Shortages and price variations where you are

With a bunch of adults leading them and giving them that poor advice.

Not all. Several kids at the round table still made the wrong choice after being ON A SHOW that explains the pitfalls of making the wrong choice.

I’m supposed to be mad at the lender? Lol.

Actually, no. Their tenets are actually very giving.
Have you read the Nine Satanic Statements?

Now I want to clarify. If people want to follow that religion it is their right. And in no way makes anyone a bad person.

And if someone wants to be greedy that is their right as well. We all probably are in a way.

I can acknowledge there is no way you are forced to participate in it.
When the school systems, govt/politicians, media and family are promoting this concept, most 18 year olds are going to go along with it.

I know some of you were already financially smarter than most at 18 or had good people around you to give good advice. Most of us were clueless about (I would have/could have very easily fallen into this trap early on) all of this.

If you can multiply 4 x 35k and not see a problem, then you’re choosing to not see it.

I guess you don't have to be mad at them. Just be aware that they are taking advantage of a one sided deal that was arranged by the govt. I guess that makes it legal... not necessarily ethical.

Unethical abounds. You mad at Sony, Google, Facebook, instagram….?

You need more laws because you place no responsibility on individuals.

I don’t need more laws.
I also place responsibilities on businesses (which are really just individuals) and societies (which are really just groups of individuals) at large.

The mistake I see many make is having to narrow of a focus in their rush to assign responsibility.

And you ignore the point I made earlier. The selling point on getting these loans is that you will be able to pay them back once you get in your career. The propaganda leads them to believe that high student loan debt is just a price of getting a higher education.

I managed to survive and had my debt to a minimum. But if I knew then what I know and/or if I would have had a different group of people advising me in high school. my entire school choice would have been different. I would have gone to 2 year community college to get my engineering prerequisites and then transferred to a 4 year to get my bachelor's. The people around me were not engineering majors, were not even college grads for most (I was first in my family) or were too caught up in the denigration of community colleges over universities.

Yea, oddly I believe you are responsible for yourself.

Oh well, we agree to disagree.

I do hate 529s though and see them to be part of the problem in rising education costs. Became gold mines for schools to compete over.

Im curious as to why

The quick and dirty:
  • Homeless people either have to eat extremely cheap food (often high in simple carbs and low nutritional value) or in high quantities when they do get to eat. The metabolism of the body changes to store energy rather than burning it. This causes fat cells to multiply and fill to store energy for later. I learned this while working with a ministry with high homeless participation.
  • Cell phones are the most efficient ways to find jobs, food, housing, etc. If you are on the street/in a camp or vehicle or are itinerant, you won't be able to give potential employers a stable phone number unless you have one you can take with you. I experienced this personally when my family was homeless and living out of cheap motels in the summer of 2020.

Not your wife? Kids? Elderly parents? Sick neighbor? Orphaned child? Disabled vet? Mentally ill homeless woman?

Sweet.
You're certainly the upstanding INDIVIDUAL, the kind that all great religions encourage us to be.

We need to be shouting this from the rooftops: Go to community college! Oh, how much trouble (and money) it would save so many people.

Either you are intentionally misrepresenting what he said or you don't understand. He is saying, If he takes a loan out that he is responsible, not you.

Am I not an upstanding individual? Who am I dragging down?

How am I responsible for my wife? Do you believe women are incapable?

I am responsible for my children. But that decreases over time.

Maybe the lender? Maybe the system that allowed that to continue even after the problems were evident?
I know exactly the point he is making. A narrow focus when placing responsibility.
As I said, a mistake that many make.

lol....Address them all.
Elderly parents? Nope, not responsible.
Sick neighbor? Nope, not responsible.
Orphaned child? Nope, not responsible.
Disabled vet? Nope, not responsible.

You do you.

My belief is that personal responsibility encompasses a broader spectrum.
It's a person's individual responsibility to care for those they love and even those they do not.......call me crazy.

You are not responsible for your wife anymore than she is for you , you are responsible for your kids in teaching them to be self responsible, you are not responsible for your sick neighbors, an orphan, a Vet , anyone that’s mentally I’ll that’s not your child , or any homeless woman or person . You are getting self responsibility and charity mixed up .

Where is it that I can claim I am responsible for myself and then be restricted to helping others?

You don’t get to decide who other’s are responsible for, call me crazy.

Agree to disagree

And you left off elderly parents.
