I think Pearl is a good, not great, coach who has brought UT as far as he can. I don't think he will take us to the next level unless he undergoes a big philosophical change in the key areas that many people have already mentioned and continually mention. We'll be a top 20-25 program as long as he is around, and might finally crack the 16 barrier, but I doubt it.
It's really a catch-22. You have to be thankful for what he has done, but it's growing increasingly frustrating seeing how close the team is from taking that next step while watching the same mistakes over and over that keep them from making it.
Yeah, that sounds just like the people shredding everything you say.I forgot when I listed the reasons people may not like Bruce that he is so boorish seeming to many. Painting your chest made some fans say "wow he is strong" or "nice move to get on ESPN" or "funny and harmless" but it made some people tsk tsk until their dentures needed more Polident.
Bruce Pearl screaming "We will kick Florida's ASS" did not make him friends with some of the wealthiest boosters. These are people who did not like O'Neill's language, Green's lack of player discipline etc. They did not like Trooper Taylor and the backwards hat and the chest bumping and it is not because they are racist, they are kind of classist I suppose. They want a coach who has style and grace and dignity and who they feel would be comfortable on their golf course. They do not understand that the type of individual they will get then will have trouble bringing in the type of players who will give them success. I think this group had their favorite coach in Buzz Peterson.
my reasons....
i loved CBP for 3 years. in the beginning, the excitement and enthusiasm he brought to the program with his actions and words... and the results on the court (which we hadn't seen in years) had me completely sold on the Bruce Pearl Phenomenon.
my tune started changing as i watched Lofton's and JaJuan's senior year dwindle down to an unmotivated, pathetically awful offensive team (cuz Lofton couldn't bail them out anymore with insane hot streaks from 3) and a significant drop in pressure D efficiency.
i'm not 100% sold on CBP like i was... mainly because of what others have already said... and what i've complained about numerous times already in my 20-some posts.
he's got great energy and brings attention to the UT program and so far seems to be a good enough recruiter... although i think the jury is still out on that.
BUT i need to see more coaching... i want to see our team get BETTER from the start of a season to the end... and with the same players returning... i don't want to see them make the same mistakes over and over. i want to see some kind of halfcourt offense.... OMG PLEASE!!!! i want to see SOMEONE keep their head about them when the game is on the line in the last 2 minutes. i don't want to see our point guard dribble down the court and try to throw up an out of control layup over a shot blocking 7 footer when we have one of the most clutch 3 point shooters in CBB (who has seemingly unlimited range).... and i don't want tyler or wayne taking ANYMORE 3's to try to win a game for us.
after watching CBP in his 5th season now... this much is obvious to me:
what worked to make him a legend and Southern Indiana and UWM.... WILL NOT give him the same success when competing against the very best coaches and elite programs in D1 CBB.
i want to add another thing i remember about last year.
i heard CBP say at least 2 or 3 times... if not 10... how "this team just won't play Defense like he wants... we can't press cuz these guys just won't or can't do it." anyone remember that?
i just wanna say.... WHAT THE F*** KINDA THINKING IS THAT??
does anyone here think... bobby knight, coach K, or dean, or bill self would ever say such a ridiculously stupid thing about a team THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR?
OMG.... if i'm coaching those guys (kids i recruited to play in my system i remind you)... and they don't wanna play how i wanna play.... i don't give a F if they're all projected 1st round picks... i'll have all their butts right next to me on the pine or write up their transfer papers. i'm never thinking, saying, or giving in to the idea that the kids i recruited "just won't play the kinda basketball i say we're gonna play." i couldn't believe i heard him say that ONCE... let alone on multiple occasions.
i dunno... that might all sound a little gene hackman in hoosiers... but really... u think bobby knight or coach K are coming on the radio and saying... "well my guys just won't play my system".
i want CBP to succeed... i like his passion and it seems like his players view him as a positive, father figure type coach, and that kinda stuff is important IMO. but there's just a couple major areas he really needs to improve on as a coach to have our teams in real contention for Nat Champs come march.... on a consistent basis. thats what makes an elite program. we haven't been a real threat come march since he's been here... and with everyone back... this is a BIG YEAR to see what CBP is made of.
Tennessee can do better than top 20-25. If we made a hire now, we may do worse, but we could also do better.Pearl is the best we can get being a football school and our area community support. Great coach. he is a top 20-25 coach. For a better program, we need someone 'from "la familia", with Big East connections. Pitino-Providence, Coach Cal- UMass,.
