Star Watching (merged)

Who think that star rankings are not important are absolutely idiotic. First of all i am not one to think that a player is not going to be good cause he is not rated highly. For example I believe Worley is one of the top 2 or 3 qbs in this class and I also believe that are best recruit is the non rated d end that just committed. But you have to realize that alot of top flight recruits look at rankings and see how teams are doing and trust me alot of guys will make a decision based on this team is not signing highly rated guys so why would i want to go there. For example if I am a top RB recruit why would I want to go to a school that has 2 and 3 star linemen all over the roster? Just my take on the star debate.

You also got to keep in mind the three stars that have committed now are not necessarily gonna be three stars by the time their high school season is over...IMO it is way to early to worry about stars. There was also an article and Terry Joseph was saying he is confident that the three stars signed will be at least four stars at the end of their season. He said to compete we need at least 4 star rated recruits...

Good points.

Saw a little piece on the Owls a couple of nights ago on the new coach and all. I hope ya'll have a good season! I might try to make it out to a couple of games for old time sake even though I will feel old! Good luck and go OWLS!

it is as simple as this question and answer from Hubbs.

Based on what you are hearing, what would you say are the top 2 reasons the Vols are missing out on bigger-name recruits so far? Uncertainty of Staff? Hostessgate? Low potential of winning in short term? Thug image? A strong recruiting class last year?

I think the concern of not winning in the short term and the concern of just not knowing this staff and what they can do are the two biggest factors. We are very much in a show me kind of world. Talk only gets you so far.

this is why things could improve on recruiting front as season goes along. I'm not saying from a win and lose games standpoint as to recruits seeing what this staff can do.

Wilcox is a total unknown in this region. Recruits assessing what the defense looks like this year will be huge. Right now, they have no clue no matter what they are being told.

Agreed. As the season progresses and recruits can actually see a product on the field, we will see who has true interest in UT. All anyone has ATP is the word of the staff. It doesn't have to translate to 8-9 wins to get recruits though. Kids just need to see how our team plays, the schemes we run, how the staff coaches, etc. I can guarantee we will move up on some guys lists when they see us play, but it is just as likely for us to move down as well. Kind of a double-edged sword. IMO, I think recruiting will be helped quite a bit a few games/visits into the season.

" For example if I am a top RB recruit why would I want to go to a school that has 2 and 3 star linemen all over the roster?"

I would want to/go to UT because I am a Vol fan. And that is the only reason I need!

I do not remember his quote saying that -- perhaps I am wrong, but I thought he said that all the 3* recruits we have are going to be 4* when it comes to character.

As I said, I may have read it wrong -- if so, my apologies.

Why do you think this? Just curious.

IMO, the big difference between this years class to date and last is the perception that Kiffin projected on the program. From reading articles on recruits last year the consensus was always that UT was recruiting them the hardest but not many had us as their leader, we simply were a part of their top group (as we are this year). where we really started to build momentum is with official visits where prospects could see the on-field product and game day atmosphere. this is what flipped Miller and got Willis to sign after the UCLA game (which we lost btw). I don't think i'm being unrealistic in being pleased with the way the current staff has gotten prospects on campus and have gotten kids attention, albeit in a different manner.

I would appreciate it if our recruits were decent human beings. I have spent some time on the strip (UT's student hangout for those outside the area), and I appreciate the guys that have been raised right. Granted, everyone ( or most) have made drunken mistakes, it is refreshing to meet an athelete that is not an A-hole, or has respect for others. I am not knocking UT. I know this happens everywhere. Many of these atheletes grow up in the projects with parent(s) that only care about their ability to get rich quick, and provide them with the house that someone that has never worked a job to support their kids desereves. Thanks for the welfare cheese ma! Just saying, I am a UT grad and want to be proud. I love football. I played 10 years, but I am more proud of my state and university. GO VOLS!

Kid throws another 40 TD passes this year, and they won't be able to look over the previous 92 TD passes from his sophomore and junior seasons combined.

And let's not forget that he was one of the previous staff's top targets for this class. He has a great offer list and it is obvious that he is underrated.

OH, Boy! Another star post! Just what we need! Could you have not just put your comment in the other 10 post about star's?

Stars only matter when you're getting players with 4 or more or them..... (if you've gotten this far, read the whole post)

As soon as we get only 3 stars, people everywhere are coming out of the woodworks saying stars don't matter.

I'm NOT arguing that they do or don't, i'm just saying be real. We want players with 4 or 5 stars, and to say otherwise is just spinning the situation. Imagine if Alabama or Florida had the same recruiting class, most of you saying stars don't matter would be looking at their class like it was a joke. Just be real and hope these guys work out for us.

IMO, 2 or 3 of these guys with turn 4* and we'll sign 4-5 four start and maybe a 5* or two and end up with a top 15 class. Just hang in there....

Well it's not a joke for Tennessee because unlike Fla or bama, we haven't won a National Championship in 12 yrs.

It's been a long time since we even won the conference or the East for that matter. When you don't finish first, you dont get the highest recruited players. That's the way it works.

Plus, when your school is barely finishing above .500 than it doesn't look to promising to recruits that the future is good. And when you switch coaches three times in three years, that brings the same kind of attention.

We have to be thankful for the kids that we are getting. I will start expecting 5 star recruits when our school has 5 star results. You can't expect more from our school then what ppl think it's worth.

This might sound crazy but

You have to do more with less before you can get more...

Or at least show enough stability in the program to give kids hope.

Go Vols!

ESPN's recruiting rankings completely suck honestly

You should be impressed with at least that one ranking... they agree with Kiffin about Worley.

If ESPN is bad, Scout has always been sporadic, and Rivals has lost/cut staff that hurt their product... then rankings mean even less this year than normal, right?

Somewhere, Kenny O'Neil lines up in the wrong spot and runs the wrong route every time someone mentions star ratings

When will performance from this season become a factor? We are an unknown to many but we win with little and the resources we have, 2 stars or 5 stars will want to come. 3 stars and 2 stars have a more success rate than 5 stars by the look of things. Per Rivals.com: Ryan Karl, Inky Johnson, , Montori Hughes. Hefney, "one punch" Tony Mcdaniel, B. Colquitt, Ellix Wilson, Missouri Sean Weatherspoon. Anthony Parker, Arian Foster, Ramon Foster, Vlad Richard, Dan Williams, Luke Stocker, Gerald Williams, Denaurius Moore, THE ROD WILKS from UT. Buckeyes James Laurenitis (sp?), Malcolm Jenkins, UNC Q. Sturdivant, 5 stars does not guarantee an automatic Eric Berry i.e. Chris Donald. Marvin Mitchell was a 3 star and he is still in the NFL. We have to know stars don't mean jack and sometimes it does. LB Michael Taylor was a scrub but we took him and he turned out to be a star and jetted for gators. Only TIME not STARS TELL THE TAPE.

So to win the SEC your going to need talent. Yes, you have to get a couple of some 3*'s, but a class full of them won't allow us to compete.

Well to me it looks like you need a fair balance of three and 4/5 star talent. which is exactly what I think that Dooley's class will look like in the end...so I am still on the side of not worrying!
