Official Thread of the St. Louis Cardinals

Well, they did it.

So long Brett Wallace, I barely knew ye.

The Athletics and Cardinals have completed a trade that sends outfielder Matt Holliday to St. Louis in exchange for third baseman Brett Wallace, outfielder Shane Peterson and right-handed pitcher Clayton Mortensen, sources confirmed to ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

In addition, sources said the Athletics will throw in $1.5 million to the Cardinals.

Cards better re-sign him after this year.

This is quite funny. The Cardinals are always making a deal at the deadline every year.

Wallace just doesn't seem like a ballplayer, but he's survived Memphis. Hopefully looks are deceiving. Here's to hoping you get the July Holliday for the rest of the season and not the april-June Holliday.

they were supposed to get Holliday last year and never did... please enlighten me with any "big" trades the cardinals have made recently... Pujols has needed a bat around him for years now

The Cardinals have made great trades to help themselves at the deadline for years. I have no desire to go look them all up. I know I'm not wrong.

in 2007 they picked up Joel Piniero and Mike Maroth to improve pitching. In 2006 they picked up Ronnie Belliard and Jeff Weaver. In 2004 they gave up a large chunk of their minor league pitching for Larry Walker. The Cardinals are most definitely rarely quiet at the trade deadline.

Just to take it back even further, they acquired Chuck Finley & Scott Rolen at the deadline in 2002 and Will Clark in 2000.

Speaking of deadline acquisitions, Lugo & Holliday are a combined 5-9 with a homer and a couple RBI in their Cardinals debut tonight.

That trade for Jeff Weaver didn't help them win that WS at all.

It wouldn't have hurt the Cardinals to shop around for a back end of the rotation starter rather than focusing all of their energy on the lineup at the trade deadline.

great all around game by the cards tonight.. pitching, defense, hitting were all great.. how great was it to see Holliday get a standing ovation and then double off the wall.. all 3 new guys had a good game.. did anyone else see Pujols tell Derosa what to expect before he hit the HR? Derosa put the first pitch he saw over the wall, Pujols said "i told you so" when Derosa crossed the plate, then Derosa was in the dugout saying "i cant believe that".. the new guys are fitting in great

They said tonight that Holliday and DeRosa hit it off with eachother too.

Wainwright/Billingsley. Huge matchup, huge game... go cards
