On the last possession of regulation, we were trying to get a TD or a 15-yard penalty (to get into FG range) on those two long pass plays. We knew that we were going to beat them long or they would have to commit interference to prevent the score. The refs had been flag happy all game for DPI, it had been reinforced all game that if you throw it up, it's gonna be a flag or a big play. Purdue actually did commit holding/DPI but the refs didn't throw the flag.

We were trying to be too smart and put the game in the refs' hands. It wasn't a bad play call. It should have been flagged. If they wouldn't have held we would have scored. But for whatever reason the refs weren't going to throw the flag. Maybe it was to let the teams play it out?

Well letting them play it out flew right out the damn window in overtime but whatever.

Point is - we had three timeouts and enough time to run whatever we wanted to get in FG range. We should have just been methodical and got into FG range the old fashioned way instead of saying "well, hey, if they like throwing flags, let's let 'em throw some flags."

Easier to say in hindsight because it absolutely was a penalty on at least one of our long passes to end the game. But we'll never know why a penalty wasn't called and we'll never know why the ref was so eager to blow the play dead in OT.

Wish someone had a video of all the blown PI calls last night. Clearly remember seeing a lot on purdue that wasn't called including Hyatts TD. Also heard Bob on the radio commenting they were holding Tillman nearly every play in the 1st half

What makes it so egregious is that you rarely ever see the "top teams" get screwed over by bad officiating. You can watch a Bama or Georgia game and see multiple penalties go uncalled, yet let it be Tennessee or some other "lesser team" and the refs get whistle happy, blowing bad calls left and right. It's just ridiculous IMO.
Bama and Georgia defensive backs play like we did last night all the time and never get called for it. Watch them play today and see if I am not right.

We couldn't generate any pass rush because of their o-line holding/tackling our players every play. It was so obvious my wife was yelling at the TV and she knows very little about football.

If Alabama were running the hurry-up, and opponents kept faking injuries on them, there would 100% be a rule change that very next offseason.

Let's see what happens, but I'm not planning on us getting a rule change. Our games may be unwatchable next year as every coach that we play will put the fainting defenders plan into action.

Refs wouldn't dare blow a play dead on Saban or give away multiple DPI on his defense. It just does not happen.

With Mitchell likely coming back now we need to only go after db’s in the portal tbh…we need to completely overhaul our secondary

So just fire him huh. The defense struggling has nothing to do with this thin roster that he inherited? Shoot let’s just fire everyone and start all over again. SMH
Tim Banks is a weak link.

Fant's effort on this play is embarrassing and he should be disciplined for it.
Fant did what he was suppose to, chip the DE off and hit the LB.
Problem was ilb came from the left side and caught Wright in the backfield allowing the DE to get back in on the play. Had ilb not gotten through the line with ease, it would have been a walk-in TD.

I sincerely question whether Heupel is the guy - whether his schemes will work in the sec, long run.

I don’t want to be a Debbie downer but all we really did this year was catch a lot of people off guard and beat up on bad teams.

I’m far less optimistic about year two today than I was just a few days ago.
Well at least you are in good company with your take.

Fant's effort is pitiful

Ive thought this as well. He needs to make adjustments to it. Right now the scheme really is run something short up the middle then try and hurry up and catch a mis aligned defense.
Also another thing they talked about yesterday was how he tries to get the offense off the field in 9 plays or less because of their conditioning. Thats a problem too sometimes you have to grind out 14 play drives. Im hoping its just a depth thing, but with how he ran his offense at UCF im not so sure.
Another thing the announcers talked about, they said the coaches told them that we run the ball up the middle so much so the O lineman are close to the ball and so they can get set quickly. Thats not gonna work either. If teams are giving numbers you have to run counter, outside zone etc.
This isnt a fire Heupel post at all, I think he needs 5 years regardless of what happens. Just some observations through last night and throughout the year. Im hoping some of this stuff was just depth related but im not so sure it is. Heupel has some growing to do if he is going to be the one that gets us where we want to be.
Again this isnt a fire Heupel post just some observations.
Hard for me to complain about the offense given the success we’ve had this year, but I do think it may need a little tweaking going forward. It’s nice to score in 2 plays but go ahead and figure on the other team coming back on a 8-10 play scoring drive and our defense being just as gassed as theirs is. Not going to go back and look but I think I could count on one, maybe two hands of how many 10+ play scoring drives we’ve had this year. That’s really not complementary football. Long term, I’m not sure that’s going to work against the better teams in this league who are two and three deep with talented SEC players.
