You're painting a very dismal picture where Tennessee doesn't seem to want to compete. If that's the case, our program is in serious trouble. Are there players we';; be willing to pay big money for, or does the fact they want big money make them "ethically questionable"?A lot of boosters are contributing millions to facilities and academics. These funds are already pledged.
UT is rebuilding how it planned to rebuild with the kind of players it committed to bringing in. Academics, character and student leadership are important to UT, so the coaches are being selective and aren't going to be bringing in any more players that are highly rated but academically or ethically questionable like the ones that have been recently dismissed.
Pat Summitt did it, and Rick Barnes, Kellie Harper, Karen Weekly and Tony V. have been doing it for a while in the other marquee sports. Football is transitioning under CJH.
Good question. I get the feeling that UT is fine letting the big boys fight it out at the top. They are solely focused on culture, not necessarily a winning culture, but a clean program that doesn't stress winning championships.
Like I said earlier, winning championships doesn't necessarily mean a giant increase in revenue. I don't think they have that win at all cost mentality.
Thanks Plowman, Shes uselessYea, I’m not a fan of this new recruiting strategy. There is a reason Kelly left Notre Dame, and it is essentially what we are talking about, the administration limiting the coach in the type of kid he can recruit. It makes sense at ND, they are a high level academic institution, TN is not.
I will not give up hope for a NC, even with the direction this staff is headed.On a bright note, our programs are stable, our players want to be at UT, our coaches actually like each other and we didn't have to fire anybody or buy anybody out this year. UT seems to be a happier place. Maybe we'll become the Disneyland of CFB, where everyone wants to come.
At some point, they'll start to lose the fanbase if they are not careful. If they don't care, fans will eventually stop caring and lose interest. Neyland will stop seeing sell-out crowds.Good question. I get the feeling that UT is fine letting the big boys fight it out at the top. I agree with everything you said, and I also believe that it will work out as well. Those elite guys that do hit are a dime a dozen, getting large amounts on campus is the best way to find them. Those who dont will still be servicable players. I agree about the farm team stuff as well. Plowmans press conference concerned me, and LA basically confirmed what I already knew, TN doesnt give two ***** about winning anything important. As a fan it may be time to take a step back, if the school doesnt care why should we?I guess it will come down to whether huge NIL strategies pay off. I suspect it will. If those elite players only go to the programs willing to make them rich before they step on campus, those programs will dominate the ones that don't.
This also has coaching ramifications. The best coaches will want to go to the schools that are getting the best players.
I believe the teams that don't invest heavily in NIL deals will become farm teams for those that do. We're already seeing it this year. I fully expect that to continue.
Youve basically confirmed what I had already thought. Times are different now though, talent was more spread out then it is now. TN doesnt care about winning and that is what it is. Thanks LA for the notes, I hope you have a wonderful 22A lot of boosters are contributing millions to facilities and academics. These funds are already pledged.

Theyre already taking out 20k seats, that tells enough of the story right there. They dont expect to be able to sell out what they had.At some point, they'll start to lose the fanbase if they are not careful. If they don't care, fans will eventually stop caring and lose interest. Sorry LA, as much as I wished this would work, from the bottom of my heart, it won’t! That’s not the way of the world anymore! It’s a what are you going to do for me society, and the best athletes will go to the schools that pay the most, the rest will be fighting for the scraps! Glad most of us remember the 90s bc Tennessee football will never see that glory again with this approach. Like mentioned above, the occasional 8-10 win season will be the ceiling.
I don't think so. I said early on we need to establish ourselves as the 3rd best team in the east. While I think we've progressed toward that (we did beat everyone in the east not named GA and FL), I still don't think we're where we can call SC, KY, and even Mizzou automatic wins. We still have work to do to get there, primarily on defense.RIP UT Football?
I don't follow NFL close enough. Who does he coach for? Green Bay?View attachment 425690
@Enki_Amenra
Vrabel +350?
I assumed he would be the favorite. I'm a Homer, but to get the #1 seed with 85 players on the active roster and your best player going to IR is insane. Having Aaron Rodgers is it's own award, Lafleur doesn't need another.
There is a plan and everything is going according to it.From what I am reading here is UT plans on not recruiting big time players and not really wanting to invest in the NIL game and they are just going to surrender trying to win championships and expect fans to play along? Never mind that they want you to pay these outrageous season ticket prices now and be happy with 8,9 win seasons. Does anybody know for sure what the plans are for NILs or is it all just speculation ?
Last post for tonight. The thing about Barnes is his teams have a ceiling and hes shown that, dont hate on me for this one its not a knock on him for once, his teams are fine but never gonna win the big one.I don't think so. I look at this as two leagues, the ones that will spend, do anything to win at the highest level possible. I think there's about 10 teams that will do that. Then there's the rest. I think Tennessee is perfectly content to compete with the rest. Maybe catch lightening in a bottle every now and then. LA has mentioned Barnes multiple times. Look at how he was able to win with a bunch of guys that many scoffed at. I think they think that philosophy will translate to football. It works in the non revenue sports like men's baseball and women's basketball. I'm not sure it will translate to football. I guess we'll find out.
