With the talent he had to work with...he should have put the some of the best defenses in the history of CFB out there.

He sucked at scheme...Spurrier schemed circles around him.
There isn’t anyone Spurrier didn’t scheme circles around, at some point or another. Over his career at Tennessee he had 10 defenses that finished top 25 in total defense. 4 finished inside the top 10. He was considered one of the top coordinators in college football for two decades.

We need a movement:

Danny White’s email address is athleticdirector@utk.edu. Please consider sending him a nice and professional email sharing your displeasure of the college football product/officiating. If he gets flooded, I wonder if something public would be said.

Especially for those who spent good money for season tickets, the Pitt, Ole Miss, or the bowl game. You can even share a personal story that the product could effect decisions about future games.

I hate having to complain to our own, but complaining to any other entity will be futile. Danny needs to know how we feel.

They need to really look at the rules in Football period. You could call a penalty on every play. OL hold on every play. DB and WR hand fight and push off on every play . That is how they are coached. EVERY kick off or punt play somebody holds or blocks in the back. Refs just are kind of window dressing. They can miss a call that hurts team A, then 3-4 plays later call a "make-up" call that hurts team B just as bad. And no I have no answer so I'll just shut up and watch.........like always........and bit@h......like always....What it is, It was FOOTBALL.

I love me some Josh Heupel after being very "meh" about the initial hire, but one thing which does concern me is can we keep this level of offensive performance up? We all know what needs to be done on defense -- we need the guys. We don't have them yet. But I worry about Heupel suffering from the same thing which got Chip Kelly and Gus, which is that eventually people figure your scheme out and make it a lot harder on you.

This coming season, if we are going to continue to rise, we need to keep South Carolina and Mizzou in the rearview mirror. Kentucky will be a battle again. We need to show something more against Florida. We haven't gotten closer than 12 points since 2017. I still think when it all shakes out we probably win 7 again. I hope I'm wrong -- I was certainly wrong about how this year would go.
I doubt we have as good of an offense next year. Seems as if we have one of the best offensive coaches in the game, but some of the best defensive coaches in the game reside in this league as well. They’ll adjust to this offense, and Heupel will have to as well.

Why are you always such a negative sad sack? Seriously, are you even a Vol fan, or just a troll fan of another team?

On our way to “two hand touch”
The whole point was to protect guys so defenders wouldn't pile on and jump on guys when he was clearly stopped by a hoarde of defenders...

This was an RB FIGHTING FOR HIS TEAM on a GAME WINNING TD and NOBODY was piling on him. Absolute 100% garbage.

Plan B.

Get sensor/AI based refs asap.

Full time refs don't fix the problem - which is that humans are not suited for this kind of work. Never have, never will be. Not at the low levels, not at the highest. Ask those Saints fans 😅
How in the actual hell does that work? There is no f'n system. What we need is professional unbiased officials with integrity. I believe there were at least two guys on that crew that made a ton of money from Vegas.

I DO NOT CARE...those defenses should have been legendary...not just really good...especially 98 and 2001.

I was never a Chavis fan.

It must be nice to have a team whose defense even in a “down year” is still this good. I am confident Heupel is an offensive genius after this season. If we can ever get a defense that’s even close to “down year” Alabama we might win an SEC championship.
Agreed.

And defense begins and ends with recruiting. Analytic guys like Bill C. even have a multiplier effect for defensive guys, because of what research shows how important their raw talent is (more than ofgensive guys). A great scheme always helps, but it just isn't like offense where you can control things in a major way via your scheme.

I have faith Gardner and the rest will bring in better guys, but we have to start landing some major studs to really compete vs the elite offenses of the modern era. The 2023 class will tell us a ton and it's either going to be a big positive or not. We might spin our wheels until we can land a major primetime win or 2. And I'm ok with that too. I'd have no problem giving Hype 6 years at this point. We don't even need linear progress (which is a myth), just avoid a huge/fireable down year like Stoops has done at UK...and I believe the fanbase will give him time to really build what he wants.

This is going to have to be done the old school way. There's no easy solution. Build, recruit, get a veteran squad together that can put us over the top by year 4/5 and hope that propels our recruiting up a level like Clemson did.

Not being negative. Just calling things for what they are. You can be a Vol and not have to pretend like everything with the program is golden.

There’s no proof though that defensive coaches can adjust. Maybe a game or two here or there. But he’s literally had top offenses every year he’s been a head coach.

The real answer is both. Make the refs full time and bring in more technology. As much as I don’t want to slow the game down, there shouldn’t much in the game that’s not challengeable. There also needs to be a review referee for every game. They are in the stadium up in the booth and serve as another part of the referee team. They have reviews, AI tools, etc to help them up top and can call down if an event is triggered. That way you have a designated person on the team that can provide input. You know the times when the refs huddle up to all give their input on what they think they saw or on what happened before they make a call? Let the review official also be a part of that and he had the benefit of seeing it from a completely different, and better, angle.

Also, why the refs, or at least the head ref doesn’t have his mic turned on during reviews and discussions is beyond me. Look at how rugby refs operate and how you can hear everything they are saying during a match, including when they are talking to the review booth.. it brings so much more transparency and clarity. There are definitely times you don’t want the mic on, like when the refs are getting cussed out by coaches, but having them on in moments like the end of last night would be so much better for the game.
