So disappointing and very dumb if we plan to let a GA be the QB coach. Yes Sheridan isn't your normal GA and is actually a good QB coach. However, he can only GA for 1 more year. This means you either have to lose another coach after next season to make room for a promotion or hope your lucky to find another guy willing to just be a GA while his previous school pays him.

My optimism side is saying Mahoney goes next year, Debord coaches OL, bring in a stud qb coach.

CZA as OC and passing game co. Also WRs
DeBorg as OC run game co. Also OL
George Quarles to QB coach.
CDM to Central Michigan as HC

Deal!

This might be the first thing in several days that comes even remotely close to making the slightest bit of sense.

What would you guys rather have going into next season: A new OC calling the same plays our players are already familiar with, or a new OC bringing in a brand new playbook?

I think the splash names wouldn't have just tossed their playbooks in the trash to come here, but that might be exactly what Butch wants in his OC.

Given that DeBord is a former pro style guy, maybe his contributions will be to remedy things that hurt us last year like red zone scoring. Maybe he will add some pro style wrinkles while primarily calling the plays Dobbs has been learning for the past two years.

I do think that is what Butch wanted. IMO it's not a bad idea. Taking a step back while these kids learn another offensive scheme would he a bad plan. Butch knows what he is doing here. He has to win now.

Guy has coached QB's and was passing coordinator at USF. It is not like he just got out of class and has just been doing laundry.

How successful was he at USF? Maybe very, I don't know, but if he was, it seems odd he's now a GA at UT. And it's worth noting that GA's cannot go out on the road and recruit.

Bama wandered through the wilderness for a decade until they got tired of it and ponied up big time to play football with the big boys. OH State has had success for a long time in multiple sports. A coaches salary, especially an assistants salary is peanuts compared to the overall budget. Our finances were fine until the wheels of our cash cow, football came off. Dwindling attendance, and donations coupled with the worst economic times since the depression all hitting at the same time, 2008, add in the huge buyouts we've been paying, and you end up where we are.

It's like this, if you've had a six figure job and your lifestyle is based on that six figure job and then all of a sudden you find yourself as a Walmart greeter, you're going to find yourself in a financial conundrum.

I see it as we had a 6 figure job but we lived like we had a 7 figure gig that would never go away. The cracks were there well before things went south.

That said, I'm dropping it since we're too far apart. No reason to clutter up an already garbage thread that needs to die.

I'm out too. :hi:

Fulmer had more experience in one finger than Butch has in his whole body of work. Fulmer's hire cost him his job. I would have more faith in Fulmer to make a hire than Butch simply because of his vastly superior experience. Has Butch ever had to hire an OC other than Bajakian?

Butch is building an NFL talent level Defense and offensive playmaker roster from dust. Fulmer rode Johnny's coat tail. I personally am much more impressed with Butch so far. Honestly Fulmer was successful as long as Cut was around.

A new OC with a new playbook that would mesh with Butch's style and what the players already know. A new OC so familiar with this system and with his style that can make the playmakers thrive in.

I see nothing new that DeBord can bring to the table. I think it's a comfort hire for Jones cause he had CMB for so long. And Jones wants total control of the offense which he'll get with DeBord. It's been said, but we could lose other offensive coaches due to this hire. Mahoney and Azzani. But it still seems we're not upgrading on offense like we have on defense. Best offensive coach we have right now is Gillespie and then Elder..

So you're saying an OC can make a huge difference? And I might add Fulmer did well long after he took over from Majors.

I made clear we as a staff have talked to various people in multiple places and that DeBord has a strong reputation.

He had chosen to admin those sports at Michigan rather than on-field coaching at other places b/c he was committed to Michigan and frankly there had been talk at one point he would become the Michigan A.D. until the Brady Hoke era unraveled in a mess.

I understand it seems odd that he's been not on the field, and that makes it difficult from a perception standpoint. But I also think if DeBord and other people involved in the search or calling UT on his behalf step forward publicly, many will be willing to view it with a more open-minded approach.

Again, both Hubbs and I talked to different people this evening, as did Austin, Paul and others, and folks who had been close-minded about DeBord no longer are. Additionally, perhaps UT will allow Dobbs to speak if it elects to hire DeBord and Dobbs can share what he told multiple people on campus tonight.

I hope you are right. That he finished poorly at UM and CMU with being out of football for a couple of years is disturbing.

Add to that that he hasn't been an OC in what, 7-8 years, and it's even more worrisome.

EDIT: Just read the above post. Still don't feel any better about this potential hire, but I'm not an expert so he could turn out to be great. Hope for our Vols' sake he does.

They've somehow gotten the idea to have Dobbs speak on DeBord's behalf at his press conference? A college kid has to get up there to somehow try and validate this hire at The University of Tennessee? Good god.

I'm sorry but this is just amusing at this point.
I love Butch Jones and I've always considered myself far from a "negavol" but I feel even more sick now than I did 6 hours ago when I heard DeBord was hired.

I have to agree with you. Just a hard sell.

It does sound like anyone who would have a say in it are all onboard with the hire.

Supposedly Debord has instituted the spread at two different schools per a discussion on Rucker's twitter feed. He also suggests the mentoring Azzanni thing as well.

Hard sell.
