a high level, however, (which is a huge "if") I pity Irsay if Peyton plays in Indy anytime soon. It will not be pretty to watch the home fan reaction if Peyton comes in and lights up the Colts. Talk about a PR disaster.

lol, the contract was signed no matter what happened was not peytons fault it happened, no i have not paid more then anyone ever but have have gave up some pretty good chunks of money at times and i will also ask again......and?

True. Blaming Peyton for negotiating a better deal on his contract takes a similar logic to those who blame Fulmer for negotiating a better deal on his contract. The object of the game in such negotiations is to secure the best outcome for your side regardless of what ultimately happens. It seems Peyton won that and Irsay lost. Irsay should quit whinning over paying Peyton and still having the option to keep him again.

My guess is a lot of teams would trade the past decade they had without PM for the results and revenues they could have earned if they had him. It's simple economics. Peyton made the man a fortune and he's whinning about that.

Moreover, PM is the only player on the planet who has been negotiating for less money than his market value... including the contract that Irsay is whinning about now.

Several of these blogs.. but like this one's title as it sums up PM's sacrafices for Irsay's Colts...
Peyton Manning Is All About the Team

Irsay wasn't quite as lost concerning PM's value to the team in 2004. With PM (and all else the same), the Colts would have won 10 or more games this past season. Add players in the right positions around PM and they're back in the playoffs with a shot at Super Bowls for the balance of PM's career (3-4 years).

2004 Contract negotiations:
"There was a lot of pressure because we're getting close to the Super Bowl," team owner Jim Irsay said. "If you don't get it done, we're going in a dramatically different direction, and our chances are reduced."

Irsay just fired the guy who was smart enough to pick and retain Peyton. At this point, his new guy appears to be a total idiot... much like Irsay. If it's about economics, say that... and move on or be prepared for public humilation that will accompany the next several losing seasons. You're only making matters worse.

Exactly. I don't think many people would blame the Colts for avoiding the $28 million payment and the amounts owed on the balance of the contract. Making it personal will backfire on Irsay, big time.

That, and the home fan reaction when Peyton rolls into town with a new team and throws 5-6 TD passes against the Colts. That will be a disaster for Irsay, too.

PRO FOOTBALL - Polian Handling All the Details For the Colts - NYTimes.com

Bill Polian was the GM that drafted Peyton, and he was still a VP with the team, but his son Chris had been the GM the past four years, and his time in that position would have to be considered a failure. Poor drafts, poor hires, and poor signings had been the hallmark of his tenure, although he only became soley responsible for the day-to-day operations this past year.

As far as Peyton returning to the Colts and them being able to put a decent team around him, that's probably not feasible. This column below pretty well summarizes the situation, but the Colts are (or should be) in a full rebuild mode. Peyton is done with the Colts.

Yep. In fact, that's the outcome that I hope happens... having been a Colts fan during Peyton's era.

I'm confident that several of the teams who want PM are better fits and give him more potential to win the Super Bowl since the Colts apear hellbent on drafing a player into the only position in which they don't need help (minus Freeney... pretty solid). PM makes practice squad players like Blair White and an Oline that can't hold a Dline off for more than 3 secondslook like legitimate NFL players. This season simply revealed just how illegitimate the team is now... and that extends across a whole lot of offensive positions. He's been doing that gig way too long for Indy.

Would love to see Rex recant on Sanchez... PM means serious SB contention for the Jets. I agree with other that the same is true for Arizona, Washington, Houston, and others who may join the contest. The Ravens, for example, would be the SB favorites next season by simply dumping Joe and signing Peyton. There are a lot of teams who are closer to a SB with Peyton than are the Colts.

OHhhhhh the "TEAT" Tip o' the Teat?

As crappy as it is, there is no loyalty in team sports, its a business and thats the way it will always be...Peyton is the man and will always be the man and Irsay is a Richard...

Teat on

Well-stated. That's bascially what Irsay should say. I think that leads to the most friendly separation possible. :hi:

Peyton Manning + Jim Harbaugh = Multiple Super Bowl Victories For 49ers

Another team that goes from SB contenders to SB favorites with one player exchange.

Talk about an intense pair... the two of them might wear everyone else down, but if the others guys can handle that level of intensity, no team they'd face would ever be better prepared. They also win on strategy... and that only leaves talent (discouting those banking on luck, again). The 9'ers obviously have talent.

My only complaint is that Irsay has made the Colts organization into a "family" atmosphere and operated it in that way. Then, he reverses course and decides he's ready to scrap everything and start over...but expects the few who are still around to still keep everything "in the family." I don't feel sorry for PM, but Irsay is a jackwagon. I'm also aware, though, that Irsay doesn't give a crap about what I think of him and will operate his organization on his own terms (which he has every right to do but it doesn't mean I have to like it).

Also, much attention has been given to the faux pas in the OP title, but my favorite nugget in this thread was the one that said "Irsay is trying to became the Al Davis of football." Is that you Yogi Berra?!?!

Notice all the people siding with Manning are Colts fans? Which means 99% became Colts fans because of Manning. You guys are as bad as Los Angeles Lakers and Chicago Bulls fans. On par with Florida Gator bandwagon fans who were probably at one point Miami and FSU fans.

If this were Tom Brady, you'd side with the owner. Only difference here is you've been riding Manning's coattails. As great as Peyton has been, he won one championship, his brother has a chance to pass him on Sunday and the only reason Peyton won that championship was thanks to the the defense during the playoff run. We get it... you'll blindly follow any Tennessee player that is an all-time great. It's amazing how quickly how many of you probably turned your back on Crompton, Poole, Pearl, Dooley etc. but Peyton Manning can do no wrong because you'd follow him into the depths of hell.

Tennessee fans are fine and Colts fans are fine but the combination of the two tend to breed some of the most obnoxious, least knowledgeable fans you could ever dream up. A number of them pull for the Chiefs as their second favorite team because of Eric Berry. What is that? It's disturbing that so many people are obsessed with one man. It's weird enough we all cheer for a group of men to play a game with each other on the field but now we have people are obsessed with specific ones. Uh.... that's normal. Not fruity at all...

Everybody becomes a fan of a team for one reason or another...and it's not always because it's your home-town team. I grew up in Charlotte but moved to Tennessee one year before the Panthers started playing. So, I never had a home-town NFL team to root for. Peyton Manning is a wonderful ambassador for the University of Tennessee, which I appreciate. As such, I will always hope he has great success...because it benefits the image and reputation of our University. If they had a Peyton icon that I could list as one of my favorite teams I'd use it. But since they don't, I'll use what is available -- the Colts logo.
