Star Wars: Rogue One

I know on the bright side I just scored tickets to a Thursday night showing so I'll be seeing it two days in a row

My wife got Thursday night premiere tickets for Thursday...then my son's toughest final is Friday...so she declined them.

We will go Saturday. I will stay out of this thread until after I see it :hi:

Bought tickets for Friday night. Looks like I'll be shutting down the interwebz Thursday night for about 24 hours. I'm not going to let this get spoiled.

Spoiler alert: They end up stealing the plans to the Death Star.

HA!

Ruined it for you.

82% so far on Totten Tomatoes.

After the hoopla about the premiere I actually expected higher.

The reviews mean nothing to me. TFA was hyped beyond belief and it was just a remake of ANH (A pretty good one though).

Agreed 100%.

I'll defend George Lucas in one aspect regarding the prequels. For as bad as the prequels are (and yes, they're bad ), at least Lucas made the movies HE wanted to make. He didn't make the prequel films solely based on what he thought fans wanted to see. He had a specific vision and, no matter how popular/unpopular, he carried out that vision. I actually respect that and it makes me respect his films. I think there are a lot of really good ideas in the prequels. I liked the political intrigue, I liked the idea of Palpatine manipulating his way to power, the secret creation of a clone army, etc. It just wasn't properly executed. This is further proven by how enjoyable the Clone Wars animated series was. It was infinitely superior to the films, yet it dealt with the same themes/ideas as the films.

TFA, while entertaining, looks like a film that was put together in a boardroom somewhere by committee. It feels like Disney execs sat down with JJ Abrams and said "Ok, what do Star Wars fans want/expect to see?" Instead of having a vision and telling a specific story, TFA feels like a giant apology to SW nerds for the prequels. I have a feeling that TFA will become one of the most forgettable films in the saga. Part of it's problem is that when it came out, all fans wanted was for it not to be as bad as the prequels, which it wasn't but that is such a low bar to set, the movie really didn't have to do a lot to clear it.

It is the pathetic childish goofiness like JarJar and that stupid escape sequence on that water planet, that I really hated about Ep1 and Ep2. I agree on the adult themed intrigue angles. RoTS is really pretty good. It gets away from the silliness.

TPM was an introduction to Darth Vader as a child.........they did go too overboard with the jar jar character but he is toned down in the next 2. AOTC was a great movie.....go back and watch it.....Palapatine was a perfect evil genius.......the ways he got into power and helping Anakin get close to Padme which he knew would be his downfall later. ROTS is a darn good movie to complete the Journey to the Darkside.

I think this is accurate but I disagree that it was a bad thing. I think it was a genius move. The fans (myself included) just wanted our Star Wars back. We wanted to feel like we were back in the original trilogy again after being taken so far off track with the horrendous prequels. What better way to make that happen than to give them a very similar movie to the one that got them hooked in the first place.

Give them the same, but make it different. Again, I thought it was the perfect move.

The prequels weren't that bad...

Sweet mother of god
Saw a leak with what I think appears to be the last scene in the movie and Vader is wrecking people like no one has ever seen before..like hard core force murder of a lot of people

This is pretty spot on. I've mentioned in various Star Wars threads on here that I actually appreciate the prequels more over the last few years watching them again (and the Clone Wars which I skipped when they aired) with my kids. The story is there. Problem is Lucas needed some people around him to reign him in a bit. And someone to get more out of the actors (I still think he did one take and ran off to the FX room to add a bunch of crap in the background).

As for TFA being forgettable. Maybe for older fans but there is a younger generation out there that love it. I don't know how many Rey costumes I saw this Halloween. The only thing really going against it is the amount of SW films coming that could drown it out.
