Finding Gavin Newsom's moaning over UCLA very weird. He's crying foul that the UC system didn't vote on UCLA athletics being allowed to move to the Big Ten and even the UC system folks are saying that athletics decisions are sole privilege and responsibility of the campuses. He's demanding explanation from UCLA AD for how this move is supposed to help student athletes, not only at UCLA but also at other UC system and Pac 12 schools like Cal-Berkeley and is suggesting UCLA pay a fee and possibly split Big10 profits with Cal because Cal will now be hurting from lost Pac 12 revenue...
Of course Stanford and USC are private schools, which is the justification for why he's not bringing them into the discussion.
But he wants to monetarily punish a public state school for making an athletics decision that the AD proved will increase athletic department revenue and offer more NIL opportunities for athletes and allow them to keep all their Olympics sports AND give them a surplus to invest in new facilities for all sports... and Newsom is mad that Cal is going to be hurting... and he's not even a Cal grad.
I know for a fact Cal and UCLA aren't the only schools hurting. Stanford did or tried to terminate a few Olympic sport programs recently. Their wrestling program managed to raise an endownment to save the sport there. Not sure other sports were as successful.
