Not yet. I'd be surprised if Coker doesn't step away from coaching. The person who should be nervous about Butch Davis putting together a staff is The Great O. He made a big production of bringing in the ex-Cane coaches that Coker fired after last season. I'd say those guys would be amneable to following Davis to Chapel Hill.
Join the real world. Shalala will pay lip service to image. She knows results drive the bottom line. The "U" will hire someone to win games, not PR contests.UM would be an extremely tough job to take on right now. The institution clearly wants to overhaul the image of the team. With the problems they have had this year, the university itself is a lot more focused on improving the reputation of the team and the school than it is on performance. Not saying it isn't important to win, but I imagine the administration wants someone who will come in and put a fresh and very affirming face on the program from this point forward. A real change in direction.
Meanwhile, the fans of that team are more focused on getting back to winning. Some probably even wouldn't mind it if the thug swagger were promoted, if it meant good recruiting and winning again. Not all, mind you, but some surely feel this way.
The tension between those two goals will be tough to resolve in the first 3-4 years, which is the rebuilding time UM is looking at here, minimum. Zook came in after Spurrier at Florida and was the transition guy to Meyer. But that was all about winning, not changing the image of the team or the school.
Whoever comes in at UM will have to be very tough and get very lucky and win early, in order to survive the likely criticism of being too vanilla for the UM image. I think the administration will support it, but the fan base won't tolerate it for long.
I think it is a trap job and only someone willing to risk a significant career setback for a few years would take it.
Good points, having said all that do you think SP would be a good fit for Miami?UM would be an extremely tough job to take on right now. True UM wont be down long. Here is a great Question. Which team restores their program first, Fla St. or UM?
Donna Shalala is already wildly unpopular with the alums. A poor hire in this situation will be a one way ticket to the unemployment line.I don't agree at all. I think you will see them really work hard to reinvent themselves. They (administration) looked shell shocked after the FIU game. The team is in disarray since then. They had a player get killed. For the long term success of that program and the image of the university as a whole, they've got to get someone in there who will discipline with an iron fist and exude a strong sense of morality and fair play.

thats one of the best posts i've seen on here, law. all great points. i hope they do as you say, maybe even take notes on your post. lol. they definitely have an image to clean up and i agree that any coach looking at that job will NEED to be there for the long haul---but the fans wont tolerate it. good job by you.k:
Its so easy a caveman can do itWell, the problem is they really don't understand how bad the image is outside of their enclave down there. I cannot imagine being a parent of a high school girl and having her walk in and say she's thinking about going to the University of Miami.
I'd ban it. And if she went anyway, I'd make her take a three week basic training course and get her concealed firearms permit. That plus I'd make her buy $80 million of uninsured motorist protection.
1. Miami has had fewer off the field problems than any major power in the last decade. The only people who buy into the "Thug Image" are idiots who don't bother to deal in actual facts and the douchebag fans of the backwater schools in the Sunshine State. So they are going to force her out and pressure UM to hire someone who will try to resurrect the thug image? I don't think so. If the alumni value winning so much that they are unaware of the reputation of that place anywhere north of the Broward-Palm Beach County line, then they deserve what they get.
I have got to think they are smarter than that and, looking at the long-term, realize they are in for a rocky road for a bit. It is inevitable.
If the "U" wants to be known for a strong and discipliend program and also for decent academics -- instead of viewed as the American version of going to college in Grenada or Port Au Prince -- they are going to have to suck it up and work their way back to the top with coaches who value and promote character as much as a faster 40-yard speed.
Without a doubt, the most laughable post of all time. I'll be willing to wager that the crime rate in Coral Gables is lower than that of Gainesville. Typical backwater thinking. You rubes just stay up north and leave the only real city in Florida to the human beings. Isn't there a klan rally or a Molly Hatchet concert to keep you people busy in Gainesville?Well, the problem is they really don't understand how bad the image is outside of their enclave down there.
