Texas A&M/SEC megamerge thread extravaganza

Yea, was just pointing out every time it has been tried... it has sucked.

Not sure why the poster is so sure that it will "easily work?"

Not sure why you're so sure my last post wasn't just a joke

I wouldn't be surprised if the conference was actually still standing in the future, as pretty much a hollow shell of its former self (after Texas decided to go independent and the other majors bolted to PAC/big10/SEC)

I'm of the belief that Baylor and Iowa State are in deep trouble. The seven remaining after A&M leaves will have other opportunities...but I can't see any of the major conferences taking Baylor or Iowa State. I think Baylor knows it too as their president (Kenneth Starr) has been trying to keep A&M locked to the Big 12.

I think Kansas State might be in a tough spot as well. They are definitely second banana in that state, and Manhattan isn't exactly a must-see destination.

According to Dennis Dodd the following are all being considered for the 14th spot:

Maryland
North Carolina
Virginia Tech
Mizzou

I would hesitate to assume the others that have been mentioned are completely eliminated, however, that select group is logical, sans Maryland.

Maryland makes some sense as gets the SEC into the northern VA / DC market.

UNC will never leave the ACC.

Like Kansas is in too much better of a position?

How reliable is Dennis? I can't imagine too much more than various speculations being out there right now.

UNC will never leave the ACC to join the SEC. Of that list, Virginia Tech looks the most logical to me. Maryland and Missouri would add nothing to the SEC.

Mehhhh, its all speculative. I'm really not sold on Mizzou coming along anymore, and as I've stated prior, I would not be shocked if NCState is getting some serious consideration. Under the radar obviously.

I'm sure NC State is being considered but the tobacco 4 (Wake, UNC, Duke, and NC State) are very highly connected. I'd doubt the SEC could get one of those. I'd love to get UNC but they would never get separated from Duke.

Out of that four, its pretty clear who little brother is.

Wake?

Seriously though, NC St doesn't have anywhere near the same kind of antagonistic relationship with the other NC schools that you (ATM) and Texas seem to have with each other.

I don't see these trans-continental superconferences working out for one reason: Title IX. Since football is out there, there have to be a number of other non-revenue generating sports that schools must participate in. If it were just football, then yes, two or three dozen schools in the US could afford to travel anywhere for a game five or six times a year. But when you factor in the cost of flying the womens voleyball team thousands of miles, then things get tough. The WAC ran into this when they were at 16 teams.

Aggie Women's soccer just played in a tournament in Knoxville over the weekend. Sooooooooooo........yeah.........ummmmmm............

edit to add the following:

National Champion Men's and Women's track team to be at Notre Dame, Wisconsin, and South Carolina in the upcoming months.

Volleyball in Portland, Butler, Xavier, Toledo, and Washington State.

I can continue.

I'm not sure traveling the distance to anything along the lines of ATM or Missouri would be that much more of an issue....especially since east teams would already have been travelling to the states of Louisiana and Arkansas

At least they have the bulk of the fans in the state. Not to mention solid basketball. K State desperately needs the Big XII to hang together.

No one's going to take anyone for basketball in these moves though. It just doesn't generate that much revenue

Remember last summer's big "almost all the big 12 to the PAC 10 plan?" they weren't part of it....in fact no one was even offering (or even realistically projecting) them anything or anywhere

....don't get me wrong, they will end up somewhere...but it's not going to be as great as some like to think they will

It would be nothing for a North Carolina, or Virginia school to travel to anywhere in the SEC. As for us, I've provided you enough examples that we're already making road trips of that same length frequently throughout the year in several "non revenue drawing" sports.

It's really not that hard once you're as big as we are.

Money and travel difficulty are not and will never be an issue for any of the teams the SEC could potentially add.
