Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Kyle Olson was the referee last night. He officiated the SEC championship game and our Uconn game last season. I looked at the UConn game thread last night and we were fussing about missed holding calls all through it. His crew seems to call ball games one way only.

*we need a thread or spreadsheet of referees and what games they call, like KY has for basketball.

*In the past, I'd take a picture of the referee, get as many names as possible, and document them in the game threads. I've not done that this year because I've been watching with my family. I'll start adding them again (sometime during/after the game) for future references.
I normally mention bad/missed calls, but don't really cry about them extensively. I hate it most in games like this because if they make just 1 or 2 of those missed calls, we get an extra possession or 2. That is massive in a 5pt game. If they threw that PI against Bru, who knows what would've happened.

Also didn't seem to help that we were shooting ourselves in both feet at the same time too. I think there is a good chance we win if we just eliminate the self-inflicted penalties, regardless of the other missed calls. . . we would definitely have a much better chance if we would just stop with false starts, etc.

Did anyone notice if we changed strategies to start the 3rd qtr and then just stopped doing what worked? Seemed strange that we came to life in the 3rd and then went right back to sleep.

My final thoughts on it. . . if we're gonna lose, let's lose going 100,000 mph and trying to land haymakers instead of playing the game the opponent wants and staying away from what we already know we're good at doing. Maybe that's what coach was trying to do, but we just had a horrible night.

Anyone else contemplated cease watching Tenn football just for the reason of how it makes you feel when we lose these types of games?

Hate to admit it but it just guts me after a loss, especially when it’s a team you should have won! Everyone including me become totally irrational.

GO VOLS

It is absolutely laughable how so many of you think winning an SEC road game is easy and we should be able to do it in our sleep. We played awful. No way to spin it. I am in a little bit of wait and see but the fact that many of you are already writing off Nico and Heupel is just plain stupid.
My doubt is growing for sure. Haven’t written them off but this UF game will be very telling. I honestly expect a loss but obviously that’s why you play the game. I think Nico is talented but appears to have stage fright right now. Maybe rightfully so with the putrid OL that is supposed to be “blocking” for him. They are both gonna have to figure it out quick. The fanbase either loves you or hates you. I think the OU game and the “we dialed it back for you Nico” was pure coach speech because Heup knows he is hamstrung in a big way offensively. They are going to continue seeing the 3-3-5s and 3-2-6s thrown at them until they can prove they can adjust and are talented enough to do so. And until they are able this fanbase is going to grow more irritable whether right or wrong. To have the deepest, most talented team you’ve had since you’ve been here and to put up 2 b2b games offensively like that is telling to say the least. No more coach speak. No more canned, rehearsed answers. You’re either good or you’re not. Right now. We. Are. Not. And that is concerning given the roster.

They go over that scenario in practice when they practice end of the game scenarios. Nico knows that he only has time for a quick pass to the sideline if we are going for the field goal or a throw into the end zone. The kid screwed up.
Yes, but so did the coaches, the o line and the receivers. It was bad football.

Are we sure there is lack of development at WR? We can see the OL whiff on a block during the game but unless you have a different view than the camera angle how can one say the WRs haven’t developed? Nobody can honestly say they’re not open bc we can’t see it.

Although last year the WR corps did have a case of the dropsies.
They struggle to get separation unless it's schemed. They don't win enough one on one battles with any consistency.

Thank you, I hope the TBI and DA agree.
Based on that video, he made the right call. He clearly gave many opportunities to surrender. It also seemed like the guy may have wanted to be shot and forced your son's hand after he gave him every opportunity to drop the gun.

I just hope your son gets the right counseling and support from the people around him. The last thing I'd want is for him to be questioning himself if a situation like that happens again.

This crew did the Arkansas game.
OH I thought you meant for next week.

I didn't think they were awful. Quite a few missed holds, but pretty average home field advantage overall. I really think garner needs to teach our guys to sell the hold, we never get them in any game, and it's unlikely every single crew every year is actively trying to sabotage us.

We haven’t recruited well enough at oline before last years class. That’s just the facts unfortunately. It’s known our OL coach isn’t exactly a stellar recruiter.

If we had Golesh we would still be where we are right now? Is he going to magically make the oline better? Is he gonna force CJH to trust the QB more? I seriously doubt it.
Not sure, but he was much smoother with play calls and using a formation and look to set the next play up..... That's been missing since he left.

I'm sure the players and skill have something to do with that, remember Hyatt wasn't a very good player until that senior year. I think it's a mistake to overlook Golesh's hand in that.

Wasn't our OL much better that year? And hooker was obviously a seasoned veteran. I think it's more likely those factors helped.

We had great play calling the first 3 games when Nico was in. Didn't even try most of those plays against arky and OU. We went to ultra base offense. I couldn't tell much of a difference between 2nd half of Kent state when backups were in vs play calls at arky.

For years I was able to not take the ineptitude and incompetence of our athletic department and let it get to me.

Back when I was in college, med school and residency, I lived and died by Tennessee Football. As a gift to myself for graduating from med school, I got season tickets. I went to almost every home game.

When I got married, we moved to Knoxville and I not only got to keep my season tickets , I was able to upgrade to better seats.

When we moved back to Texas, I gave up my season tickets. The buffoonery that was our next 15 years allowed me to quit taking every loss so personally. It didn’t hurt that I also had two children 😊

Well, then Tennessee hired Danny White who has completely transformed this athletic department into a phenomenal place. Coach Josh Heupel, Coach Rick Barnes, and Coach Tony Vitello have made me care about every single minute of every single game.

Last night I kept dreaming about the arkansas game. I replayed it both awake and asleep. I came to the conclusion that things could have gone differently with just a few changes. But it’s always easier to look back and see the right path.

I bleed Pantone 151. I can’t be any other way.

I also can’t throw our coaches and players under the bus for a loss. I can’t turn against them anymore than I could quit being a Vol For Life.

It’s time for all of us to Give our all for Tennessee today and every other day from here to eternity.

15-1 🤠
And
Next year
16-0 🤠

Go Vols!
Vamos Vols!
Go Big Orange!
It’s Great to be a Tennessee Volunteer!

Oh, and I don’t give a damn about the whole state of arkansas or alabama or florida or kentucky or missiissippi or georgia!

Sure wasn't. But Saban didn't apologize. He excused his player's striking the woman entirely. Said his football player was afraid of the coed. Yes, he did. As far as his player also hitting the male fan earlier, I think neither Saban nor the media cared enough to even talk about it.
I meant Saban apologized to his own player, cus he got scared.

Yes the o line was better, and Hooker had some experience but not much success at any stop before. He comes to the right system with the right coaching and he was great. How much if that was him and how much was coaching/play calling?

Nico isn't being trusted and he's not finding a rhythm and developing. It feels like he's being held back.......or maybe just protected. I'm not going to second guess Heupel but it seems like he needs to let him loose and make mistakes, learn what he can and can't do.

Ya know what helps beat these 3-3-5 & 3-2-6 defenses?

Running our tempo & snapping the ball before they get a chance to get setup. The OL sitting in stance for 15-20 seconds every play is leading to more false starts and late reactions to DL pressure. When we’re controlling the snap they get set & then explode off the line.

Agreed 100%

Not understanding the pacing issues

Hooker had thrown for 2800 yards before coming to UT. It was obviously a great combination with him and Heupel, but that first game he played at UT made me nervous behind center. But he was a 4th year player in 2021.

While the game was disappointing, it’s still Nico’s 6th game. I knew we were going to have a few tight games where plays need to be made, and he’s still learning.

Trust your eyes?

Curious as to what it is you think you saw? Defenders ran around Heard like he was standing still… like he hardly laid hands on them.
Both tackles struggled especially in the 1st half. Played better in the 2nd half but Heard hasn't been worth the big price tag through 3 games so far.

But you have also seen Davis for 3 years too and he is not a starting caliber SEC lineman unfortunately. It's clear and obvious versus any dline thats at least average. Same for Ollie Lane last year.

Thank you Enki, we are a very tight knit family and we are all hurting for him. I am confident the did the right thing, but man this is hard. He is such a good kid.
