maybe it's because of his ability?
Petrino walked into a terrible situation, certainly. But he certainly didn't do anything to improve it, and by alienating the teams' veterans he helped send the season into a tailspin.
From a coaching standpoint, I don't much care; I didn't see anything from Petrino to indicate that he's much of a coach. His playcalling was pedestrian at best and sometimes awful; he made weird personnel decisions. I just think it sucks that the coach who so famously demanded "total commitment" from his players and everybody else has abruptly bailed on his owner and his team without even finishing out the year.
Did he really alienate them? Perhaps they were unwilling to work with a new system? Perhaps they're all still wearing "Free Mike Vick" t-shirts on live TV? Frankly the 'alienating veterans' line is useless. These are adults and paid professionals. Seeing a change in leadership and a loss of the team god should cause these overpaid crybabies to get their heads out of their rearends and work to win. So you're telling me that because he 'alienated' the veterans they just pouted and decided to hold out on the team?
I just think it's really crappy on Blank and McKay's part to bring in the guy as a new era and then on every decision he made just leave him out in the cold. He received flak from the media and his players on various occasions and his management did nothing to publicly support or back him.
It's obvious this was not about the money. Clearly to pack up and leave the ATL for Fayetteville for lesser amounts of money tells you there was no hope for him to accomplish what needed to be done. I'm not saying Petrino was fully in the right but to dump on him and lay this all at his feet is dishonest as well. Vick turned his back on his team and gets more praise than Petrino. Many of the loud mouthed overpaid whiners on the team screwed over their team each Sunday. Clearly seeing how poorly these paid professionals are performing, I wished each of them would pack their bags and follow Petrino to Arkansas. We have too much baggage. Too many of these guys are still in love with Vick. Too many of these players have been coddled by Blank and McKay and tainted by Mora. Blank needs to stay out and McKay needs to find the pair he lost after he came from Tampa and support his coach. I'm afraid even a drill sergeant could not repair this damage.
I hope Blank figures out a way to sue his sorry ass out of about 3 years worth of Arky salary.I don't lay even most of the mess at Petrino's feet. He's clearly not responsible for most of this debacle, although he certainly didn't do anything to help right the ship. I just think there's a right way and a wrong way to quit a job, and this is a particularly gutless way to go about it.
(From the AJC)
"I feel real fortunate that we have a terrific guy leading our football team," Blank said on Monday. "Our CEO, our coach Bobby Petrino has done a terrific job dealing with adversity this year. He's proven to me that he's a better head coach than I ever thought he was going to be, dealing with the set of cards that unfolded this year." Owner Arthur Blank said he spoke to Petrino on Monday, and that Petrino assured him that he would be back for his second season with the team."
And then on Tuesday he quits by phone, doesn't meet with his team, and jumps in a plane for the Ozarks with three games left to play. Classy way to go out.
I'd say Hall was slightly bitter.Even DeAngelo Hall made a comment about it during his lambasting of Petrino.

It's pretty clear that the Falcons just didn't buy into this guy from day 1. At first I thought Petrino had lost the team, but after a stunt like this you have to wonder if he ever really had them in the first place.
