Official Thread of the St. Louis Cardinals

It's ok to overpay for Troy Glaus, Jeff Suppan, Lance Berkman and Jake Westbrook but God forbid we actually pay Pujols what he deserves.

There's already enough talk of Pujols to the Cubs that it terrifies me.

I don't know if Cardinals management thinks he can go to the free agent market and find out he can get what he wants because the spenders don't need a first baseman, but I really don't want to have to find out.

The fact that the Cubs are in play means that the Cardinals are eventually going to have to put a brave face on, then bend and submit. The theoretical, far-off pain of having to pay $30 million so Pujols can push himself around in a wheelchair in 2022 is dwarfed by the immediately horrifying prospect of having Pujols The Cubbie smashing homers against you for the next 10 years. If the Yankees and Sox were in play it wouldn't be so bad, because you'd figure one of them would bid Pujols safely over to the other league, but without them in the game the chances that he lands in Wrigley are frighteningly high.

I paid a plumber $400 to come out and unclog a pipe way under my house on New Year's Eve afternoon. It was ridiculous, I got gouged, I'll never call the guy again, but I knew circumstances had me over a barrel and I paid up. The Cardinals are in pretty much the same boat. The only thing dumber than giving Pujols 10 years at $30m per would be standing by and letting the Cubs do it.

If the Cards want to go on the cheap, they should engineer some massive deal where they give Pujols his extension in return for agreeing to a trade to the Red Sox for Gonzalez, whom the Cardinals could then sign to an extension for probably half the money. You just can't let him get on the open market where the Cubs can get at him, though.

Had a conversation with a fellow Redbird fan this weekend that made sense, even if I don't necessarily like it -

Dewitt and Co. are willing to pay him whatever he wants to stay around and that they are going under the assumption that he's not going to get what he expects in the open market and if he is offered that they they will bend over and like it.

They must be 100 percent convinced that he'll give them a chance to match. Sounds like a bit of a dangerous game to me.

Agree. They've had plenty of time to get the inevitable done, you'd think Pujols has a bit of resentment over the club dicking the dog in the process.

They're kidding themselves if they think Pujols isn't going to get what he wants in the open market. The Cubs would be guaranteed to bid heavily, knowing that they'll either actually get him or drive the price up for the Cardinals. Either way, they win. Knowing that, why would the Cardinals even give him a chance to talk to the Cubs? Chicago's a great city. Pujols already has a ring. Dumb to even let him think about it.

Wainwright is the most underrated pitcher in baseball. You can even make a case he has deserved the Cy Young the last two years. I love watching him pitch. My favorite pitcher to watch.

Sorry Card fans. That sucks.

Hey lyls, I need you to accept the invite, because one you do that, then we got all sixteen members signed, sealed, and delivered.

So the cyclical history since the 40s of the Cardinals appears to continue....good in even number decades, bad in odd number decades.....

Baseball Prospectus still has the Cardinals as the favorite in the Central. I don't see it, but I'm at least going to give it some merit to not be as pessimistic. I guess it depends on what they do with the now 5th starter open slot.
