Star Watching (merged)

Dooley also brought in 3 guys that Kiffin couldn't in Hunter, Stone, and Rogers.

Anthony Johnson, Markeith Ambles, Brandon Willis, JC Copeland, Bryce Brown (gone now), AJ Johnson (we may get him but I'm betting on UF now that Kiffin left)....

and basically Dooley's "first signing class" is really Kiffins. The 3 players you mentioned are the best players Dooley has gotten. Kiffin would've matched that or bettered it no doubt. I'd trade Ambles for Rogers if it meant getting all the other players Kiffin had us in on (including Kyle Prater).

Kiffin hardly had any commits at this point..the same people were complaining about kiffin until about week 2 or 3 when he pulled off miller, willis, and cobb onthe same day..also prob the same folks yelling about not having high character players as well

You clearly have no clue what you're talking about.

Who is Cobb?

2-most of the kids tapes i have seen look like very solid players with high character and willing to work their tail off

Work like heck right?

Why'd we fire Fulmer if we just wanted fair players with high character??? We were already getting that!!!

It's about winning... period. That's why Hamilton fired Fulmer. He wasn't winning and his recruiting slipped. The ONLY reason this class is acceptable at ALL at this point is because Dooley took over the program in such bad shape that we have to get guys that will stick with us. I do agree with that.

All I'm saying is... it better pick up. Or Dooley will be back at La Tech.

Side note: UT coaches have recently admitted they "ignore recruiting stars/rankings"....

Yeah well... high school kids don't ignore it. The best players keep going to USC because they know that's where the best players go. They're on FRICKIN PROBATION right now... and are still killing us in recruiting.

That says something.

I don't care what anyone says.... stars and rankings do matter. The second you start acting like a know-it-all coach and pretending you're the only one in the world that knows how to scout and evaluate talent, that's when you get pie in your face.

If you can go through the recruiting rankings by position right now... and with a straight face... tell me that you'd rather have the #20 prospect over the #1 prospect at that position..... according to the rankings.... I'll ban myself from this board. It won't happen. And if it does... you probably need to re-evaluate your own scouting ability.

Doesn't mean anything. There are a lot of all-state players up here in Ohio every year that don't get a single D-1 scholarship offer.

It also doesn't mean anything that he hasn't been offered by other big time programs aside from Oregon and Tennessee. He is currently un-evaluated by rivals, that means know one knows how good he can really be yet. I guess only time will tell.

Or.... if you are looking at it without orange shades on.... it could mean he isn't all that good.

I've watched his tape. Nothing jumps out.

Da gettin paid yo

Or maybe Reggie Cobb secretly tried to sign another scholarship to play for us. Who knows

I was actually HOPING he thought Randall Cobb was committed to Kiffin even though Kiffin wasn't coaching here at the time Cobb was in high school.

Do you think that coaches actually care about what Rivals or Scout thinks about a player? Those services are there to make money off of the general public.
There is a service that a lot of coaches do use though. Can't think of the name off hand. They also use their own sources in an area through coaches that they have relationships with.

I'm not saying they USE Rivals and Scout to recruit with.. no.

But if you were smart, you would pay attention to it. You want your school to finish high on their rankings BECAUSE the high school kids see that. They know your team based on how you recruit and what bowl games you play in. Everyone knows USC recruits crazy. Everyone knows Florida, Texas, Ohio State, and Alabama get the big names. And then they play in the big games.

If I asked you right now, would you rather have the #1 ranked player per Scout/Rivals at every position OR the #19 player at every position... just based on rankings alone... and without even mentioning specific names.... which would you want?

That being said here's the position rankings of our commits so far: 13, 22, 26, 41, 43, 43, NR, NR, NR, NR, NR

NR = not ranked

The top 25 players or so are usually can't miss so I don't really see your point. Would I love to have those guys? Yeah, but it doesn't mean that others can't perform up the that level. Secondly, we have gotten a lot of line guys who typically aren't ranked as high as skill players. Line players are notoriously hard to evaluate and predict the level of success they may or may not have.

Nah, there's no way USC is that dumb. Give it a few more years and yeah, probably....

You know the thing that gets me, is all this talk about how great kitten is, and he hasn't done anything. Fired from one job, and leaves UT in schambles. His old man want last much longer, coach O will jump ship as soon as he can feed his ego in a head coaching job (which he also got fired) and then boy wonder you guys love so much will be left all alone. You can't go through life screwing over people and it not come back around on ya! It is easy right now for USC to get the big boys because of what carroll has done there, but just wait until kitty cat has some losing season's. I will say right here and now, titty cat will be a memory in just a few years. Thank you very much! :salute::pepper:

.

I've read many of your posts... please tell me you are kidding here. You're alot better than that.

There are many reasons greater than that one for why USC gets great recruits.

First and foremost, LA has one of the highest concentrations of 4-5* players in the country and USC has historically gotten their pick of them. They can EASILY get commits from more than 10 players per year and not drive 100 miles round trip.

Second, USC is alone... not just in the Pac 10 but from Kansas west. They have absolutely no real competition when it comes to history, prestige, etc. Two schools would occupy the second tier historically- Washington and UCLA. Cal and Oregon are late comers.

How many storied programs do you have competing for the talent in the eastern half of the country? To make a comparison... you'd have to imagine Bama followed by Georgia Tech and FSU... then no one else being close to that level historically in the whole southeast.

Third, it is LA and southern CA. Some people just love it out there.

Finally, the school, program, and facilities don't hurt their case at all.

Momentum or whatever you want to call it is a very small part of why USC is successful.

FYI the highest rated player position-wise we have right now is Mack Crowder. I'm not 100% sure Mack Crowder would've even been offered at UT if Pete Carroll hadn't left USC.

If someone gave you film on the 19th ranked LB and the 5th ranked LB, would you honestly know the difference? A lot of these services are based on money. Not from you or me, but players who want their name to be known.

Lucky for you there is an "ignore thread" feature.

Nah, I'll use the "ignore list" feature.

Last year I looked forward to your comments, this year not so much. Have fun arguing over what Kiffhole would have done this year. He left, you know?

I'm all with you man. Our program has reached the bottom of the barrel and these guys on here try and spin it into something good. This is UT...not UM(emphis). With Porter at the helm their recruiting is in good hands unlike ours. Before you say anything I am referring to the 2 programs and their different scales. We are in the SEC and formerly one of the top programs in the nation. Memphis...never been anything. We will have better players in the end(hopefully), but for what Memphis is and has to offer, their class will be better comparatively. We have 2 committed guys that have NO STARS. THEY ARE NOT EVEN RANKED...PERIOD. DO NOT TRY AND SPIN THIS. And the rest of them are academic jewels with three stars. If I wanted a team full of effing Spelling Bee winners, and Chess Club members I would follow the M.I.T. football team. We need a miracle filling out the rest of this class to not fall further from grace. For those of you that think things are good:good!: with this current situation...you are delusional. WE SHOULD HAVE ALL 4*'s and a few 5*'s. MAYBE 1 OR 2 3*'s...like Alabama, Florida, and USC.

Massive, massive fail.
