Ok.. been working like a mad man so I can get free and go get my family out of Florida tomorrow. They are in Jacksonville and I don't want them there. So i haven't had a chance to comment on the game yet.. especially the defense.
Here is how I saw it.
The O left hung them out to dry in the first half. Drops, drops, and more drops. We had less than 8 minutes in TOP in the first half. The D was gassed. And the game plan didn't help any. It seems to me they had everyone playing back and reacting to the play instead of attacking it.
You can still attach the option and be disciplined in your assignment. But jumper was 6 or 8 yards back, the DL was 2 yards off the LOS and they would get 3 yards just snapping the ball. Then they started running counters, everyone sitting back reading the flow of the GT offense would start one way and the QB and a lineman going out the back door.
We never adjusted .. never adjusted to the counter, never adjusted on how the DL played the LOS, never adjusted the zone pass d we were in to help with run support.
The D played their guts out and played how the coaches asked them to. They seemed disciplined in their assignments. I remember one play where Kongbo stayed home as the play flowed the other way and he blew up their play.
It was the game plan (on O and D) that allowed GT to get such a huge TOP advantge and wear out guys out.
We played right into their hands.
Luckily our guys had enough guts and want to that they hung in there and earned this game away from GT.
I'm not disappointed in the least that they gave up so many rushing yards, because they fought and went back in and TOOK this game from GT.
Anyone that says they don't deserve this win can suck it.
Now what I do want to see is adjustments. Shoop made them last year so I'm thinking this game was an anomaly. I think they practiced one way to defend the option and thought it would work. When it didn't they weren't sure what to do..
And you can't take anything away from GT, their execution was almost flawless.
