Possible USC transfer- DE Malik Jackson

Exactly. In a vacuum a top 15 class would be good. It would probably even be a pretty good class under the circumstances this year. However, it gets us no closer to winning the SEC. In fact, it gets us further away.

just ask south carolina what a #15 recruiting class does for you every year..... although we're not exactly in the best recruiting situation in the world this year

2 top 15 classes in the last 7 years.

USCjrs last 7 classes
2004- 35th
2005- 23rd
2006- 24th
2007- 6th
2008- 22nd
2009- 12th
2010- 24th

for an average of the 21st ranked class.

I know what you mean, but that probably isn't a very good comparison. Out of the last 9 recruiting classes, South Carolina has been top 15 only 4 times.

my bad, i wasn't exactly sure the exact class rankings... i just know that their on the field performance did not live up to some of their class rankings, i guess thats what makes them USCjr

Top 15 would be okay, but we really need a Top 10. I would be impressed with that. I'm also trying to figure out how we are better off in recruiting than with Kiffin for this year, yet don't expect a top 10 class. Because I definitely expected a top 10 class for 2011 with Kiffin.

Did you really have to do that to the man?

I didn't really mean like it may have came off. Just didn't want anybody to think we recruit like USCjr. 3 of our last 4 classes have been top 10 (3rd, 10th, 9th). Not counting the horrid class in '08, our star power has been pretty much on par with UF, Bama, LSU, and UGA

UT- 7th
LSU- 6th
UF- 4th
UGA- 9th
Bama- 4th

I know it really isn't fair to not count that class lolol, but still...

Being in the top 15 is a good job. If you're in the ACC. A top 15 class in the SEC simply means 5 or 6 teams in your league signed better classes. I'm not the biggest believer in the recruiting services, but they don't miss it bad enough that 6th can ever ascend to 1st.

I think this is the most accurate post Hat has posted of the 42,644 up to this point lol.

I sort of agree with this sentiment.

Phil Fulmer was getting us top 15 classes with "high character" players for the most part.

If we want to beat teams like Florida and Alabama who, arguably I guess, have better coaching staffs than we do... it only makes sense that if we don't have better players or a hell of a lot of luck.... we cannot beat them.

Bruce Pearl can beat teams with better talent than he has because he's a great coach. Fulmer had better players than UF a few times and we still lost. So, if Dooley is a great coach... we can continue to have top 15-20 classes and be okay. If he's an average coach, he better be able to pick it up a little in recruiting. That's all there is to it. But he will need at least 1 year on the football field and in the program to be able to judge both his coaching ability AND his REAL recruiting ability.... when all the cards aren't stacked against us post-Kiffin.
The fact we had the final two plays blocked (field goals) against the eventual National Champion disproves your entire post. Anyone with half a brain knows we were no where near as talented as them and darn near (should have) won the game, on their home field no less. Yes, talent matters but chemistry, effort, discipline etc. is every bit as important, that game is proof.

Yeah, I know....

But I think all he meant was if we end up as sort of "middle of the pack" in recruiting EVERY year we can't really expect to compete for championships (without great luck or terrific coaching.. which is TBA)....

To try and compare USCjr football program in any way (or any of USCjr sports sans baseball really haha) to UT is irresponsible at best. Recruiting included. UT is to USCjr as Florida is to UT.

Not according to the experts that just recently ranked D1 defensive coordinators. You just proved yourself wrong yet again, but thanks for playing. Is Monte your long lost Grandfather BTW?

Im pretty sure that monte is alot better and knowlegable than wilcox. No doubt!!

Wow.... just looked at the last few pages.

Couldn't find didley about this guy from USC and what his current status is.

I'll go look on the ... vote for your fav def coord. thread.

hah.

Is it feasible for us to get OUR guys at our NEED positions and not be in the top 15. Say we get our 5-6 OL guys, 2-3 DT's (hope 1 is GW), 2 LB's (come on AJ), 2 DE's, 2-3DB's, 2 TEs, plus some "solid" guys at positions that we are currently OK on to fill out our class. I think I would be OK regardless of what our ranking was if we got the holes filled. This is what I had a problem with last year's class. We ended up 9 (15 or so the year before) but we have huge holes on both sides of the ball that has VN and the football world talking about our below average team. I know last year's big ugly class got derailed just as it was really starting to come together, but we all know we got huge holes to fill. Hopefully Malik can help fill at least one depth hole immediately.

The part that was deleted was argument that ensued when a person lied about what they said.

Lost in the conversation about top 15 is the importance of ex ellent talent evaluation. If we avoid all of the nukeese Richardson's and get Eric Berry's and guys like Nick reveiz we will be fine

Fulmer and kiffin brought in lots of highly starred talent that did not help the team win games. Filmstrip was better at keeping some of his thugs off the blotter like t Henry but they both had struggles Dooley may well be able to avoid.

L Thompson has a demonstrated good eye for underrated players
Chaney has a good eye for qb talent and will develop it here at TN.

Looking at a rivals ranking and crying or rejoicing is pathetic. A class ranked 13 with no future arrested guys who will contribute to Hampton and who has underrated players is better than a class ranked 6 full of criminals and cromptons.

Why the knock at Crompton? I'd take a class full of Cromptons with a stable, quality coaching staff every day of the week.
