Rucker: Nico is being redshirted

Pruitt stuck with JG because there was no one else. What if Nico isn’tpicking it up as quickly as he should? What if he isn’t it? I believe CJH would play him if he was ready. But then again Milton started over Hooker in ‘21. Get used to 8 wins for a few years. We don’t have WR or CBs to win close ones. LB looks solid and DLine should be good. Who knows about OL next year? We might be hurting.

I would surmise he's not as good as advertised, at least not at this point, or they wouldn't be doing this.
He can still be REALLY good and not be ready after the junior year. (and if he talks to Peyton, he'll understand the importance of making college last). Plus, now with NIL, if he's not first round, he could make more money staying.

If Nico, who has been with the team for a whole ass year, can’t learn the offense then we are ***cccccccccccccccc’d

It all makes sense now, throw 2023 season away to redshirt the next coming. That's only gonna contribute 2 yrs as a true starter.
Odds were the year was gonna be sht anyway ...So Nico wins Missouri game and Florida ,what does that really do? Give us a better bowl ? How you know Nico doesn't get hurt and you stuck with Nico anyway ..Nico can't help our slow Lbs and can't cover for our DBS ...He also can't throw to himself ...But In all honesty who will he have to throw to next year? Gotta hit portal for Wrs and a good TE.. Hopefully we are good at running back ...We gotta have speed at Lbs and better Cbs ...

Florida freshman quarterback came in tonight and brought Florida back and got the lead. He came in and played pretty good. I don’t think Nico was ready to start this year from the jump but at this point he is probably ready to see some live action. Whatever action he can get now only helps going into next season. He definitely needs bowl season reps. GBO

I do think keeping the red shirt makes sense. Florida State lost their quarterback last night against a nobody.
Yes, a freshman played for them, but it was no where near a decent opponent.

Maybe he leaves early for the NFL or maybe he does not, however I believe the intent is to buy a little more insurance at the qb position.

Whatever the case, it seems like everyone else is more capable of finding a quarterback than we are.

Give Beck credit for last night he was dropping dimes on balls, making good , quick decisions and running when appropriate.

In the least allows us to see what a good quarterback actually looks like.

Their offensive line also played very well on the road. As opposed to what Tennessee does.

I also believe I heard that Nico is only been playing quarterback for a limited time relative to some of his high tier peers. His development is amazing if that is the case and that would also make sense for him to spend a little more time in the quarterback room, and on the sideline before he’s the starter.

Why Heupel??

Now you're you putting Merklinger in the same grade as Nico...

Merklinger maybe can't redshirt because Nico could get injured.

Nico could have played a ton this year and the program would have been much better off for it. WTH is Heupel doing???

No it wouldn’t. He’s played in three games, so if he played against Vandy he wouldn’t still be able to redshirt.

Dont think this is correct unless the rules have changed recently

A player can play in 4 games and keep their redshirt. Bowl games don't count either.

For those saying it would be pointless to start Nico now, how about this reason, I'm just sick of looking at Joe. I mean it. I'm tired of looking at him. I don't want to see him again.

This is my understanding.

Starting a freshman in the SEC generally doesn't work out for even good quarterbacks. Tebow didn't even start as a freshman. We were always in bad shape if we seriously needed Nico this year.

As with the rest of society, there are some seriously ignorant folks in the UT fanbase man. The heavy drinking on gamedays also surely contributes (alcohol is a quite destructive drug even compared to hard drugs, just happens to be legal so...) I am with you though in trying to remind these folks of some very basic facts about our team, staff, and college football in general. It isnt easy to do either sometimes haha. I usually just avoid the FF after losses for at least a few days until the idiots and trolls move along. Not sure why I bothered this week .

Why would Nicco not transfer out. Coach says he wasn't better than Joe freakin Milton. Right now TN has nothing coming in unless they get really lucky in the portal. Remember freshman can't play here. Why would he not transfer to Washington or Oregon where there's talent waiting for the next good QB.
Nico has a very substantial bank account that will keep him here.

We're gonna finish 8-4. I'm not thrilled with the way we've played and won't be satisfied with it long term but to keep things in perspective we've only had 4 seasons where we won 8 or more regular season games since 2007.
While this is true we played 9 unranked teams this year. Compare that to previous years.

How many times did UT lose to unranked in the last 20 years? A lot of you guys seem really entitled. Tennessee has been a bottom 5 sec team for the last 20 years and now a good coach has got them up to top 5 sec team with a QB that is terrible at throwing over 5 yards and it isn't good enough eh? This was always a transition year. I'm glad he's not throwing the frosh out there. I'm more interested in his 2nd and 3rd year.

You must have not watched much TN football the past 20 years. One 11 win season and all of a sudden you expect that moving forward. How many times in the past 20 years would we have been really happy with 7, 11 and 8 wins? Let’s say we finish with 9 wins (bowl game included). That’s 27 wins in 3 years. Guess when the last time that was done? 2002-2004 when we won 28 games.

Clausen and Ainge were pretty good……and Manning too
Really no alternatives in all three of those examples. And all from a time where if you took a snap, you lost an opportunity to redshirt. As recently as last week, there were season targets still possible. If the team had reached those goals, Nico retaining a season of eligibility wouldn’t have been any priority. Now, the rest of the season a wash? Why the hell not? Shouldn’t need 3-4 more seasons, but he’s got them.

And Joe is ready? What about any of the other QB’s on the roster when Joe displays he is a walking bad decision? I don’t care if it’s a kid from fraternity row, at least try something different to show you give a damn about the game or the team.
I don't think it mattered yesterday which of our quarterbacks started since Georgia could pretty much score at will on Banks' charges.

Milton is what he's always been. I don't think he's terrible by any means and I don't think he's why we lost 4 games, but he's also clearly not that good of a starting QB. He has improved but not nearly enough for a guy who is in his 6th season now. He's still making the same type mistakes he was making 2 years ago when he was given the starting job. I like the guy but even I got tired of all the hype of his potential and every week announcers talking about how he can throw the ball over a mountain. Who cares if you can't be consistent?
