Potential Coaching Staff Members (list)

Drayton could stay. I liked Gran because he can recruit, can coach ST's, and is a proven RB's coach. I like Thompson as LB's coach. Gonzo as WR's coach. The Hughes guy from Southern Miss or Torrain Gray from VaTech as DB coach. If Bates is in, Reaves will coach WR's, so no Gonzo. I really think that the rest of the staff will be in place by next Monday. Kelly Skipper could coach WR's as well.

Steele's position was defensive HC. I don't see them replacing that. They may add another coach, but not to that position.

If it's all about money with him, I'd say we could pull Thompson unless they give him Steele's money. He only makes 210k.

I think, like it or not, that race is a factor. Look at every one of the top recruiting staffs in the country. At least 2 minority coaches are on all of them. Garner would have been one, Lake/Perry would have been one. There are plenty of candidates. If we could land Whitt Jr., then he'd be one. That definitely plays into Drayton's hands.

One... what? Dayummm, can we just say coach without having an adjective of 'color' preceeding it?

One minority coach. I hate the race argument as much as anyone, but, its a simple fact, it is a huge recruiting disadvantage to have a staff with no minority coaches. Saban, Urban, Richt, etc would beat that into every recruits head when recruiting against us.

I know you are right and I apologize for popping off.

I know. It would seem logical to hire the best coach available for each position regardless of any genetic or other outside factor, but it's not that simple.

To give an idea, of what we may be up against, if we went after Thompson. Kevin Steele left Alabama, making 360k.

Worst case scenario, if Bama give Thompson, Steele's salary.

Sounds like the 500k range again.

I agree. A good number of our recruits will be minority. If CLK releases Drayton, we will be at a disadvantage from a minority recruiting stand point. IMO,Chest-bumper or not, I feel as though we should have taken a look at Trooper, especially since we could not secure Garner from Ga.

We can land better than Trooper and alot better than Drayton.

Thompson isn't going to get Steele's salary most likely. We would offer him 350k or so to come along. Similar to what we offered Garner, maybe 400k.

Lance Thompson has only been with Saban for 4 years total. 2 at LSU, 2 at Bama.
Was a DC at Central Florida, and Saban's RC @ LSU. Seems to have coached a lot of positions in his career.

Also has a lot of time at GTech.

He has bounced around a lot. May give us a better chance to pry him away from Saban.

Our D staff would be exceptional in coaching and recruiting.

Land Thompson and Joe Whitt Jr. Set the D with that, though I think JWJr stays in the league. Maybe go after Hughes.

Monte - DC
O - DL
Thompson - LB
Hughes - DB

I would take that, this is a very solid group, Hughes is at his alma mater in Southern Miss.

Chaney - OC/OL
Cregg - TE
Gonzo - WR
Drayton/Gran - RB
Reaves - QB

Both of those groups are great, give the edge to the D.

Yeah, still think we'd have one other knockout on this list, though that would have 5-6 knockout recruiters.

HV,
You have to think he is waiting till after the NC game because he is going after Gonzales. I don't really know how good a hire that is. But he seems to be thought highly of. So.....

I think Thompson is really just pulled out of thin air. No one has ever really reported anything on it. But then again nobody reported Garner till it was happening.

What do you think about Larry Porter at LSU? Recruiter of the year a couple years ago and a very impressive list of recruits.

I don't know if we will go after Thompson. He just fits the mold of what CLK has been going after.

Porter would be a solid hire, just don't know if anything will surface there.

I don't think we necessarily need another huge one, but I think CLK may have something else up his sleeve.

Kiffin has hired a number of NFL coaches. Are will still looking at nfl coaches? Anyone think it might be from one of the teams still in the playoffs?

I think most of the offensive guys that he is looking at right now are in college. I think Monte wants guys that he has experience with or that Lane has very high words for (Orgeron). That doesn't mean it will work out that way. Lane has kept it so quiet, other than O, so who knows? Noone knew CRG was an option after we hired O until he was on a plane to Knoxville.

I read somewhere where Kiffin said that the staff should be in place by the 2nd week in January. The article went on to say that the hiring could be delayed if the coaches he was targeting were still playing. Kiffin must be a master of keeping things quiet. Usually you here about these things well before they are actually hired. I have heard very little about kiffins hires until they are actually interviewed or hired.

The coaches convention is next week. The NCG is Thursday. All but 4 teams will be out of the playoffs in the NFL. Seems to be pretty good timing by Kiffin.
