A strong preseason by Derek Barnett has the Philadelphia Eagles excited about Derek Barnett.
The national media is excited about Barnett's potential as well.
Two NFL.com experts picked Barnett to take home NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors: Steve Wyche and Marc Sessler.
"Barnett is showing in the preseason how special and tenacious he is at getting after the passer," Wyche said. "Playing on that defensive front in a pass-happy division will benefit him."
Barnett had three sacks, 12 pressures, and an 18.8 pass-rush productivity this preseason, using his bend and a new inside move to get to the quarterback. He is projected to split first-team reps with Vinny Curry at right defensive end.
"It's August, and Philly's rough-and-tumble rookie already looks like a savvy veteran ready to wreak havoc," Sessler said.
Will Barnett play enough snaps to garner consideration for Rookie of the Year honors? That won't be a problem according to defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, who is pleased with the rookie's progress.
"We expected that from him," Schwartz said. "I think a lot was made with him being a bit of a one-trick pony. He was an edge, speed rush guy in college. And he had such the ability to do that that I think he got labeled a guy that's all he could do. And I think we saw more in him than that.
"Like I said, he's played tough against the run. He's been instinctive. He's been productive when he's been out there. We could only judge him on that. But there's nothing that -- just saying we haven't been surprised by that about him. I don't know the best way to put that."
Pederson was asked how much Barnett would play in Philadelphias matchup against Washington on Sunday.
I think Derek is another one, I think he had a tremendous pre-season. Hes definitely going to be in the rotation, Pederson said at his press conference Wednesday. As you know, we rotate a lot of defensive linemen. Eight of those guys are usually rolling in and out of there. Hell have a big impact, and a big part of this game. Hell have a substantial role in this football game.
Amongst all the "he locked in on his receiver"s and "threw off his back foot"s, I didn't notice the scouting report where a first time starter kept his cool during a 14 point comeback including a 93 yard drive just to TIE the game. The reward was two overtimes against a team that couldn't be stopped offensively. ONE nonconversion, failure to generate a TD or (egad!) an interception and he's the reason we lose. That pressure cooker has chewed up many a quality QB including our very own Dobbs against A&M last year. I'm not sold that Dormady was "nervous" in the early going. You go into the game knowing that Jennings is a go to guy and mandatory target. Trying to make that happen without being allowed to develop that feel and trust a quarterback has with their dependable playmakers would make you look off-balance when it doesn't immediately happen. He appeared to be developing chemistry on the fly...especially when JJ left the game. Guarantano had his helmet on and no doubt would have entered the game if Dormady hadn't generated that first scoring drive. He was communicating with his OL and setting his receivers in the proper formation like a multi-year starter by then...it was noticeable. Afterwards you had to ride that and see if he could pull this game off...spoiler alert, he did. Definitely hasn't locked up the starting job but has earned the chance to do so. Bad QBs don't come out with a win in games like this...they just don't.
Byrd' passes were behind him and either high or low. Ball placement must be better for sure.
They could have done QD and the D a favor and ran the ball more in the first half, especially since it looked like he was nervous.
Used the run to set up the pass. I kept saying that the whole first half.
Didn't I post before WHY I didnt like him at QB? Did he not go out there and do exactly what I said? If I can see it I'm pretty sure these SEC DCs can see it too. Hurry him and he throws off his back foot. Plus he does not come off whoever his first read is. That's a major league problem for a junior QB to me. But I'm sure this will be flipped to something personal and this is my last post about the QB playing right now. I have ZERO expectations for this team and look forward to watching Kelly, Callaway, Warrior, Bituli, Trey Smith, Taylor and Chandler this year. #GBO
If Dormady doesn't put two balls below the waist and behind his back hip Byrd has almost as big of a game as Callaway. On the second ball Byrd has his man toasted on a post route and had only one man between himself and the endzone. With his athletic ability I think everyone would agree with how that one would've turned out.
