Official Thread of the St. Louis Cardinals

Make that a .606 BA after his 3-4, 2 HR game tonight. That sound you hear is Holliday's price tag rocketing out of the Cardinals' reach.

Good thing they've got him now though since Pujols has been slumping somewhat lately. Dude hasn't hit a home run since the first game after the break. What's his effing problem?

You've gotta love picking up Holliday. A true #4 threat behind Albert.

Cardinals are being no-hit by some rookie through five innings. You're damn right I'm trying to jinx it.

...but not as awesome as scoring eight runs in the final three innings to win 12-7.

Managed to get around Pineiro's worst start of the year. The seven runs he allowed tonight was the first time since May 29th he'd allowed more than three earned in a start.

Alright. Time for the Cardinals to put some distance between themselves and the division. Four of the next five series are against the Pirates, Reds, Padres, and then the Padres again with the Dodgers mixed in as well.

Good stuff, Bill.

Looks like another team has rented Shaquille O'Neal for a run at a championship.

Smoltz to St. Louis looking like a distinct possibility. I suppose he can't be any worse than Wellemeyer as the fifth starter.

Should become official after Smoltz clears waivers today. Apparently DeRosa & Wainwright have been talking to Smoltz "convincing" him to come to St. Louis.

I assumed Smoltz would be used as the fifth starter in place of garbage like Wellemeyer & Boggs, but it sounds like they're going to plop Smoltz and his 8.32 ERA down in the eighth inning as the setup guy to Franklin.

Now I don't mind Smoltz going out there and sucking it up every fifth day, the Cardinals have dealt with that all year, but I'm not too crazy about putting an old pitcher who appears to be done on the mound late in the game as the Cards try to hold a lead.

Wainwright is rolling. Gave up a pair of solo homers in the seventh tonight which eventually led to a no decision, but he's now had 11 consecutive starts in which he allowed 2 earned runs or less. Also went at least 6 innings in his last 24 starts.

Again, leads to another one run victory over the Dodgers. :banghead2:

7 game lead. With several games against bad teams remaining, I'm finally starting to believe the Cardinals just might win the division.

Even though he's going to have 5 or 6 fewer starts and fewer innings than a lot of the other contenders, I'm officially putting Chris Carpenter's name in the Cy Young Award conversation.

After tonight's win: 14-3, 2.16 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, .223 BAA, 111 Ks, 23 BB, 145.2 IP

Smoltz with 4 Ks in his first 2 innings as a Cardinal.

Now, let's see how the second time through the lineup goes...

Smoltz's line: 5 IP, 75 pitches, 53 strikes, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 9 Ks. Struck out 7 batters in a row at one point.

Make that 12 consecutive starts with 2 runs or less and 25 straight starts of at least 6 innings after 8 scoreless last night. Throw in a league-leading 15 wins and a 2.50 ERA as well.
