Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Episode IX)

The prequels were certainly not better than TLJ. It wasn’t a terrible movie, it had its highs and lows.

Low = the entire Rose/Finn story arc. Leia flying through space. Finn’s line before fighting Phasma “Let’s do it chrome dome!”

High = Pretty much all of the rest of it.

Take out the Rose/Finn disaster and it’s a very solid SW movie.

Every scene in the TLJ is bad. The opening few minutes was stupid and it just continued from there. The forced comedy makes it even worse.

I like some scenes/ characters from each prequel. I can't do that with TLJ.

Thought the same thing about Finn. Would've saved the movie from being a complete disaster imo. The prequels were better than TLJ.

And Rose is one of the reasons why I'm not that hyped for this next movie.

Maybe ROTS and parts of TPM. Jar Jar and Kid Anakin absolutely ruin TPM, and AOTC is just complete dogs***. Even the "good" prequel ROTS has some huge problems; the dialogue Lucas wrote is still awful and parts of the story that were supposed to be iconic are just plain stupid (Anakin turning to the Dark Side, Padme dying, etc.).

TFA and TLJ aren't great by any means but IMO their issues were story choices and lack of direction. I don't have problems with the acting and dialogue....for the most part, with some exceptions. And other than the casino scene in TLJ I liked how the sequels look compared to the prequels. Lucas had complete control of the prequels and to say he botched it would be a massive understatement.

His reliance on green/blue screen is jarring, and Lucas somehow made Samuel L. Jackson, Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, and Liam Neeson all seem like bad actors. Even Hayden Christensen had been nominated for a Golden Globe before he did these movies. Making that many good actors come across so wooden and bad is almost an achievement itself.

In the opening few minutes of TLJ, Poe squares off in his X-Wing with the entire First Order fleet. He stalls them by irritating Hux with some humorous dialogue and then launches a wave of bombers to take down the Dreadnaught. That last bomber standing gives her life to complete the assault, and the Dreadnaught is destroyed.

What’s stupid about that? That’s a scene you would expect from a SW movie. If you’re calling that scene stupid, you’re just choosing not to like the movie for the sake of not liking a movie.

I’m a TLJ defender and I hated the “your mother” joke.... otherwise I thought it was perfectly in line with traditional Star Wars.

I get a chuckle when people complain about bombs dropping in space or the way the cannon fire arced later in the movie. Space physics have always been more about visual appeal than science accuracy in Star Wars. That is just adult fans realizing how silly it has always been.

Another nod I'll give the prequels is the music. The sequel music has been disappointing and I don't remember anything new. The only music I can remember from the sequels has been based on existing music, i.e. when Yoda shows up in TLJ and it's basically his TESB theme. The prequels have Duel of the Fates and Battle of the Heroes, and even Across the Stars from AOTC is pretty good and memorable.

Humorous? I remember hearing groans.
It was a bad movie.

I loved Rogue One. I thought Solo was pretty good, and I got Disney+ mainly for the Mandalorian(which I'm enjoying). I liked The Force Awakens. So, I'm not hating on new Star Wars stuff. A bad movie is a bad movie.

Honestly I've liked pretty much every non-main SW movie/show since Disney has obtained the franchise more than the 2 new main movies. I think Rogue One is possibly the best SW movie since TESB. Solo is way better than the unfair reputation it was given, and Disney should have waited until December to release it. It was too close to TLJ and the mixed reception it got plus SW fatigue set it up to fail. I think if Solo was released in the now normal December timeframe it would have done a lot better. The Mandalorian is good and I would bet money The Obi-Wan series will be good.

I'm wondering if the future of the series will be more series and movies made for Disney +. They definitely are moving away from the side story movies to series, as the Mandalorian and Obi Wan series started out as side movies.

I agree about TFA. I remember telling my wife when I got home from seeing it I didn’t think the music stood out they way a John Williams score should. Although I do think Rey’s theme gets stuck in my head quite often.

I did like TLJ score more. The Ach-too theme and Kylo’s theme stood out to me.

That said, you have to credit Lucas for those first 6. He was heavily involved with the score and how it should reflect the scenes. You can listen to the New Hope sound track and visualize the entire movie without seeing it.

There is a good podcast, The Soundtrack Show, that does an awesome deep dive into the SW scores. It just recently wrapped up ROTJ. It’s definitely worth listening too.

Also on the topic of scores... The Mandalorian music is great! It breaks from the traditional SW fanfares but fits the show perfectly. The soundtrack is on Spotify for anyone interested. My kids play it on the echo nonstop.

Does anyone want to give some predictions on how the Star Wars story will end in Rise of Skywalker? I think it would be cool to come back to the thread weeks after the release and see who was close or even got it right.

Go for it. I honestly think they’re going to blow it.

I'll predict Kylo/Ben will copy the Anakin thing and turn back good, and sacrifice himself to save Rey.

And no, I haven't read any spoilers. I just assume Abrams will copy ROTJ since in TFA he pretty much copied ANH.

I agree with this prediction. Kylo is the only Skywalker left to Rise.

They need to come up with some new villains and hero's I’m getting tired of the Skywalkers and Palpatine it’s been done to death at this point

Until it’s convenient to bring him back again. Like they do with Maul

Edit: Referring to your palpatine comment

Well... then they will just have to kill-kill-kill him again.

Regarding Maul.... when I first heard they were bringing him back for the cartoon show I rolled my eyes. Years later I watched it and thought it was done really well. His role in Rebels was absolutely fantastic.

The first reactions to TLJ were overwhelmingly positive. It had an RT score of 97%.

Yeah, there hasn’t been a good Star Wars movie since the original trilogy outside of Rogue One. I’m trying not to get my hopes up for this one.

However, I’ll be there opening day with my little one. Damn Disney for doing this to me.

The people raving about it don’t strike me as people that actually grew up with the original trilogy.

His story arc is one of the best fleshed out characters in the Star Wars universe.

His creation and where he comes from.

Him being basically cast aside by the emperor.

His brother and their internal power struggle.

And his eventual death and the way Obi held him.

Just an amazing character that was completely owed to the cartoon because Lucas is a f’n hack and had no idea what to do with him.

The writers of the latest cartoons literally destroy the movie writers and directors.

I think Kylo is redeemed. It really seems too predictable. I think Kylo and Rey overcome their differences and pair up against Palpatine, knowing he’s a greater threat to the galaxy.

The final dual between Maul and Kenobi is one of the best in all of Star Wars. 99% of the battle was fought before either one made a move.

I will give Lucas some credit though. He was very involved in Clone Wars and it was him who told Filoni to bring him back. The way I heard it though, George said do it and the writers asked how then he told them to figure it out.

I know this discussion has been had a dozen times but I do think there is a good story in the prequels but Lucas had no one pushing back on him to reign in the bad ideas. That lead to the mess the movies became.

Didn’t know the cartoon aspect.

I agree also. The prequels actually had a very good plot. It was just taken to a huge kid level instead of more mature audience.
