I've always kind of wondered the same thing. I remember back when people were pissed at Brandon Boyd and calling them sellouts just because he cut his hair. people are dumb.
Usually means people get mad that the band is actually successful. Some seem to like it when the band is "underground" and they feel like they are special since they like the band, and that goes away when they get more popular.
This is of course a broad definition; like I think Nickelback is a sellout group. Their older stuff was actually kind of good but their newer stuff is awful.

i'm not so sure about that based on lyrics alone not to mention musically. that is for sure a matter of opinion. journey is somewhat of a ballad driven band. PJ's music touches several different types of music. imo that is why they have more hype.
maybe i am biased, because PJ is my favorite but i honestly don't think there is even any comparison between those 2.
My thoughts exactly, Journey was decent.
Most people judge Pearl Jam based on what they hear on the radio, their b-sides are better than what most bands could ever produce.
I like PJ better than Journey but that is not a measure of talent.
The core members of Journey were former members of Santana. I guarantee that in terms of musicianship they are at least at PJ levels of talent. Judging lyrical ability is difficult. The Beatles wrote some pretty simple songs lyrically but they were huge hits because they struck a chord with the public.
In the end, it seems people keep coming back to what they like - to me that is a different metric than over/under rated.
Dude......they "sold out" already. Only by they Night was there "sell out" album.
I always thought the Metallica sellout talk was idiotic. Yes, Load and ReLoad weren't "traditional" Metallica and they aren't my favorite but they do have some good songs on them.
And they are way better than St. Anger.
I reserve the phrase "sold out" for a band like Black Eyed Peas that actually changed its sound for commercial appeal. KOL didn't do that.
