I think if a situation occurred where Currie was trying to push Butch out and Butch found a school willing to hire him, they'd find some sort of agreement to negate that 3 million and make it happen.

Again, highly unlikely, but not completely unprecedented.

Agree that its plausible but unlikely.

I think that is only possible at 8-4 or 9-3. I think at 7-5 you are gonna have to fire him.

If Currie wants him gone, he would be willing to negotiate the buyout down.

Yeah. I just don't think it is at all possible at 7-5.

But like someone mentioned earlier, the Pastner deal at Memphis. Memphis should thank their lucky stars that GT came along. His buyout was absolutely absurd.

If what EZ says is true, Currie is already working the phones. It'll be a done deal before the mutual parting is announced.

If he's worth his salt as an AD, he should have had third parties reaching out to prospective head coach's agents/confidonts/etc. on Sunday, just to check their interest level.

I responded to Vols4us about this. I am not sure what you guys are referring to as "scheme." I know CBJ referred to his scheme when asked the question about not running on first and goal, but I am not sure I believe that.

To me, scheme is the general philosophy that you go by in order to run a system. I actually wholeheartedly believe his scheme will work. I don't believe certain play calling always falls under scheme. Your scheme can be the I-formation smashmouth football, but it won't work if you run a toss sweep every play.

To me, it's about situational play-calling and the players making the right reads. You have to understand your strengths/weaknesses and down/distance. Not running on 1st and goal is not scheme; it's out thinking your play calling. Then, Dormady makes two bad reads on 3rd downs. One, he should have kept it and would have gotten the first down. The second he kept it on 3rd and 5 and didn't get anywhere. Why call a zone read with a slow QB on 3rd down anyway?

I believe the offensive philosophy has shown it can work. The 2015 played very physical football. I actually believe the UF game shows it can work this year. You just have to be smart with your play calls and help put your QB in a successful position.

As Steve White said a week ago- "Football is not rocket science."

Agree. He has proven the offense can work. Not sure how anyone can argue otherwise.

There's precidence here without 5 losses. There's an established track record of poor coaching in tight games. The UGA and SC wins in '15 are now the exception not the rule.

If the Currie wants more than just an 8 win coach he'll make a move, as well he should. Keeping the status quo for recruiting or stability purposes is the outright acceptance of mediocrity.

This program and these players deserve and should demand better.

Butch isn't a bad coach, he's an excellent recruiter but just an average coach.

I agree

Solid post. I just think unless he loses 6 games he deserves one more year to show he is better than an average coach playing one of the toughest schedules in the country year in and year out. As I have stated before I think 8-9 wins years a solid years for where we are as a program.
Winning 10 or more once every 5 years is what I feel is realistic.

I agree with this.

I think the nature of our hypothetical losses are more important than the number of losses when it comes to whether Butch is fired or not.

The Bama game will be very ugly for Butch, IMO. Does he play just to escape with minimal injuries or go hard with the knowledge that his team is extremely likely lose no matter what?

Another epic beat down by the Tide, especially if we've already lost to UGA, will be a very bad look in year 5. Especially if it's obvious we aren't even playing to win or have a chance to win like last year.

This year is not looking like a terribly difficult schedule. Last year's was not as bad as it looked early on. Assuming 8-4, he's had plenty of opportunity to show he's better than that.

We will have not reached 10 wins in his tenure, FTR.

That is the epitome of accepting mediocrity. And the way I see it is, this is Tennessee football, one of the elite schools of college football and that isn't good enough. And besides, this is Butch's year 5 and we've never sniffed 10 wins.

Alabama went through a period where they won 8 and 9 games a year... They didn't accept it and went through so many coaches till they found the right guy. Tennessee should do the same.

It's $2 million, not $3 million. CBJ would owe $2 mil to UT if he voluntarily leaves. If he won't pay it and his new school can't afford it, UT would see value in negotiating terms. It's a bottom line deal. The most cost-effective option for UT is to help CBJ secure a new job by smoothing the financials. Saves face for him and his family and it saves money for UT. Win-win.

I'm sure both sides are considering their options... and have been for months. Sexton and Currie are smart guys. They know the drill. Feelers are out.

Bottom line is: CBJ and the Vols must beat Georgia and then be at least competitive versus Bama. Anything less will be the end of his time at UT.

Yep - which is why the 8-4 vs. 7-5 conversation could be moot. 3 straight loses (one ugly to Alabama) could bring the ax even if he could theoretically still reach 8 wins total.

It's $3 million.

http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/...jones-received-500000-raise-tennessee/340432/

Tennessee now would owe Jones $2.5 million for every year left on his deal for terminating him without cause. Previously the Vols would have owed him $2 million per year as his buyout.

Jones, who is 20-17 overall in three seasons at Tennessee, would owe the Volunteers $4 million if he leaves before Feb. 28, 2017 and $3 million if he leaves between that date and Feb. 28, 2018.

This is based off his last contract extension which he signed in December 2015.

The only thing I can add to this discussion is this. Life and Football seasons are short and precious. Try not focusing so much on the negative and just live in the moment of this season. We aren’t guaranteed another day or another season. Enjoy this one. Go Vols!

The Florida loss this past weekend is as bad as or worse than losing to South Carolina or Vandy in my book. I can't stomach losing to a Florida team that is that bad. Watching that crap fest unfold for the 3rd time in 4 years is more than I can stomach.

That's just me though. I have an unhealthy hatred for that program.

When it comes to Florida, there is no such thing...it's like trying to divide by zero, simply is not possible.

Define "sniffed" in this context. I would go so far as to say that 10 wins nearly happened in both 2015 and 2016. The team has won 9 in consecutive years. Also, there were at least two games each year that were lost by UT when UT had multiple opportunities to out the game away.

I would say Butch "sniffed" 11 wins in both 2015 and 2016.
