Texas A&M/SEC megamerge thread extravaganza

Not to mention they would lose a home game OOC.

How will I live without an annual game against Wyoming, UT-Martin, etc? I might as well throw myself from the top of Neyland Stadium if this is true. Noooooooo!

(It also helps make it possible for Florida to never play in any cool/cold weather against a Division I opponent, but that's a different topic.)

fyp.

They play Vanderbilt in Nov every other year in Nashville.

A&M is joining (or would join) too late to play in the SEC in 2012, right?

They seem to think 2012 is the year they will begin play, so I don't know.

On another note, Texass fans have the delusion that Notre Dame is chomping at the bit to join the Big XII.

Isn't it?

I have seen multiple saying that they're cool with A&M leaving, because they'll just rebuild the league with at minimum BYU and Notre Dame.

Texas fans are just delusional. No way would ND give up all their money to join a weak BCS conference that is virtually a sinking ship. SMU or Houston will probably be their likely options.

The delusion of the University of Texas hacks never ceases to amaze me. Check this jewel, which appeared in today's Houston Chronicle.

A&M move flies in face of reason - Houston Chronicle

Takes a swipe at the SEC in the process of ripping the Aggies for wanting to leave the Big 12.

I'm not one who takes out revenge on others...and I don't expect A&M's affiliation with the SEC to be 13 (or 14) members holding hands and singing Kumbaya, but there's a side of me that really wants UT (as in the University of Texas), to roll over and die.

Oh how I wish Tennessee would play Texas.

I didn't used to have any issue with Texas, despite their best efforts to act like our stepchildren by ripping off nearly everything that Tennessee does.

Now that I've seen just how stupid and clueless and arrogant the vast majority of their fans are, I wish we got a shot at them every few years.

The thing is, ND wouldn't be giving up money and they wouldn't be 'joining' a conference.

My understanding is that any current talks between Texas and Notre Dame are to form a new conference.

Notre Dame values its independence primarily because it allows them to play a 'national schedule,' which is important to them because they view themselves as the nation's flagship catholic school. Joining the Big 10 isn't repulsive to them because they would be "losing their independence" but rather because they would be regionalizing 75% of their schedule.

The writing is on the wall and ND knows it. Four 16-team conferences are on the horizon. Therefore, ND is now considering whether to take a proactive stance to ensure their relevance in the future of college football and retain their national schedule at the same time.

Instead of ND simply joining a 9, 10, or 11 team Big 12, the idea is that ND and Texas would take 8 or 9 of the existing Big 12 members (after aTm leaves) along with BYU, and some ACC/Big East schools to form a 16-team conference that has a national footprint.

Who knows if they can pull it off or not, and I'm not even saying that ND has bought into it yet , but the ideas exchanged between ND and Texas are more along the lines of forming something new than plugging holes in the Big 12.

Ive read about that too Miz. I'm sure Texas has initiated talks but I'm wondering if ND is taking the bait.

I'd like to see where you guys are getting this from; not that I think either of you would make this up...but this sounds like something really out of left field

Especially since, if notre dame were to join the 9 big 12 teams or whatever to form a super conference, those numbers sound like they'd have to give up much of those yearly rivalries they've always played since like forever- Michigan, USC, BC, Navy, michigan St, purdue, Pitt - and for them, a school that really prides itself on "historic" as far as its football program goes, just giving up all those rivalries with a wave of a hand-like disregard like that just seems...a bit out of character for them

...of course, I could totally though see this coming from something like Texas went to talk to notre dame about how they managed their independent status (& then the Texas fans turning it into a "fine go ahead and leave for the crummy SEC! We'll form a bigger and better conference with notre dame! and byu! and 16 teams! and cross-national coverage! (with blackjack and hookers! you know what, forget the conference!))

AP is reporting Texas A&M is expected to declare that they are leaving the Big 12 by the end of [next] week

Whether or not that's just a speculative date on their part, who knows

I've only read about this on message boards so it might as well be made up....

But, if they are starting from square 1 in forming a conference, there are a lot more options available to placate ND's need to play 4 or 5 non-conference games every year than there would be if ND was simply inserted into an existing Big 10...

I will say though that some pretty creative things will need to occur in order for ND to be able to retain all their rivalries... I think ND will have to prioritize among those schools without a doubt - but that will have to occur regardless of which "superconference" they would join or partnership with.

Or they just decide to stay independent, keep their quite large unsharded revenue to themselves, and continue to play under their "8th ranking or higher results in an automatic BCS bowl bid, and 9 wins plus a 12 ranking at least qualifies them to be given a BCS bid"

Unless the NCAA creates some drastically radical change in the way the overall system works, there's going to be no real reason for them to make such a change (as much as every conference really would like to add as team with not just heavy revenue draw in Chicago and Indianapolis, but theyre absolutely huge in NYC and to some degree nationwide)

Texas ding-dongs also think Arkansas is going to swoop out of the SEC and save their conference.

Hmmm, although unlikely, would this be such a bad thing? If nothing else, it would end all the threads about how to divide up the conference.

Alrighty then...............So...If Mizzou comes with TAMU ya think maybe just maybe the SEC could convince Oklahoma and Oklahoma St to join as well?.....Then let the bodies hit the floor! :-D

In the past, the San Antonio Express-News has been one of the few 'balanced' papers in Texas concerning news about A&M. Thanks for posting that article Gordonr24.

How are they not? Nothing points out more obviously that they are a second rate program than their TV contract situation. They aren't even in the SEC's geographical footprint, and bring very little more than a headache to the conference. They want all the good that comes with being in the SEC but have very little to offer in return.

All they want is a fair playing field. Whats wrong with that?
