Open practice updates.

I didn't get to read all the post just because I didn't want to read through all the pages but what I have seen so far I agree with. I have seen nothing out of Worley. I have seen something I like in all three of the others. However, the whole time I have seen Worley including the O&W game he just looks out of place and jittery. He also doesn't have the ability to extend plays like the other three. My take is Worley can't be too much better than the others if at all. So why not just go ahead and start a guy you can have for four years? But I know you can't make conclusions after one scrimmage so maybe he just had a bad night in the rain but the others showed some good things throughout.

I didn't go to the game tonight but based on everything I've heard and read, I say take the red jerseys off these QBs and make them live. It's not like one is that much better and i think live game simulation would would be a better litmus test. Be different if we had a definitive starter.

They made the QBs live a couple of times tonight, Peterman and Dobbs actually looked best in those situations.

i haven't seen any post concerning the kicking game, did they work on it any at all ?

Pallardy had three chances to hit a game winner from about 42-45 yards couldn't tell. Missed 2 of 3. Kicking game is bad.
I'm talking field goals. Punting seemed to be fine.

Palardy did struggle tonight with FGs but I didn't see anything from Bullock to make me think he could be an option. Was VERY impressed with Palardy's punting however.

from his past performances,i think his future is as a punter.hopefully he surprises us all this year as a FG kicker, here are some of his stats,he had a 44 yard per punt average last year and that was with some of them weird looking squib kicks

By the way, not trying to bash Worley at all. I'd love to see him succeed here, but I just don't see it. He looks average at best. I know it's only practice, but nothing stands out about his QB play.

Peterman, Dobbs, and even Ferguson have all shown potential to be great. Peterman and Dobbs both extend plays when the throw isn't there, and with our young recievers, I feel like that could be a difference maker for this offense.

If the coaches give Worley the job then he has my support entirely because it's their call, and I have faith that they'll make the best decision. That being said, I don't see Worley keeping the QB job all season long unless he shows a great amount of improvement.

Based on what?

I was there. I liked the up tempo of practice. Really liked how Butch called guys out. My favorite was when he got in a receivers ear for not handing the ball (receiver tossed it) to the referee. After all, it's the small things that make the big difference. QB wise, I'd be highly surprised if there are not multiple QBs playing in game 1. Also wouldn't surprise me if Butch ends up going with a 2 QB system for the season. The main reason I see this happening is Dobbs. He brings a dynamic that the others can't or can't do as well him.

And what can he do that the others can't

Based on "expert" observations of one practice and a couple of compliments thrown toward the Fr of course.

I'm not claiming to be an expert by no means, nor am I trying to say that Worley will not succeed at Tennessee. I'm simply saying that if he performs in any way similar to his performance today in practice, then he will not keep the starting QB job if he is declared the starter IMO. It's not a knock on Worley, it's just that nothing sticks out about his play to me.

Peterman looked as if he could do just as much, and more with the threat of his mobility and toughness. Who knows, maybe Worley comes out and sets the SEC on fire through the air. But the fact that he has yet to lock up the starting job, 2 weeks away from kickoff say a lot IMO.

Exactly. I mean I haven't seen Worley do anything at all special. Complete short passes that is about all. I would love have a standout junior starting QB but it is hard to even tell him from the other three.

I'll pull for whoever CBJ chooses to start in two weeks, but my hope is that Peterman does enough in the next two weeks to earn the starting position.

Peterman was best tonight. Croom looked awsome. North passes the look test. Coleman seems to be a player. Defense looks lightyears ahead of last year.

Here are my points of interest:

1. Defense got into the backfield a lot. This defense will be aggressive and make some plays this year. I'm so relieved by that.

2. I'm not ready to throw Worley under the bus just yet. He struggled, but he struggled against the number 1 defense. The second team defense drops off quite a bit, IMO, and the other quarterbacks took advantage of having the lesser competition.

3. I've been hoping Lane would come back because I think he's the best option we have, but Neal didn't dance around tonight. He ran hard and hit holes hard. This offense will help him a lot, and he could have the year of which we all know he's capable.

4. Kickers. Smh. No further message.

5. Our receiving core will be better than a lot of people think. North looks like a monster.

Those were the biggest things to me.

Solid post.

To touch on some of your points:

2. I agree with this, and this was something I hadn't considered until you posted it (I, being someone who was ready to throw Worley under that bus). It's easy to say the other QB's were much better when the other QB's were playing against a much less skilled defense. Don't get me wrong, Worley will play against better defenses than ours and he needs to play better than he did tonight against those better defenses, so he's a long ways away. But to say him vs any of the other QB's in tonight's practice was a telling comparison is just not true.

4. Agreed. Ugh.

5. North and Croom both. They look like men among boys out there.

I know it may seem odd to some people but there is the possibility that our Defense has improved so much that now its hard for the QB's to actually do things in practice?

The kicking game problems don't really surprise me after the last few years.

Worley not standing out could be a combination of things. He was going up against the starting D and I believe someone said it was raining during practice. Throwing and catching a ball in the rain is hard to do regardless of what level of football you are playing at. This could also explain kicking problems as well.

Last night was my first chance to see CBJ in action, and I did like what I saw. His practice is organized caous. I'm sure others that were there heard this, but when he sent the defense off the field and yelled at the defensive coaches (our defense will not take the field in Neyland Stadium that way). Man you knew right away this coach is for real.

I was there, and Worley struggled, pretty badly.

The defense will be a ton better.

No sign of Marlin Lane.

I saw Marlin, in uniform, on the sideline doing push-ups, sit-ups and stuff during practice with another player in an arm sling. Not sure but it appeared he was being punished for something. Just the way it looked.
