Disappointing end to a good season. It is what it is.
All of this has been said 100000 times, but:
- I hope Justin Williams is a stud. We 100% should have seen Whitehead last night. Bigger back was needed.
- The defense is garbage, we have a couple of pieces, but that’s it. After last night, I think we need a transfer at every level on Defense. Hopefully we see Charles, Turnage, Mohan play more next year.
- Need another OL (unless Cade comes back), DT, Edge, ILB, CB, S, and WR
This! Now can this staff recruit well enough to get us to an elite level? TBD. I believe worse case Heup and staff string together some 7 and 8 wins seasons. Perhaps an off year 5 or 6 win season (injuries). Puts us in a much better place to go coach hunting in 2025 or so, if need be.Anybody calling for coaches to be fired need to have their head examined. It’s like we don’t even try to learn from history anymore.
This entire staff is more than capable, we just need more horses.
Dont fire everybody on D. I want to keep Garner. Willie can be replaced this morning and it will be a upgrade. I might be a little hard on Banks but I thought from day 1 that he was a bad hire but he had nothing to work with but if he follows next year up with these same results then he should be firedView attachment 424826
So just fire him huh. The defense struggling has nothing to do with this thin roster that he inherited? Shoot let’s just fire everyone and start all over again. SMH
I think it’s fair to wonder, but I’m confident in this staff to continue the positive momentum. They exceeded what I believed they could do in recruiting, so I’m willing to be patient.I sincerely question whether Heupel is the guy - whether his schemes will work in the sec, long run.
I don’t want to be a Debbie downer but all we really did this year was catch a lot of people off guard and beat up on bad teams.
I’m far less optimistic about year two today than I was just a few days ago.
Biggest gripe with this staff is seemingly refusing to play underclassmen that are more talented. Tank needs to be benched and Slaughter or Charles take his spot. Turnage should be playing over Burrell. Why haven’t we seen Willis or Mohan more? We have one linebacker. Play the young guys and see what they can bring. It seems they trust the older players more but they lack athleticism and play among ability of the younger players. It was obvious the talent gap on defense. Also, RT is terrible. Get another transfer on top of mincey.
But every game was fun this year and this team fights for each other. They don’t give up ever. That’s culture and will be huge for the future. Even with how bad our defense played at times and the missed Tds, we should have won. Props to the coaches. We have a bright future.
Let’s at least allow these coaches on defense recruit the players they need before we burn them at the stakeDont fire everybody on D. I want to keep Garner. Willie can be replaced this morning and it will be a upgrade. I might be a little hard on Banks but I thought from day 1 that he was a bad hire but he had nothing to work with but if he follows next year up with these same results then he should be fired
They do run it up the middle a lot and run it well….. look up the counters that ran at UCF…. Some of those designs were pretty impressive…… I’m sure he probably doesn’t have the talent to run his entire package yet.Ive thought this as well. He needs to make adjustments to it. Right now the scheme really is run something short up the middle then try and hurry up and catch a mis aligned defense.
Also another thing they talked about yesterday was how he tries to get the offense off the field in 9 plays or less because of their conditioning. Thats a problem too sometimes you have to grind out 14 play drives. Im hoping its just a depth thing, but with how he ran his offense at UCF im not so sure.
Another thing the announcers talked about, they said the coaches told them that we run the ball up the middle so much so the O lineman are close to the ball and so they can get set quickly. Thats not gonna work either. If teams are giving numbers you have to run counter, outside zone etc.
This isnt a fire Heupel post at all, I think he needs 5 years regardless of what happens. Just some observations through last night and throughout the year. Im hoping some of this stuff was just depth related but im not so sure it is. Heupel has some growing to do if he is going to be the one that gets us where we want to be.
Again this isnt a fire Heupel post just some observations.
