Ha, it is a genuine curiosity of mine. Any time I gain a customer from the Chicago area, I ask them about it. 100% of the time, their answers aren't politically correct...
Cnn is horribly inaccurate. Everything they said in november was a lie...and they havent changed. Theres a reason twice as many ppl watch fox. I watch neither...usually BBC when i rarely watch news.
How about 100 years of democratic control for starters ?
That's probably part of it. But there are several large cities that are democrat-controlled that don't have the same problems. Every city has crime issues, but Chicago and places like Baltimore are on the extreme end of the spectrum. I don't think you could just plug a Republican mayor into the city and fix the problem.

Syria has historically always been a horrible place. There accounts of how brutal they were in the Bible. Assad has been the one keeping the crazies in line just as Saddam did in Iraq. If the US gets rid of him then the Middle East will become a lot more dangerous.
