Serious QB discussion

I know on occasion Hyatt was running wide open, but often Hooker "threw guys open" so to speak. To me that and effective running are what we're missing the most from the QB position.

Remember how different Keyton looked with Hooker? Now the ball is coming at you super fast (or super slow like the drop yesterday), slightly behind you, or way on front of you, etc. I'm not saying to "bench Joe" or anything like that, but I don't see these guys developing a chemistry with him in the remaining half season. I also don't think these receivers are nearly as bad as they look.

I think it's imperative that Joe run a bit more to at least bring that element back to the offense. He doesn't need to sacrifice his body, just take what the D gives him.

Hendon had the touch and accuracy. Milton has the fastball. Milton will have times he can throw someone open but it won’t be consistent like Hooker did. Milton however can throw the ball a mile and the unfortunate part is the deep threats aren’t there this year.

The one good thing I saw yesterday is him take the leap of running the ball more. He’ll need to do that 5-7 times a game and he can power it clearly.

We had a dropped pass for a TD and penalties which helped prevent us from getting above 30.

At the same time, Milton doesn’t seem to have a feel for the game. Just picks the wrong place to throw. Hooker last year really had a feel for the game. I wouldn’t start Nico at Bama, but I can see Nico coming for the rest of the year if we lose to Kentucky.

I mean, yesterday he was empirically worse than Milton. Not even arguable.
On numerous occasions he would just chuck up some BS rainbow and I remember being excited thinking “that’s a pick” only to be let down when there wasn’t A RECEIVER OR A DB within 10 yards of the throw!
🤦‍♂️
Johnson is terrible!

And halfway thru the season, we control our destiny…. Everyone would have taken that scenario thru 6 games if offered before kickoff of Virginia game.
That's why I said "as long as we are in the divisional hunt", acknowledging that we are still in the hunt. No need to move on to Nico in these circumstances unless Nico was clearly better, and in the coaches informed opinion (versus the many uninformed opinions on VN), Nico is not clearly better at this point. You don't give up on the season and start preparing for the next season as long as you still have a shot to win something of note. It isn't fair to the upperclassmen/seniors.

To me it seems obvious they’ve now put the handcuffs on him. Early in the year we were throwing quick screens constantly, which I assume to have been pre snap reads by Milton off of called run plays.

Notice those were basically gone this week?

And then after his second int of the season where he just didn’t see a middle of the field safety, it felt like they completely closed off the playbook.

Seems the staff has zero confidence in him, but isn’t ready to move on from him. The only hope I have is that TAM is probably the most talented D we will play

I guess I’m OK with giving Nico the ball, but if so you have to be OK with a 7-5 record at season end, which is probably what we’re looking at.

People are over looking the fact that this offense is a very difficult one to operate. It’s all about very quick reads, perfect timing by both receivers and QBs, and finesse throws. It’s not always something you can just simply get used to with playing time. And no, Joe does not have what it takes to run this offense effectively, but that doesn’t mean tossing in Nico would result in him figuring it out—it’s about the entire machine operating in sync and being timed perfectly, paired with a QB who can read it and time throws perfectly.

I think 8-4 seems likely with a split of Missouri and Kentucky. We could beat both as I don't think both are really that good (then again we are not either). If we beat both, we are staring at a 9-3 season which is where most people put us.

Season is kind of a failure because we lost to Florida and still have that "Monkey" on our back. Out of our big 3 rivals, they were the one that was most likely to beat and the one, we really, needed to beat and we lost it. It has put a major damper on the season overall.

However, if we come out and beat Alabama next week (very unlikely), I think that changes the narrative on the season.

Well the good thing is that Lane and Milton aren't options next year. Hopefully that's a plus.
The part that worries me is when they show the down field angles and none of our receivers have separation. Keyton has handicapped the offense with big time drops on throws that would either of been touchdowns or 1st downs. Joe has looked pretty bad at times, but if Keyton just catches the balls that have hit his hands our offense looks totally different. I assume they are planning to redshirt Nathan Leacock, but it’d be nice to see him replace Keyton.

I really doubt there is anyone left who thinks Milton is the guy to get us any kind of championship. But, other than the very untimely INT he is a stabilizing force and when he does run can do damage with his legs. I guess my question is do we stick with his game management and just give up on the passing game realizing our WRs are not exactly world class either or do we go ahead and give Nico his chance? My honest opinion, while likely to be unpopular, is not to throw Nico into his first start at Tuscaloosa. Start Milton but have Nico ready if our passing game is as impotent as it was tonight. We could try the two QB thing too.
Surely you aren’t serious?

We can speculate all day long, but the fact is Nico is simply not unless Joe gets hurt. It’s his team, and I am with you. I don’t want Nico to start at this juncture. I want our receivers to catch the friggin’ ball and I want Joe to run harder and more often to keep these defenses off balance. The forced pass on 4th and 2 was embarrassing. He never hits passes on the run, it was forced and all he needed to do was run over the guy in front of him. He seems to have found a little moxy judging by how he ran afterward, but him standing over DBs talking trash after he steamrolls them is also a bit embarrassing. He needs to get up and go play and do it again and again. He just put up 100 yards for an entire game. Taking off and steamrolling smaller guys is the least he can do and again he’s still not doing enough of it.

I said it at the beginning of the season, our defense and run game might be what turns out to be the reason for what to me at this point would be a surprising 10+ win season.

Milton is hardly the only one with problems. Way too little discipline with penalties, easy dropped passes by our veteran receiver, and in my opinion we have not kicked field goals when the points were imperative. Had we kicked a FG at one point in the FL game we would have had a completely different approach at the end of the game and better chances to pull it off.

On top of that, either Mincey or Mays has been out for many games. Mincey went out I think kind of early in the second half. With both of those guys in, Joe is more comfortable and our run game is even better. We’ve seen good QBs play with contingency to the performance of their OL. Even mobile QBs like Rattler.

For starters, no way do I want to put Nico in behind a line that let Milton get sacked 3 times and is missing a key difference maker during the gauntlet we are about to face that includes 3 road games and a home game against the #1 team in the country.

Regardless, I think a more mobile Joe will give us a better chance to win—again especially if we clean up the other areas I mentioned and can stay healthy on the OL.

I would not put Nico in against Bama, but our next supposedly easy win I would start Nico. Imo we are a much better team overall than last year with the exception of qb
And a Tackle and 3 wide receivers. And Hendon. If we could of had last years offense with this year's defense.

Running game and OL play has improved each game, so no, we're not regressing. Passing game isn't nearly as good as last year, but most informed fans knew this coming into the season. And no, you likely don't know what Heupel is thinking
I was mainly talking about the passing game. The passing game is regressing.

Maybe…. Did you see any wrs wide open?
I’m not trying to say Milton is great and all that. I’m just saying I haven’t seen receivers getting open.
I did. He’s super late. When first read is open he’s got a chance but not very accurate. I like Joe. Wish him well. But he ain’t got it. And he’s regressing

The defense of Milton is incredibly odd to me. His ceiling is evidently Hooker's first year at VT, which is at best mediocre. It's also telling his ceiling is that of a first year player in an offense that surely isn't as prolific as Heupel's has been throughout all his stops. His completion percentage through the years is much more similar to JG than it is to Hooker.

I ran through the game logs to drill down to games with a minimum of 25 pass attempts, and he's managed to produce on a level again more similar to JG than Hooker. I am to believe that the number 2 ranked player nationally in the 2022 class isn't capable of playing to a level of Milton or JG? I doubt anyone can convince me of that.

Any possibility that maybe Nico just isn’t better than Joe right now and we need to be patient?
Please correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Nico show up just after Christmas last year ?
By my count that gives him about 10 mos with our program. If he’s as good as advertised he should be ready.
