Star Watching (merged)

Okay, maybe double is a push, but we lost a lot of players when Fulmer was replaced, some left, some Kiffin kicked off, then we lost several more when Kiffin jumped ship. The program is definitely worse than he found it and that is due to Kiffins actions. The losses we accumulated from Kiffin were much worse than any gains we had by his recruiting.

That's true. But 2010 was slated to be a bad year no matter what. Things could actually be a lot worse.

I'm comfortable with the 3* players CDD is brining in. Seems like a good group. It would be nice to see a couple big names though. Anyone have predictions on next 4/5* players to commit ?

how do you build a foundation on very little recruited talent but guys who want to play for Tennessee? Heck yeah if I had no offers from the elite schools with no prospect of any then I would tell any coach asking that I am orange blooded to the core. The problem with that continues to be that while we offer projects the big boys are loading up on talent. This group of coaches can't hold Kiffin and companies jock strap in recruiting and offering some of these projects is really stressing the coaching ability of Dooley who is already suspect. This class will not finish in the top 15 and that is a large hill to climb in the SEC. If it doesn't change and Dooley doesn't rethink this crazy three hour rule we are in big trouble mark it down.

Dooley also brought in 3 guys that Kiffin couldn't in Hunter, Stone, and Rogers.

This has already been covered in this thread. Though Dooley deserves credit for Rogers and Hunter, Kiffin also would have landed them. Hunter was an absolute lock because of his relationship with the track coach. Rogers was originally recruited and invited to visit with Nance by Orgeron. Once that seed was planted for the package deal, there was not much doubt where he would end up.

You are correct on Stone, but Chaz Green would have taken his place in the class.

I disagree. I feel that this staff is perfectly capable of recruiting top-tier talent to Tennessee. They showed it in their short time with the last class and continue to show it if only in numbers this season. I think part of the problem is in the plan that is being executed. I do not think we are swinging for the fences such as we did last year. We are settling way too much because of the situation we are in and the sheer numbers we need to have at certain positions.

Will easily change anyone's recruiting strategy.

One month... Two days... and we can at least argue over kicking a 40 yard field goal instead of going for it on 4th and 3.

Care to make that wager?

Ya'll are sleeping on Smith Worley, Randolph, and Posey. I think these guys are 4* at the end of the season and Kerby will be a 4*, and addition of Pat Martin, shoot...

gosh, everybody on my ignore list is on this thread. same old crap. Dooley is horrible, UT is going to the dogs,, blah, blah, blah......One guy is in love with USC...go figure.

But the caliber of players we have recruited up to this point is very disappointing. Some of these guys will undoubtedly end up All-SEC type players, but your odds are much better with better rated talent.

I understand it's a process, but if Kiffin was able to convince high-profile kids to come to UT then we already know it is possible. Unless this recruiting class takes a real turn, it appears that we will be forced to rely on under-vauled players to build our future team upon and please do not delude yourself, that will make it nigh impossible to compete with the Floridas and Alabamas.

This is not an evaluation of our coaching or recruiting abilities, merely a sobering examination of where we are as a program right now.

Agree completely. I know there are diamond-in-the-rough type prospects, but those are exceptions rather than the rule. Highly rated players are generally highly rated for a good reason, and the Floridas and Bamas of the world are excellent talent evaluators. The fact that we are competing with second tier programs for recruits is troubling to me.

none of them will be four-stars. bumped in the rankings, but not in stars.

In regards to the newest commit...Saulsberry made second team all-state in 4-A competition...4-Star Giorgio Newberry made third team behind Saulsberry.

Nice info, man.
Really nice.

I understand your point as a whole, but Kiffin was the second coach in two years. Dooley is the third coach in three. Kiffin had a better roster and more stability to work with, not to mention a living legend as the DC. CDD made some smart hires (I can't wait to see what Wilcox will do), but we lost a lot of players, and therefore a lot of stability.

I think we all are enamored with stars and recruits to some extent. If not why would we care where our class ranks, or check how many stars they have when we first hear about a recruit. It is part of following recruiting. It doesn't make you an unreasonable fan to want highly rated players to commit to your program.

Recruiting seems to me like seeing movies. Sometimes you are willing to take a chance and pay for a movie without hearing what others say about it because it has actors or something in it that you look for in a good movie. So you go even if the reviews aren't spectacular. This is how some recruits are. Ratings aren't high but they have qualities you look for in a quality football player.

Then other times you see a movie just because everyone else is and says it is great so you buy in too because of hype. These are the top rated kids. Inevitably with both types of movies, some are good, some stink, just like the recruits!

Who think that star rankings are not important are absolutely idiotic. First of all i am not one to think that a player is not going to be good cause he is not rated highly. For example I believe Worley is one of the top 2 or 3 qbs in this class and I also believe that are best recruit is the non rated d end that just committed. But you have to realize that alot of top flight recruits look at rankings and see how teams are doing and trust me alot of guys will make a decision based on this team is not signing highly rated guys so why would i want to go there. For example if I am a top RB recruit why would I want to go to a school that has 2 and 3 star linemen all over the roster? Just my take on the star debate.
