Oregon game - Who's coming to the game?

I am going to the game, traveling with the alumni we are staying at the Valley River inn in Eugene. I cannot wait for Football Time in Tennessee!

Just like any team, we have our "jerks. Usually they are either young or drunk or both. Many of us old farts try to educate them and get them to think in more constructive terms.

It's a problem with success and bandwagon fans.

You'll be right across the parking lot from Valley River Mall. Eugene doesn't have a lot of good shopping, but Valley River is an "ok" mall.

The biking/hiking/walking/running trail between the VRI (Valley River Inn) and the Willamette river is a great connector to the rest of town as well as Autzen Stadium. Cycling can be an easy way to see Eugene. They probably rent bikes there.

Chain restaurants in the area, VRI use to have a good restaurant, but I haven't eaten there in a long time so no promises. Better restaurants down town in my opinion.

FYI: Autzen is about 4 miles driving and 2 miles walking from VRI.

Do you have any reccomendations for any restaurants I always like to try and eat at locals favorite. Do you have any recc for sightseeing

Breakfast:
Glenwood Cafe (13th and Alder, near campus)

Dinner:
Marche 296 E. 5th
Belly, 291 E 5th
Beppe & Gianni's 1646 E 19th

Saturday Mornings try the food booths at the Saturday Market.

For recreation, the coast and sand dunes are about an hour west of Eugene. The coast is rugged with mountains coming right down to the water, the sand dunes are a great place for people who like 4 wheeling. McKenzie River for rafting trips and fly fishing. Mountain biking is pretty big in the area as well. Pretty much anything you like outdoors is available. The mountains are much larger than you see east of the Rockies.

So lots to see and do. Of course if you're a die hard golfer, Bandon Dunes is about a 4/5 hour drive from Eugene. Perhaps the best coastal courses in the country that the public can play

Still in the planning stages on our trip for the game; Would like to spent 2-3 days before the game on the coast; likely flying in to Portland. What areas would you suggest we consider?
Hit one area and stay, or "ride" the coast?
Thanks for any insight.

Portland: Check out the Inn at Northrup Station for a first night. Reasonable price, it's where my wife and I stay when we go to PDX for "retail therapy" (We live in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains east of Eugene). The room comes with a free pass on the "Street Car" which services downtown PDX as well as the "Pearl District" and NW PDX. All desirable destinations. Powells Books is a worthy destination. Great Oregon wineries just SW of PDX. If you like wine, this probably should be a destination. The Allison Hotel in Newberg is quite nice with great food and good access to the wineries. Problem is it's not really on the direct route to the coast.

Head west from PDX to Seaside/Cannon Beach area, nice area, beaches, art galleries, typical beach stuff.

Heading south check out Sylvia Beach Hotel @ Nye Beach near Newport. Comfy funky atmosphere with all rooms have a theme based on a great American author.

Rugged Coast, with mountains coming straight down to the beach. Ft Stevens State Park, I believe it's the only place the Japanese shelled from a navel ship during WWII.

I'd skip sea lion caves, it's a "Road side attraction"

At Florence check out the sand dunes just to the south. This is a big area with those into "4 wheeling" etc.

Heading east to Eugene, you might find a few tasting rooms for some more great Oregon wines.

Hope that gives you some ideas.

I really like the Cannon Beach area as a "destination" of course if you'd like to remove stress from your life, then I'd opt for Sylvia Beach Hotel. I get very relaxed every time I stay there. I usually stay in a beach front room.

Thanks for the info; I may need to plan four or five days on the coast! I had thought about hitting the coast around Lincoln City, spending a night in that area, and then moving on to the Newport area for a night or two and ending the coastal trip near Florence. If I try and start at the Cannon Beach area, Im likely going to need to add a couple days to the trip dont you think?

Have this one circled on my calendar. Have this feeling like it may be UCLA 1989 all over again.

Cannon Beach tends to have "MORE" shops, restaurants, etc. simply because it serves the PDX area. Plus they have some nice beaches. In the summer it can be pretty crowded, but after Labor day things slow down quite a bit.

If you cut across on HWY 18 to Lincoln City you'll go through some really nice wine country. Allison Hotel in Newberg is very nice great food. Owned by a former client of mine. I'd continue on from Lincoln City to the Sylvia Hotel rather than stay in Lincoln City. Might consider the River House in Florence, it's in old town, a number of shops etc. Not on the beach but should be decent.

Also, September can be great weather on the coast. It's one of my favorite times of year to go to the Oregon beach.

It's hard for me to say how long to spend on the coast. It depends on what you like, if I'm going to the beach, it's usually for a couple days, 2 or 3, at one location. Walk on the beach, hit some art galleries, enjoy some good sea food, and just relax.

Note: Sylvia Beach Hotel could likely be booked already. If you're considering it check NOW.

Note 2: These are "two lane roads" for the most part, with some passing lanes. If you are a very aggressive driver, I'd stay away from the coast all together. It's not a place to hurry. That goes for the roads from the Valley to the coast and along the coast. Good news is most of the California RVs are off the road after Labor Day.

GoDucks349, can you give me some recommendations for places to "hang out," grab a bite to eat, watch football games on TV, etc, in Eugene area. First time to Eugene.

Thx

I'm probably not the best source on this subject as I haven't been to a Eugene sports bar in 10 years. I haven't lived in Eugene in about 12 years. I will say, "The Cooler" seems to be a hot place for Duck fans on game day. I believe one of the local sports talk shows broadcast from the Cooler on occasions. This is a funky 1970s building not too far from Autzen. Also, I'd try Steelhead (great micro brew) and Jackalope downtown. If I get any better info I'll pass it along

I guess if it was me, I'd probably go to Steelhead good micro brew and probably decent food. Good location and if you don't like it, you're not that far from some other restaurants and sports bars. "Back in the day" the Cooler wasn't exactly known for good food.

Sounds great. Thanks for the info.

Couple questions, how long are you staying in PDX? And how long are you allowing for the drive down the coast?

Doesn't sound like you have enough time for both.

Its going to be tight! We're flying in Wed., going out in PDX that night. Driving over/down and staying on the coast Thursday. Friday finish the drive to Eugene for a two night stay and the game. Then back to PDX Sunday and flying home Monday. So much to see and do in such little time. My wife is a teacher so unfortunately she can't take more days off. I'd love to spend an entire week.

since game time was just announced as 12pm local, if anyone is interested in starting the festivities in true SEC fashion, The Cooler is near the stadium and I believe they open at 7am on gamedays. they do a breakfast buffet too but we got ours free at Hilton each morning (Gold) and it was great.

That will work. In PDX, Powell's Bookstore is either the largest or second largest bookstore in the country. The Pearl District is pretty nice for shopping, restaurants, bars, and art galleries. The Rose Garden and the Japanese Garden are nice as well. Great views of the city up there. St. Honore is a very nice French bakery with very good espresso as well. What would you like to explore in PDX? I lived there up until two years ago. Great little city with excellent restaurants and mass transit is good as well.
