It seems to me that people are more concerned with results, or lack thereof when it counts, than the style of play.
This is where I think we are in some agreement. I am saying we need to get to the Elite 8 this year or I will be disappointed. You are saying we need to get to the Elite 8 (or Final Four?) before you will say that Bruce Pearl can overcome his deficiencies in halfcourt offense and defensive coaching and convince you he can take the Vols as far as you want them to go.
Am I summing up your position correctly?
For instance, if McBee and Hopson went 13-17 from beyond the arc and UT shot its way past Syracuse into the Final Four, would you be happy with Bruce or would you be mad about our 24 turnovers and the fact that the game was so close and was only won by hot shooting? To me it seems that the same things that bug you about his coaching now will bug you even if he wins a National Championship. You may be even more frustrated, because you will see how if we valued the ball more, played better defense etc we would win by so much more in games we win due to incredible shooting.
Great shooting or poor opponent shooting as the tourney deepens and teams get better is rarely just happenstance. Teams do get lucky, but not over and over.
.... In this sense, getting to be #1 is not important, but losing it is. It also means that being more successful than any other coach at UT is not important, but not equaling the success of an elite program (after 4 years) is important.... .
A game that we should have won but as typical of a Pearl coached tourney team we chocked in the clutch and made the same mistakes as we do year end and year out.
Those of you defending Pearl aren't understanding the anti-Pearl crowd. They are about doing two things:
1. Creating a standard just beyond what has been reached in order to maintain their criticism.
2. Identifying failures as a standard as opposed to the successes.
In this sense, getting to be #1 is not important, but losing it is. It also means that being more successful than any other coach at UT is not important, but not equaling the success of an elite program (after 4 years) is important.
All that happens here is, again, a creation of goals and performance standards that guarantee a conclusion that Pearl is failing to meet with minimum expectations they arbitrarily create. It has nothing to do with being "realistic" or "constructive criticism", it's merely a slavish following of hat and his petty personal agenda because they think he is some kind of basketball Yoda.
As of now, we are 6-1 and the #11 team in the nation with one loss by a point to the #4 team in the country. If this is not good enough, at this point, then you suck as a fan, to put it bluntly. This isn't to say you have to be satisfied with this, but you should be happy at this stage. Otherwise, you are just showing your pitiful agenda.
Hey, you need to lay off. Bruce Pearl is better than Buzz Peterson. That's all that matters. The fact we're paying him Jim Calhoun money to be Mark Turgeon doesn't mean anything.Arbitrary standards for elite coaches. Thad funny as hell.
Say something that idiotic then pretend your standards for happiness (vs satisfaction as you so clearly stated) aren't meaningless in the college basketball realm and therefore arbitrary. That's a weet effort to shift the shift the argument and probably works on your fellow slurpers, but there aren't any fans outside (presumably objective and knowledgeable) our program who would do anything but laugh at you.
The fact we're paying him Jim Calhoun money to be Mark Turgeon doesn't mean anything.
Does that mean that you base your expectations on what the coach makes?
Pro-Pearl people seem to keep arguing that Pearl is good bc his predecessor was worse. Anti-Pearl people seem to keep arguing that Pearl is underachieving as a coach bc he makes a comparable amount to coaches who have done more. Are these essentially the arguments of each side?
No to which part? I asked more than one question.
I appreciate that you replied. But I don't understand why I can't get the Pearl Haters to explain their reasoning to me. I am not a pearl lover or hater. I'm just here to discuss college basketball, and instead I find that all these Vol fans seem to hate their coach and each other. I guess I'm at the wrong link to see the reasoning behind why people don't like Pearl, or do like Pearl, because people are really just insulting people here. If anyone would explain their reasoning, I would love to hear it. If there is a different link I should be at for this discussion, then point the way and I'll go there to discuss it instead. Thanks.
Unfortunately, you are right about this forum. I have asked for real reasons for the hate, but have mostly just received insults. I think these guys have a personal problem with Pearl. They seem to be masking their hatred of him behind the criticism of a few perceived shortcomings (so far) of Pearl. I am not buying, nor do most sensible Vol fans.
I don't mind defending my team, but this has grown old for me. There are other places to go for information. It gets old sifting through the propaganda to get to real information. So, I am sure I will come here occasionally, at least in the hopes that things will eventually get cleaned up here, but I will just say: keep up the good works Hamilton. I'm out. You guys can get your digs in on me now...:hi:
The reasons people hate Pearl have been laid out in the negative thread.
The reasons people love Pearl have also been laid out.
It is a bit exhausting.
Hatvol will rarely make real predictions because he hates being wrong. He just said everyone on our OOC sucks besides Memphis and Kansas and I said Charlotte was good and now today he is pretending like he never said that.
I predicted 5 SEC teams to the NCAAs and was attacked by most of the Pearl haters on here as being a guy who knows nothing about basketball. The best is the people who felt like they were knowledgeable who said Florida sucks and they cannot make the tournament.
Now they are still unable to admit they were way off. They are hoping that Boynton breaks his leg or something.

Go get your info elsewhere if you'd like. I like Pearl and want him to win. That said, I don't believe he's a great basketball coach.
I bet Lutz is thrilled to find out his team is good. That'll be consolation for him when they finish 6th or 7th in the A-10. I bet he's just hoping his team is as good as Arizona. You know that very few hate Pearl. You also just penned a ridiculous reply. Let the man read and he'll see that this was total trash.
Have you seen the MSU team upon which you're basing all of this UF love play. They look awful right now and UF still needed the refs to beat them. I'll hazard a guess: you didn't see even a second of that game?
