Official Thread of the St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals picked up second baseman Ronnie Belliard from the Indians in exchange for Hector Luna. It's a shame they couldn't send Luna AND Miles to Cleveland.

Belliard is hitting .289 with 8 HRs and 44 RBI. Combined, Luna and Miles are batting .276 with 5 HRs and 43 RBI.

Not a blockbuster, but it should definitely help.

Well, here you go, vader.

The Cards picked up Jorge Sosa from the Braves in exchange for a minor league pitcher.

Scott Mathieson (0-2, 5.48) vs. Jeff Suppan (8-5, 4.98) tonight as the Cards open a three-gamer with the Phillies.

In 3 starts after the All-Star Break, Suppan is 2-0 with a .90 ERA.

Pujols is batting .500 with 3 HRs and 6 RBI in three games vs. the Phillies this season.

Wow, no one ever listens to me. It caught me off guard.

Mathieson comes out throwing like Cy frickin' Young. Pujols' lead-off single in the 4th is the first hit for the Cards tonight.

Belliard with quite the first impression with a throwing error in the 3rd inning allowing an unearned run to score as Suppan ended up giving up 3 runs in the 3rd.

Following Pujols' single, Rolen walked, Edmonds singled home Pujols, Encarnacion tried his best to ground into a double play but it was just a fielder's choice, Edmonds out at second. Belliard executes the suicide squeeze, Rolen scores, Encarnacion to second, Belliard out at first. Molina walks, Suppan singled home Encarnacion, and Eckstein flied out to end the inning.

3-3 going to the 5th.

Suppan immediately surrenders the lead as Ryan Howard hits a leadoff homerun. Next three batters record outs.

Duncan, Pujols, Rolen to bat in the bottom half.

Cards go down 1-2-3 in the 5th.

Some guy named Coste hit another lead off homer off Suppan. Yank him.

5-3 Phills.

Rollins singles, Victorino and Utley struck out, Howard walks to load the bases.

Jorge Sosa comes on and gets Burrell to lineout.

5-3 Phillies

Sosa gets the Phillies in order in the 7th.

Hopefully they'll leave him in the game to bat second in the bottom half in order to show his strong suit and the real reason St. Louis signed him... homerun hitting.

Cardinals lose the series opener with the Phillies 5-3.

Suppan got knocked around pretty well.

Some bright spots I suppose, bullpen pitched 4 scoreless and Sosa went 1 and a third giving up only one hit in his Cards' debut.

58-47

I think you guys might be pleasantly surprised by Sosa. He's got a good arm; just needed a change of scenery. Maybe Dave Duncan can convince him to pitch and not just throw.

Brett Myers (6-5, 3.57) vs. Jeff Weaver (1-1, 6.46) tonight at 7:10CST on ESPN. This will be the Cardinals third appearance on ESPN in the last three weeks, and Weaver has started every one of them.

Another particularly atrocious start by Weaver tonight. 7 runs in only 3 and a third innings pitched. He fooled no one. Get well SOON, Mulder. Please.

Sosa came in and pitched two innings and only gave up one hit again, a solo job by Rowand. Didn't look like a bad pitch, sorta low and outside, but that steroid baby Rowand went the other way with it and barely cleared the right field fence.

Aside from a two run bomb by Duncan to center, Cards can't do anything against Myers.

8-2 Phillies through 5 and 1/3.

Rolen singled home a run in the 6th.

8-3 Phillies through 6.

Utley just struck out to go to 0-4 on the night. Hit streak definitely in jeopardy.

Welcome to Bobby Cox's personal hell.

heh, he looked pretty sharp again other than that, and even that didn't 'look' like a bad pitch even though it ended up about 350 feet away.

Encarnacion singled, Duncan doubled, and Molina actually got a hit with runners in scoring position.

8-5 Phillies, 1 on, 0 outs in the 7th.

Madson relieved Myers and Miles greets him with a two-run homer.

8-7 Phillies, 1 out in the 7th.
