I will probably change my mind in August, and I did enjoy the experience with my son. But I had thoughts that I won’t spend the money again for a game until something changes. It’s just not fair to our kids because our program has changed in 11 months.

But the Music City Bowl should be embarrassed by several things yesterday, and the officiating was one. Yet they had an attendance record, so I doubt they care.
the condition the field was in...at an NFL stadium mind you...was abhorrent.

I sincerely question whether Heupel is the guy - whether his schemes will work in the sec, long run.

I don’t want to be a Debbie downer but all we really did this year was catch a lot of people off guard and beat up on bad teams.

I’m far less optimistic about year two today than I was just a few days ago.

This has been an issue with the oiler stadium since inception due to the several factors: 1) grass doesn't get enough sun due to the layout; 2) poor drainage and 3) sodded with a type of bermuda grass which needs sun (see first point). Turf is OK until cold weather hits and starts to kill the grass. They have had to paint the turf green for late oiler playoff games.

One bowl game doesn’t change our season. We are severely limited on defense and on the OL. Solon Page, Ollie Lane, Dwayne Davis, Crawford all had to play significant snaps at some point. It’s frightening yet went 7-6. Kind of a miracle to me. Also, Hooker is good, but if we could get an elite QB, this offense will roll. These coaches actually scheme and develop.

I know it seemed like they had a bunch of 6-8 yard runs, they had 93 rushing yards on 33 attempts in a game where they had 627 total yards. It was the pass rush and secondary that were bigger problems.
I went back and calculated it up and Purdue ran for 78 yds averaging 4.6 yards per carry in the first half…. It appears we adjusted but that is usually at the expense of another part of the defense …. Probably pass defense.

I mean, the teams we beat weren't total scrubs. South Carolina and Mizzou made bowl games. Kentucky was decent. We should have beaten Pitt, Ole Miss, and Purdue had weird officiating ****ery not occurred.

We were supposed to be terrible and instead we came out with an explosive offense. I doubt Heupel is the next Saban but he's exactly what we needed, given where our program was when he was hired. A guy who can scheme up points was probably the only way this program was going to regain any semblance of competitiveness. And he did it year one.

It’s way too early to tell….. feasting on poor teams is half the battle……. My favorite quote of the night was about Josh Heupel s first practice at Tennessee….Josh looked at our team and told one of the assistant coaches…. OMG…. How are we going to make this work?

Regardless of the Science behind sod and turf...if Maryville HS can field a safer surface than an NFL franchise...all I have to say is this...

CFB is almost on the verge of being unwatchable due to officiating and the flopping. Have to have major reform on both.

Aside from those two things, the team fought hard even though they didn’t play their best, especially on D. Our O has a ton of potential. Small is serviceable but we need a stud RB. Losing Evans hurts. Hopefully J. Williams is a stud.

Our D…. I think we may be worse next year (if we don’t get any major portal players). We need a whole new secondary I’m afraid along with some stud LBs. Our portal focus should be almost all D players. Need all the help we can get. I’m in a quandary on how I feel about Banks. He leaves a lot to be desired in a DC but we also have an intramural talent level D so he probably gets a pass at the moment.

Future could be promising but it hinges on how our D progresses. I was skeptical about Heupel when hired but I’ve grown to like him. Love our O when we’re clicking. Opportunity is definitely there for us to get back to national relevance.

I’m still all in with Heup in case anyone was wondering. This garbage game will have no impact on our momentum

I am 110% in with this Coach Hype. Look what he did with a rag tag team in one year. I don't think it hurts our recruiting a bit. In fact I think it may have helped cause they saw a team that didn't give up and got ripped off. GBO!!

Heupel’s gotta fix his in game coaching gaffes. I’m all in as well. But end of 4th quarter was bad. Really bad. Not to mention continuing to go to OT with multiple timeouts

Exactly. It is OK to state the obvious that anybody can rewind the video and see if they missed it when it happened. That was clearly the time to win the game and he messed it up. It happens. He's a 4th year HC still calling his own offensive plays, which detracted from his ability to make HC decisions at times in that game and throughout the season. I get why he does it early in this rebuild. But at some point he needs to hand it over to his OC and just give input when needed. Kiffin has messed things up often for the same reason, but got bailed out by Corral and SEC officials. We do not get the same benefits.

It also proves why bowl games with 7-5 teams really don't mean much. It did expose the corruption of ACC officiating team just like the Ole Miss game exposed the corruption of an SEC officiating team. The team got some more practice in and an exhibition against a decent Big Ten team. May have pizzed them off enough as players and staff to get busy and fix things.

Get the D coaches some talent to work with from the portal and see what they can do. I would give Willie the side eye except I know the guys that coached them before he has couldn't do anything with them either.

I'm mostly over the loss this morning but I still hate the way that last possession was managed before OT. I admired the balls to go for the TD the first time, but why try again? Just get in FG range. And why wasn't a timeout called after the run play? We let 15 seconds bleed off the clock.

Any time you put up 35-45 points in a game, you should win. His offense has worked every stop he has been at. But if you have your Defense that is giving up 45-50 then how can that be on the offense? Put a defense with this offense and you might change your mind. But the 2nd qt has been the problem all year with this offense. They can put 21 points up in the 1st qt with ease but disappear in the 2nd qt. Garner is the best coach on defense and the rest are not very good at all

I think it's more about the Jimmy's and Joe's and less about the X's and O's. We need some difference makers on all 3 levels of defense that we just don't have right now. Offensively, we still need a piece or two....at OL and WR.

Ive thought this as well. He needs to make adjustments to it. Right now the scheme really is run something short up the middle then try and hurry up and catch a mis aligned defense.
Also another thing they talked about yesterday was how he tries to get the offense off the field in 9 plays or less because of their conditioning. Thats a problem too sometimes you have to grind out 14 play drives. Im hoping its just a depth thing, but with how he ran his offense at UCF im not so sure.
Another thing the announcers talked about, they said the coaches told them that we run the ball up the middle so much so the O lineman are close to the ball and so they can get set quickly. Thats not gonna work either. If teams are giving numbers you have to run counter, outside zone etc.
This isnt a fire Heupel post at all, I think he needs 5 years regardless of what happens. Just some observations through last night and throughout the year. Im hoping some of this stuff was just depth related but im not so sure it is. Heupel has some growing to do if he is going to be the one that gets us where we want to be.
Again this isnt a fire Heupel post just some observations.
