Robert Gillespie hired as new RB Coach

In regard to the new staff, graham was like a guy wearing polka dots in a room full of dude's rocking stripes.

Don't mention his championships in a weaker conference if you don't want the fact they were won in a weaker conference used against you. I used the ammo you provided.

Jay has done more for UT as a player and coach than Butch has so far. Please note I said so far.

You know what's worse than the grammar police? The "I get to decide who is and isn't a fan" crowd. My outlook isn't negative, it's realistic. I'm waiting to see if he can actually coach in the SEC before I declare him the next big thing. I support the team always. I support the coach when he wins. Let's be clear. There is the team, and there is the coach. They are not one and the same. I'm a Vol fan, not a support Butch Jones whether he wins or loses fan. I guarantee if CBJ doesn't do a good job, all the votes of support will disappear.

Every conference is weaker than the SEC. So you would only be happy with coaches who won SEC titles... slim pickins.

He won his titles against teams that had equal talent.

Great Hire! Who can argue with Rivals Recruiter of the Year? And VFL should not apply to coaches...the idea of that is just silly. All I care is that coaches are VFN. (Vol For Now)

Haha you didnt use it against me i proved that stupid point wrong as did many other here. And sorry, but to me your outlook is pretty negative. Butch has worked his ass off for UT so far, and put together a solid recruiting class that Dooley almost completely wasted. jumped about 20 spots in the rankings in 30 days of recruiting. Id say thats something of significance. I also believe this was a great replacement hire, another thing he has done. How much more could he have done in this little of time?

All due respect but you don't have to blindly follow CBJ, just open your eyes and see that he's done some good things here in 3 months time, including a damn good replacement hire of CJG.

I freely admit he's done some good things, but I also believe he's made mistakes. Not addressing Graham's happiness before the FSU thing came up was a mistake. The replacement hire seems to be a good rebound. Again, I'll wait and see how our RBs do next year, and how well CRG recruits before I say it was a good rebound. I want to see results. People can say what they want, but if the RBs regress next year, will it have been a good hire? If they progress, I promise to say I was wrong and he was a great hire. If they don't progress, then we can't call it a great hire.

But I also would say you cant bet the river before you seen him paddle, CBJ needed a year with CJG before you go throwing money at him...unlike UFS throwing money at coaches they think can give them the inside to Tennessee recruiting 2014...1st with T.martin and now with CJG...they are reeling at UFS and it wont be long before the ship will sink. When you have that much Coach turn-over it rocks the ship...just ask CUM and what it did with him as he lost all of the coaches around him.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but he was hired to win. If he determined that another coach would be a better fit as a recruiting coordinator, why would he then hand the role to Graham simply to appease him? Why would he throw money at a coach he didn't know? Why actively seek to increase Graham's salary when the athletic budget is already stretched too thin?

Is it possible that because you loved Graham as a player that you are failing to be objective in your assessment of the situation? In so far as I can tell, Jones didn't do anything to drive Graham off; he simply treated Graham like a position coach, which he is. He was paid according to his duties, and considering Jones's relative lack of familiarity with Graham as a coach, that's reasonable. Jones wasn't hired to placate Jay Graham; he was hired to win. If Graham felt like he was best served to go elsewhere, that is his choice. Jones isn't responsible for Graham's decisions.

CRG can recruit and was a very solid SEC back with some talent. If he can coach as well as he played we're in good, if not better shape.

Will always have love for CJG, for his playing days, not so much the one year of coaching.

I remember he was a pretty solid RB at UF when he and Graham were a 1-2 punch. However, does he have the coaching chops?

You proved nothing wrong. Everyone knows some coaches can move to tougher conferences and succeed and some cannot. Butch Jones hasn't proven he can come to the SEC and succeed. He also hasn't proven he'll come here and fail. When it comes to the SEC, he hasn't proven anything. Some are putting the cart before the horse. Success elsewhere does not project to success here. I hope he succeeds, but I'm waiting for him to show me he can.

I believe my outlook is realistic, you call it negative. I believe your outlook is delusional, but I'm sure you call it positive. How are you going to feel about CBJ if 3 years from now, we're still in the same place? And please, don't act like that's what I want because I can assure you, I do not. What I want is for football season to get here so we can see how well CBJ does in the SEC.

You believe CBJ put that class together by himself? We signed two four star receivers. Jay Graham is listed by rival as lead recruiter for both. That's half of our 4 star haul. I think Jay put in a great deal of work himself on UT's behalf.

lol besides if it doesn't work out in three years we will be in a great situation to hire Chip Kelly once the Eagles run him out of town or Dan Mullen since we would have gone to the spread or heck even Dana H. from WVU if he fixes his D and O at WVU lol

You make some valid points. I still think Jay leaving will prove to be bad for UT. And I believe I am being objective. While I think Jay deserves more respect than many posters are giving due to his playing days here, my feelings on him as a RB coach and coach in general are based on what he did as a coach.

I'd rather have Gillespie than Graham every day of the week! I think Graham should be banned from Neyland. I hope FSU sucks and he gets fired.

Again, let me say that I don't believe he's a bad coach. I believe that Graham is a good position coach and excellent recruiter. I'm not sure he was an ideal fit with the new staff. I think Graham felt like there was a better fit for him, and he left for it. I respect Graham, but I don't think he was irreplaceable as a position coach and if Gillespie proves to be a better fit philosophically I believe it will work out well.

As for the matter of the overall impact on Tennessee in the long run, I'm not entirely convinced that this will prove to be that impacting. Gillespie has strong ties in Florida that should reap benefits in recruiting, and his track record seems to illustrate an ability to produce successful backs while utilizing spread principles. He's given me no reason to assume he'll fail or perform any worse than Graham did in his time as RB coach.

As for the separate matter of whether or not one believes Jones will have success, this is clearly still a wait and see proposition. However, there have been signs that recruits, players, and former Vols have been relatively pleased up to this point. There have yet to be any clear missteps and he inherits a team with talent and experience. There's plainly work to be done and a new system to install, but the desire to view the future positively doesn't necessarily have to mean an individual is delusional. It simply means that they would sooner assume the best of the new staff rather than becoming mired in the past failings. Everyone approaches change differently, and there's nothing necessarily wrong with either approach. At the end of the day we're all a part of a large and diverse fan base, and disagreement and conflict are natural. :hi:

Seems like Graham just wanted to knock the dust off his shoes after he bet on a nag. Talking about the HC not the program. Can't say that I blame him.
