Robert Gillespie hired as new RB Coach

Rivals recruiter of the year for 2012....obviously he does ok.

Where is this information coming from? According to Rivals D.J. Durkin was their "recruiter of the year" in 2012. Gillespie wasn't even in their top 25 for 2012 (or 2011).

Best I can find is Scout/Foxsports.net named Gillespie their Big East conference co-recruiter of the year for 2012. Not knocking Gillespie because I think he's a good hire but he has never been Rivals recruiter of the year.

You make some valid points. I still think Jay leaving will prove to be bad for UT. And I believe I am being objective. While I think Jay deserves more respect than many posters are giving due to his playing days here, my feelings on him as a RB coach and coach in general are based on what he did as a coach.

Jay didn't want to be here for whatever the reason. To be honest, the "reason" he wanted to leave isn't important, the only thing that matters is that he wanted to leave. There is no way to hide unhappiness, it will always find a way to creep into what it is you are trying to accomplish. In this case, asside from coaching, he was trying to convince (recruit) young men that UT is the place to be, but how could he convince them, when he himself wasn't convinced? He is better off, UT is better, and our student athletes are better off with Jay out of the picture PERIOD

Seems like Graham just wanted to knock the dust off his shoes after he bet on a nag. Talking about the HC not the program. Can't say that I blame him.

Care to clarify what you mean by calling coach Butch Jones a nag? Is nag a term used to describe someone who is in your face, demanding, and a stickler for details?

Robert, Welcome to Big Orange Country! In your time at Florida we went 2-2 against you. Not exactly great but better than most Spurrier and Post Spurrier years. We also won a National Championship during that span so please help take us back to those days ASAP! Even the years we lost to UF, we were ranked very high! God Bless and Good Luck!

Can this Dools' "VFL" thing die now? There are none on the coaching staff. There are none in the administration. Can whoever wants to play or coach at UT just be a Vol? It really doesn't need to be anything more or less, because it is not an individual sport. It is a "team" sport. The Vols.

I am very pleased with this hire. He is on equal footing with Graham with great upside.

Thank you.....

.... and welcome CRG.

Why are you always digging for negative when you like the positive. If you would quit being so anal you would be a pretty good poster.

Jay Graham to my knowledge never recruited anybody. Lattimore was a home state lock with or without Graham and a natural beast with or without Graham. The point is Lattimore is so good he's bringing cash to Graham merely by association.

Jay Graham is about as VFL as Tee Martin is. Jay Graham did not want to be at Tennessee. His decision to jump ship to FSU after one year clearly reflects that.

None of us were in that office when he told Butch he was leaving. None of us were in Jay's mind when he made that decision. So we don't know anything with any degree of certainty. Same goes for Tee. We don't OWN a player or ex-player just because they attend(ed) the UT. I too wish we had gotten and kept both Tee and Jay but we didn't. I moved and lived outside the state of Tennessee. First way out in the Southestern states and now in Kentucky. No matter where I was I bled orange. I had three offers to work in Tennessee, two from my alma mater which was shocked both times over a period of 12 years that I said "no." Like Tee and Jay, some judged me harshly. They didn't know and didn't ask why. First time, I had just recently moved and was starting work that very next week. If you've ever moved distantly from your "home" you know the hassles and expenses involved. Doing it again less than a week before you had just done it, doesn't make sense for most of us working stiffs. The other time, I had a kid with a behavioral disability. The support group including doctor and therapist and parents in similar circumstances was superb and progress was very noticeable. Leave that like a selfish jackal and ruin my own flesh and blood's life? Nope. The last time, I had two offers. Among other things the Tennessee one refused to even tell me what my salary would be, while the one in Kentucky was up front about everything I asked them about. I say again, none of us were in that office when he told Butch he was leaving. None of us were in Jay's mind when he made that decision. So we don't know anything with any degree of certainty.

For the ones saying graham improved the running game his first year, well it was inevitable. When you go from having no position coach to having one any serviceable coach could have done what graham did. Not knocking the guy and thanks for his contributions while he was here just saying we aren't losing a miracle worker. Go vols good luck gillispie

Correct me if I'm wrong, but he was hired to win. If he determined that another coach would be a better fit as a recruiting coordinator, why would he then hand the role to Graham simply to appease him? Why would he throw money at a coach he didn't know? Why actively seek to increase Graham's salary when the athletic budget is already stretched too thin?

Is it possible that because you loved Graham as a player that you are failing to be objective in your assessment of the situation? In so far as I can tell, Jones didn't do anything to drive Graham off; he simply treated Graham like a position coach, which he is. He was paid according to his duties, and considering Jones's relative lack of familiarity with Graham as a coach, that's reasonable. Jones wasn't hired to placate Jay Graham; he was hired to win. If Graham felt like he was best served to go elsewhere, that is his choice. Jones isn't responsible for Graham's decisions.

You weren't talking to me but I agree with you. Also Jones had high praise for Jay. especially on the speaking circuit where they visited towns like Memphis and Nashville. While I may have certain views about staff composition, any open-minded person can see that Jones didn't drive Jay away. In Nashville, Jay Graham steals the show — again — while looming vacation puts focus on coaches' families » GoVolsXtra

Funny how you guys are still questioning Graham and his loyalty to UT. Hubbs said on the radio that Jay wasn't comfortable being the lone holdover from the last staff. Something he experienced at Miami Oh, and wasn't crazy about. Personally I'm gonna believe Hubbs before I believe Ainge. If anything Ainge should have his Vol Card pulled for calling out a fellow Vol on the radio without having his facts straight, not Jay Graham. Graham made a business decision, like it or leave it. It would be really interesting to know the contributions to the university of those saying Graham isn't a VFL. Not just money, did you play, coach, etc. I'm just wondering...do we have people on here qualified to question if Graham is a VFL? Perhaps a few, not many, if any.

We just got a new RB coach with great credentials, yet we have folks still crying about Graham like lil' bi-ches. Enjoy the moment folks.

Disagree about Ainge. Ainge has more inside connections than Hubbs. Brent is the best around but when it comes to inside info on former players I take Ainge all day and Graham deserved to get bashed. Imagine if Jones had let Graham go what the outcry would have been. Its obvious Jones is a relentless worker and Grahams 2 bosses Spurrier and Dooley were not 12all hr a day guys. Just sayn...
