Rank Bruce Pearl as a basketball coach.

I would place him third In the SEC with Andy Kennedy as a better actual basketball coach awaiting a shot at a spot where he can recruit a little.

The ACC crew you mentioned is a herd of idiots. None should be coaching any longer. That will rectify itself soon enough.

I listed guys who disnt let the history of the program keep them from big wins, but that's how HOF guys roll. When you wanna call him elite, those are the standard.

We have to play D and execute on O. Until then, winning big games is going to haunt this team. CBP can get there, but our accepting less certainly doesn't help things.

Thanks. Sorry I am watching Ninja Assassin on Ch131 and did not see your response.

It speaks to the level of CBB coaching talent available generally that some of the best programs are being headed for millions by a "herd of idiots" as you call them.

I think Bruce Pearl is a top 20 CBB coach and for some reason people on here will not be happy until he is a top 5 or so coach. If he wins an NC here and stays around, he has the potential to be our Boeheim and end up in the HOF.

BPV and Hat,

Want to say where BP ranks in the SEC?

Where he ranks nationally?

If he is better than the coaches at NC State, Clemson and GT?
I answered, but I don't understand why you're posing this question. It's immaterial to whether our coach does what he needs to win big games.

the majority of our athletic budget goes into football... that is the facts.

The majority of our federal budget goes to military spending and entitlements, but that doesn't mean that there isn't one helluva lot of money being poured into other worthless boondoggles.

Coaches absolutely learn over time. Those who don't, fail.

buzz peterson is a good hire!! he played next to jordan.... come off it.

Bruce Pearl reached the sweet 16 at everywhere he was a coach and the Tenn Vols cant expect to reach much higher than that unless we hire Roy Williams or Bill Self out of the blue.

Utter nonsense.

"military budgets and entitlements'... well, i am in the military and i don't see that money...

I can't help myself. I always love a good boondoggle reference. Its really a great word that gets lost in translation sometimes.

While true, Pearl is getting like 1.9 mil this year and an additional half mil in a "longevity bonus." That brings this year to around 2.4 million. Thats more than Kiffin's salary.

As an outsider, Pearl appears to have the third best coaching resume in the SEC. Donovans two NC's are better, and Cal's 2 final four trips as well as a greater number of wins is better than Pearls resume as well. A coaching resume does not equal being a better coach necessarily. In some cases it can just mean that a good coach has been coaching longer than a great coach and therefore has more wins. For instance, I think Roy Williams is a better coach than Coach K even though Coach K has one more NC and about 200 more wins. As far as Pearl nationally, he seems to be running a pretty good program. Again, I haven't really seen his coaching, as I have not watched too many UT games. The coaches who seem to have better success (and thus may be better coaches) are Roy, Coach K, Self, Boeheim, Calhoun, Pitino, Izzo, Huggins, Gary Williams, Few, Howland, Donovan, Cal, Tubby. I would put Pearl in the discussion as being in the next group of coaches. Guys like Jay Wright (although I'd put Wright ahead of Pearl), Matta, Barnes, Dixon.

Do you my Vol family remember what it was like before Pearl?! Do you remember the Curtains? Do you remember when beating an SEC team was a big deal? I have been a fan fot the last 36 years and I do remember! Go Vols!
BTW we will be in the sweet sixteen this year, Book IT

Whoopi; even Pearl fan MHF says anything less than a Great8 with this team would be a disappointment.

Another thread defending Bruce.

Some people just need validation of their beliefs I guess.

Bruce needs to get over the hump when it comes to quality non conference foes...like Purdue, Texas, Ohio State, etc

I love our basketball coach overall

Honestly point me to where there is a defense.

I wanted to know if people were irrational in their hatred. So far it seems that people are not.

The consensus is that Bruce is the third best coach presently in the SEC. That is also the level where Mike Hamilton pays him. There is also some consensus at least from those who have answered my question after watching the ACC Big 10 challenge that Bruce is a better coach than the coaches at GT and Clemson and NC State. That is an admission that what people here think is not that Bruce is a terrible coach, but that he is a good coach who is not great.

It also seems like to me that people would be much happier if just like a pro style team had a wildcat package, if the Vols had some set plays in the offense that were part of a radically different look where you could call them in a matchup where you needed to stall or get a key basket people would be much happier. Bruce is not renowned by anyone as an X's and O's guy, but he is supposed to have some assistants who are great. As much as we practice and excel at frustrating teams trying to inbound the ball, it seems like perhaps we could get better at running a few key set plays.

I sat through Houston, O'Neill and Peterson...

Beating an SEC team was not a big deal during the Jerry Green era. Green never fit in here and insulted our fans and the AD (who he may have been right in saying did not care too much about men's bb) but he got lots of SEC wins.

Bruce Pearl has 4 seniors including 2 of the 4 most talented players he has had in his tenure here. It depends on matchups of course and seeding, but anything less than an Elite 8 will be a disappointment this year. Next year even with T Harris we will probably not advance as far although it is too early to say what that team will look like. This year is Bruce's best team in terms of maturity and being physically able to beat every team on the schedule except possibly Kansas if they give maximum effort.

It seems to me that people are more concerned with results, or lack thereof when it counts, than the style of play.
